NPS asks for help solving campsite mystery

By Associated Press

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Officials at Sequoia National Park fear an abandoned campsite could mean a hiker is missing and are asking the public for help.

The site near Twin Lakes contains gear and food supplies but has not been occupied lately. Park officials said Tuesday that a hiker saw the same site a week ago but had little information for rangers that would help them locate it.

A helicopter search after two hikers saw the camp Monday helped rangers find it, but there was no identification left behind. There are no reports of overdue hikers or wilderness permits in the area.

Park rangers would like to hear from anyone who has hiked between Lodgepole and Sillman Pass since Oct. 31. The dispatch office can be reached at (559) 565-3341.
