Sen. Wyden touring Hanford despite radioactive tank leak
RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) - As the new chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Sen. Ron Wyden was scheduled to tour the Hanford nuclear reservation.
But, Tuesday's tour by the Oregon Democrat took on added weight following Friday's announcement that a radioactive waste tank is leaking.
There's added pressure to complete a waste treatment plant at Hanford and secure waste in underground storage tanks to prevent radioactivity from reaching the Columbia River.

Hanford and plant genetic engineering ought to go together. Quick growing precooked vegetables , animals like rabbits the size of the ones in the movie "the night of the lepus". We could solve the worlds food shortage except the fact the food we send does not get to the hungry
So he makes a short visit and the media makes somewhat of a big deal out of it. Â The people in the Richland area have been living with it for years. Â The government has been spending zillions of dollars trying out different methods of containing or cleaning up the radioactive waste even after experts told them their ideas wouldn't work. Â But, since the taxpayers and China have bottomless wallets, they continue to keep wasting zillions without any significant results. Â A feel good gesture by this politician will only result in more wasted money.
He had a choice, he could either turn green or yellow.
Our Senator from New York is out for a for a little face .........
Too bad he doesn't feel that Oregon is good enough to raise his family in........
Why don't you use Senator Wyden to plug the leak? About the only good thing a politician is good for....
or how about the Nevada Test Center. The worlds largest surface testing area of nuclear weapons just a few hundred miles away, that's worse than Hanford, oh well.
@Bio Sphere You SAW that old black and white movie about the giant tarantula. Is THAT what you want?!
@Playanekes @Bio Sphere If they take my AR-15 away I'm going to want it back if giant mutant tarantulas start showing up!
@Playanekes @Bio Sphere I, for one, do NOT want any giant tarantulas, and if they show up I'm counting on you to kill them.  I'll be happy to supervise.
@Bio Sphere Well maybe or maybe not if Hanford leaks into the Columbia it would be devastating for our food supply as it made its way out to the Oregon coast.
Dont even get me started about the federal dump hidden outside of Lakeview. America's capatalism is no different than worldly narcissism.
@Bio Sphere Do you happen to have a distance and bearing from Lakeview for that (uh...general direction?)
@Playanekes @Bio Sphere Sure, I have the location, it isn't a secret anymore, but the toxins still buried there, don't care about secrets, their life-span continues.
@Bio Sphere Actually all this stuff is from and earlier time so not sure your statement is true today. However we just encouraged other third world countries to do our polluting for us shifting the problem to them other then air pollution which goes everywhere.
We find no excuse for the transgressions of mismanaged Hanford reservation, that has sucked billions of dollars to avoid this, finally a reformer with a record of accomplishment at the helm, Go Ron go!
I'm sure he'll give a "glowing" account when he gets out of there!
@jpk Clever
When I visited hanford, they were puttin tons and tons of low level radioactive soil in a giant pit the size of a few football fields in length, and this must've been the 5th pit or so. There is so much crap there that we are doomed sometime in the future!
Low Level radioactive waste that is put into pits at Hanford has to be solid waste and not liquid. As long as you don't dig it up and hug it, it poses no problems.
@Mugwamp51Â Ya the low level stuff is nothing compared to what the high level stuff is like; the high level stuff is so numerous that they haven't found all of it yet!
@portlandborn83 I just had to point out that... "we are doomed sometime in the future" no matter what.
@JTesla Yep was just reading today that the latest example Higgs boson particle is turning out to be a reality and means that the universe is fundamentally very unstable. They're predicting a rather sudden demise of the entire universe sometime in the next billion years if their calculations are correct.
@JTesla Yeah, so lets create more of it artificially, yay, cookies and ice cream. We have ipods and Tesla's great "hidden" or "classified" items and we can't even reliably harvest the sun. That thing hanging up there that will burn for another 40 billion years or so. Isn't it ironic how technology is turning into the bain of human existence. Go ducks.
@JTesla your welcome, I wanted to personally chide Duck fans, cookies and ice cream and people who argue for Nuclear Power with Tesla in their name, irony of ironies, me thinks.
@JTesla You're just a big fibber as far as 'most random string of nonsense', cuz I know you "visit" here occasionally with lee.  =)
@Bio Sphere Thanks for the laugh. That has to be the most random string of nonsense that anyone has said to me in a reply.
He blusters about gas prices but does nothing else. So, there are two possibilities; he will bluster about the Hanford leaks but do nothing, or this is a move to distract us from his lack of action as gas prices climb rapidly once again.
@Nobody Actually, America spent nearly a hundred billion dollars on the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste repository, which is state-of-the-art and complete, but, it was Ron Wyden's party who promised to shut it down once all that money was spent.
I wonder if the Senator takes sugar with his isotopes.
@Playanekes @Nobody Yup. Senator Reid (who just happens to be from Nevada) led the charge. Apparently NIMBY is a contraction for not in Nevada. Ignore the fact that the federal government owns the vast majority of the land and Las Vegas would still be a desert if it weren't for the federal dam and powerhouse.
Maybe we can send in Obama and see what he thinks...Minus all the PPE..
@lee986321Â Kinda like when you see video of a politician touring a factory and they're the only one without a hardhat and safety glasses. Gotta look good for the cameras!
