Self-named 'toughest sheriff in America' falls victim to crime

PHOENIX (AP) - The self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff in America" has apparently been the victim of credit card fraud.
Maricopa County authorities in Phoenix say Sheriff Joe Arpaio's credit card information was stolen and used to make a $291 transaction at a Chicago grocery store last weekend.
Arpaio says he hasn't been to Chicago since 1957 and that Discover Card representatives alerted him to possible fraudulent activity.
It's unclear how the thief or thieves obtained the card number.
Arpaio says his card has been canceled to prevent any further fraudulent use as authorities try to figure out what happened.

$290.00 in a grocery store I hope they ate well that would have paid for about 750 inmates for about 3 days at his prison.
Catch 'em, Joe! Force-feed 'em Green Bologna! Make 'em wear pink tutus!
Poor Sheriff Joe. The last time he was a victim of a crime it was because some guys from Nigeria turned out not to be so honest... Joe was just trying to help.
Discover card? Who the hell takes the Discover card?

Â
Considering with Discover and AMEX you cannot be charged a service fee for their use, more and more people as they move away from VC/MC.
Â
I guess where there's a will, there's a way!
@jpk I always heard it as: "Where there's a will, there's a way to break it."
I thought that only applied in probate court if you challenge the deceased's will
Wait, my card number was stolen when I used it online. Where is the story about that? And yes, the issuer caught it right away. Not that they were looking out for me, they are looking out for themselves, since you can not be held liable for those charges, they make sure they don't happen.
@Owt_Raged Well, that was stupid, Owt!
You NEVER use your OWN credit card online!
You use someone else's!
I bet he was victim to a hand swipe device.
Â
A waiter, gas attendant, or other service person was handed his card to pay a bill. On the way or from the proper pay device the thief swiped the card and got the code off the back.
Â
They then went to any number of pirate sites and sold the card off for a few bucks in a lot of cards they stole over some period of time.
Â
The second thief then used that number to make a fake card that can be swiped at a terminal and made a purchase with it (usually with help from the employee as the card is usually blank other than now coded stripe).
Â
Â
@Repoman Gee...I wonder how many of the victims get their hands back? :-P
 @MikeyÂ
Eventually everyone gets their hand back, but you first must pay a ransom.
Â
Usually the other hand.

Unfortunately, law enforcement in Chicago is notoriously incompetent and the people are incapable of defending themselves, so, it doesn't matter how tough on crime other communities a as long as there are gun-free human swamps like Chicago where committing crime is trivially easy.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio for President.................
 @STEELHEAD ...of Siberia!
Sheriff Joe is the BEST Sheriff in the United States of America.
@FreerideNOT Didn't he star in "The Best Little Jailhouse in Texas"?
The law enforcement officer that the media loves to hate. Thats why this is a headline and for no other reason !
@Rob C 503 Yep that was my exact thought from the way the headline read I took it as ha ha ha some crook to it to that blank'n Joe....hey but the left keeps telling me their news sources are not biased they are the ones that are fair and balanced unlike that FOX station. You know that right wing place that has more left wing people working for it then CNN does.
