MILWAUKIE, Ore. - A wounded soldier who returned home after two years recovering from severe injuries reached his goal of raising $20,000 to pay for a special truck designed for his wheelchair.
Alex Hussey returned home to Oregon this week after he lost both legs in Afghanistan in 2012 when a IED exploded below him.
Family and friends planned a tribute at a VFW hall and raised $9,000 on Saturday, in addition to $11,000 raised earlier.
The money will pay off Hussey's truck, which is designed to carry his wheelchair.
Hussey reached the $20,000 goal on Saturday afternoon, said Ken Buckles, who organized the tribute.
Police escorted Hussey into the VFW hall's backyard, where Milwaukie High School's Class of 1972 was holding its reunion and asked to incorporate a special tribute for Hussey during the concert.
