Woman's security camera catches panty package thief in the act
»Play Video
PORTLAND, Ore. - A Southeast Portland woman is hoping a home video security system that captured a man stealing a package from her front door helps police capture a suspect.
Meanwhile, Jen Hill is getting a bit of a laugh over the situation, since the suspect, clearly a man, got away with something he probably won't have much use for: her underwear.
"I actually get email alerts whenever there's a motion, so that's what I got," Hill said. The security camera system alerted her smartphone when it activated last Tuesday. She was then able to watch video from the camera on her phone as it was being recorded.
She said video she usually sees from the system - usually of cats, birds and other animals - is a lot less exciting than the recent theft caught by on video.
"He's a panty thief. That's what he is," Hill said with a chuckle. She said she filed a police report.
The suspect appears to be an adult male wearing a backpack and what looks like pink gloves. He swoops in quickly, leans over her small porch and grabs the package of panties before walking away.
Given the opportunity, Hill said she wants to tell the thief to "give me back my panties!"
"There's a lot of petty crime around here," Hill said. "I think he was hoping there was something better than ladies underwear in there."
Police have not said if an investigation is in progress.
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but what kind of woman tells the world her panties are delivered by UPS.. She seems nasty to me !
@dougrpdx In what kind of a world is something as harmless and mundane like underwear supposed to be kept a secret?Â
@dougrpdx Meh. A lot of people buy their stuff online now.  It's convenient and less expensive. Â
Must be a slow news day. No wonder people have such a sckewed view of the world. Not all crimes are reported on the evening news, only those that are scintillating. TV news is just another glorified reality show. Facts are crime rates are down and have been for some time, and it's not because more people are in jail. Actually, it has a tie to the legalization of abortion. Don't believe me? Look it up!
I've got my attack gopher trained to git folks stealing delivered things from my door. Now if he could also nip the deer eating my flowers in the yard, I'd be happy and buy him some more Purina Gopher Chow!
I hope he enjoys them and that they fit! LOL
Pink gloves, lavender jacket, panties...bald head, that must mean a wig is next.
I'm voting for platinum blonde.
@Mikey Next time it's going to be a blonde man robbing people with stilettos.Â
The problem is not necessarily with UPS or FedEx, although I've seen plenty of abuse by their drivers. In today's day and age, with online retailers trying to offer lower prices, their shipping costs are so low because they pay bare bones to FedEx and UPS, so in turn they ship packages normal 3-5 day ground without any type of signature required. You can always get signature required, but you have to pay more. Not to mention when a company signs a contract with UPS or FedEx, those carriers only pay a small fraction if THEIR driver loses a package, so yes retailers do pass the cost on - problem comes down to be being with the retailer, not the actual carrier
Â
but I think she's nuts for saying 'give me my panties back' - do you REALLY want them back after a pervert got ahold of them? God knows what they did with them
@Keith ...danced around in them, Gangnam style...with one on his head
I hate thieves. They are a low form of life with no character or integrity. I hope they catch this idiot and allow him to explain to his buddies in jail why he's there.
@DeaconBugg A lot of taxes is practically theft. I don't see you revolting any time soon.Â
The owner of the panties might check craigslist

@stormy did you see the goosebumps on her skin? Where was she standing for photo? Outside on porch??
@stormy Can't understand why someone would want to wear someone else's used underwear. That ranks right up there with recycled toilet paper. Now THAT'S gross! :-P
@stormy I don't think these are the same size.....
 @stormyÂ
Business major no doubt.
"Thank you" JohnQ.Public for good advice!
Isn't Sung Koo Kim on parole?
Wrong color!
Leaving packages on a recipients doorstep in an age with so many obama voters around, is a bad idea.
Lots of good jokes here!
Â
But this raises an issue that has long bothered me and that's the delivery services leaving packages on the porch. The cost of all that stolen merchandise (which gets refunded to the customer) is being passed on to everyone. And how many people 'steal' their own stuff I wonder, just to get a freebie?
@ormom I am sure UPS and FedEx would catch on if the same person kept reporting stolen packages and put their address on a requires signature list.
 @FreedomRocksÂ
I have neighbors that seem to buy just about everything online. They get a delivery almost everyday and sometimes have 3-4 packages on their doorstep when they get home at night. With that kind of volume, which I'm sure is not that uncommon, I think a person could get away with pulling off the 'theft' of some pretty expensive items now and then.
@FreedomRocks  @ormom They (crooks) have been doing just that and it's been in the news.
Actually some of the lowlife thieves do follow the trucks.
It is up to each person to require signature or not. Some people if they will not be home, might use another address to have the packages dropped.
I have mine shipped to work, and since I sign for all the shipping anyway...I am right there
Â
@FreedomRocks  @ormom Same here. I think Amazon needs to sell a box that will accept packages but not give them up without a key or combination. Petty theft is becoming all too common to let anything of any value be left on the porch.
@ormom Same here with Amazon free shipping why waste gas driving to the store. Between me and my neighbors the UPS or FedEx guy leaves something on the porch of a house on our street daily.
Â
I know I often have items that might be worth stealing and only rarely is a signature required like for a pricy item like a cell phone, PC, etc.
Â
I am always amazed the crooks are not just following around the trucks gathering the packages back up as they drop them off...
Hopefully he will return them before he wears them and not after.
Meanwhile, Jen Hill is getting a bit of a laugh over the situation, since the suspect, clearly a man, got away with something he probably won't have much use for: her underwear.
Â
How does she know that he won't have much use? Â This was in Portland right?
That's an "adult black male" in the pic??
That camera has some serious problems with it's color setting.
@Mipsfer Better take off your sunglasses, sparky. Oh, and take a closer, perhaps longer, look at the first slide.
I have had stuff from UPS taken from my front porch, and so has the people across the street. I also have been broken into four times in five years and I live in the burbs in a fairly nice middle class area. I work two jobs to make ends meet. I had to some how come up with extra money to protect myself as much as possible to pay for a security system with videos! And "YES" I would shoot someone if they broke into my home while I was there and I would do it without batting an eye!!!! There are low life scum on every corner in every town! Give another ten years and and this will seem like happy times! We live in a ME world!! Hurting others means nothing anymore to so many. I pray to "GOD" each day for our future! And I pray for the thief's who live by hurting others!
@BlessedLife "...and I live in the burbs in a fairly nice middle class area...." Well OF COURSE you are going to be targeted in that area! It's obvious that your neighborhood has stuff worth stealing, unlike other areas. You have to look at what is going on with your home that makes it appear juicy 4 times in 5 years to thieves. Get a few large dog bowls, and dog things and make it *look* like you have a big dog, and get involved with your local neighborhood watch group.
@BlessedLife It doesn't matter where you live, crime happens. Listen to a police scanner for a week and you'll see what I mean. I get a real kick out of the LO crowd, they think that they are immune for some reason.
Â
Your post wasn't clear whether you had a security system but definitely buy one as well as a UPS to keep it on in case of a power outage. Also get a system that will upload your videos to some kind of offline storage (outside server) in case thieves make off with the DVR.
@JohnQ.Public  @BlessedLife Or notify UPS and FedEx not to leave packages if no one is home.
@BlessedLife "I live in the burbs in a fairly nice middle class area".
Appearances are deceiving.
I'm most definitely impressed by Jen's techno-geek accessories!
Â
I've been in the market for the past few months looking at IP web cameras. My only concern is that one of the popular ones out there (Dropcam) seems to NOT record. You have to record through your PC. Problem is: thief takes your PC, you're screwed?
Â
How do others have theirs set up? Jen, are you paying attention? What do you use for recording? There was one camera I looked at that had a micro-SD slot so you could put in a 32 GB card and it'll record up to a month on that.
@GeauxOSU Use the cloud for storeage of such important data. Replace 'puter. Submit recording as evidence. Not screwed.
You gotta admit, this chick is pretty nerdy! I wonder if she uses work time to use her iphone or not! Some people use their iphone throughout the day (primarily facebook) and think its no big deal...
Some people don't use a phone and still can't get the job done, or done to satisfaction.
Â
Did you have a point?
My point is that some people use their devices to the point of having a detriment in the work place. I know of people who constantly use these devices and waste time while I sit here and don't use any of that crap. Devices like these turn you into zombies and I do not appreciate where our culture and society is going...
 @portlandborn83Â
Â
My kind of nerdy chick. I do the same thing.
Â
I have numerous cameras in and around my home. All the internal cameras are only accessible from within the network; the external ones are connected to my email server and send out an alert when the motion sensor is triggered. Like her most of my triggers are stray dogs, a few overly fed neighborhood cats and the occasional kid running through the yard.
Â
If you think it's too nerdy bear in mind I have had 4 car break-ins, a stolen motorcycle, stolen storm windows (yeah they stole my STORM WINDOW), 3 stolen ladders, and a metal carport (just the metal parts). When I had a motion light, they put a stocking hat on it to keep it from turning on and it still did and set fire to my house.
Â
Â
Â
@Repoman  @portlandborn83 where the hell do you live for people to do all that AND set fire to your house??? OMG
Absolutely hilarious!Â
 @whirledworld  @portlandborn83Â
Â
Se Portland Lents area. But don't tell anyone I am trying to sell my house :)
Â
The funniest thing ever stolen was during a snatch when someone opened up my office window and yanked a plastic bag on my desk out and ran off with it.
Â
It set off my house alarm (we have it on all the time) and so we ran to find out what happened.
Â
The bag was filled with dog poop from a trip to the park and was left out by my wife (on MY part of the desk!).
Â
I hope the thief liked what they got!
Â
Â
@Repoman Interesting story, you definitely need your security system! Do you live in NE or N ptown?Â
So is there some sort of underwear exchange program I'm not aware of? Is it like Netflix for panties? (Pantyflix seems a bit inappropriate) If so I'd like some more information, although I'm a bit hesitant to think about who may have worn them the previous week.

@Dr. Rawdog And Victoria's Secret. There also is Pajamagram (no affiliation).

@Dr. Rawdog Good idea......you've convinced me.
 @Dr. Rawdog HA!
