NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a 5-year-old New York City boy plunged 10 stories to his death after he jumped from an elevator that got stuck between floors with its doors open.

Police say the boy lived on the 11th floor and was riding with his 8-year-old brother when the elevator stopped Tuesday.

The doors opened, and the boy tried to jump to the lower floor but lost his footing.

Rescuers pulled the boy's brother safely from the elevator.

The cause of the elevator malfunction is being investigated.
