Priest accused of sex abuse gets church loan for lawyer

WOODBURN, Ore. - The Woodburn priest accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy now has a prominent lawyer in his corner.
Angel Perez has hired attorney Marc Blackman and the Archdiocese of Portland has made him an open-ended loan to pay for the legal fees according to The Oregonian.
Perez was arrested earlier this week after a 12-year-old boy told police that Perez had fondled him.
According to the paper, the archdiocese has not had a priest arrested on sex abuse charges since the early 1980s, when another reverend was arrested and convicted.
A spokesman for the archdiocese wasn't able to tell the Oregonian if legal funds or loans had been provided in that case.
Blackman has handled some very high profile cases in the past, including defending Dr. Jayant Patel against charges in a medical deaths case and anesthesiologist David Burleson, who was sentenced in December 2008 to prison for sexually molesting a woman while she was sedated.
Blackman also defended Andrew Wiederhorn, who went to prison in 2004 for his role in the Capital Consultants ‘Fog Cutter’ scandal.
While I respect the church, it should not stand behind guys like this! That is condoning his actions.
Respect for anything has to be Earned, if not, then its not Respect. Fear is most often confused with Respect. Don't fear retribution, you may Love members of your church but you cannot Truely Respect an Organization that Protects these Sexual Preditors.

Well.....just another reason why folks should re-evaluate their monetary contributions and support of this beleagured church. Nothing like having your hard earned $$$ go to pay off lawyers to represent child molesters. What's wrong with having this creep do like everyone else without funds has to do....be represented by a court appointed Public Defender? Sick and very very very sad indeed.

 @FLATFOOT2810 It's obvious you don't know what you're talking about. While I would never condone the behavior of the priests or the Church's handling of the abuse, I know for a fact that there are more good priests than bad, by a large margin. People like you, just because you always believe the lame stream media, make stupid assumptions. It's been proven that less than 5% of the priest population are child molesters. However, because of the media, it gets blown out of proportion because they only report on the negative. They ignore the positives that the majority of priests provide. You, like millions of others in the world, think that just because their are a few bad apples, they must all be bad. Your ignorance is speaking loud and clear.

CLOSE THE SCHOOLS. Over 25 cases in Oregon for the School Year 2011-2012.  Since 1980 this is the first Priest Arrested in Oregon. In the same time over 400 Teachers have been guilty of Sexual Abuse.

Oh, so now the Catholic Church can pay for defense lawyers for their priests but can't pay the amounts they were ordered to pay victims of past priets? Just doesn't seem right. How do they expect to get that loan back anyhow? Like I said, just doesn't seem right.

Yep, the Catholic church is still making sure its homosexual pedophile priests are defended and supported. How very sad the Catholic church provides a sanctuary for all these pedophiles and still does not accept the fact that its own culture perpetuates these vile crimes on children. This will only change when those who believe in the myths and fantasies of religion stop filling the financial coffers of churches.Â

The Archdiocese of Portland is not interested in determining the truth about what this priest did, but only in getting him off without having to pay damages. They are only interested in playing politics. What does that say about the Catholic Church today??? How can any Catholic be proud of the Church???

Since he was charged with an offense on hearsay (allegation w/o evidence), it is not at all unreasonable for his employer (the church) to assist in defending him (and since the church will undoubtedly be the ones paying damages if a conviction occurs). He needs his day in court, represented by a competent attorney.

Try doing a little Church History for a year or two and you will see the Mother of the so called Christian Religion started around the 3rd century and anything but Christ like....They were the Judge and Executioner all thru the Inqusition and the Dark ages...is the shoe on the other foot now ?
Organized religion in itself is evil. Churches are not to prosper because of the word of the Lord. So sick.
