PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Mint is rolling out a new set of quarters, and Oregon's Mount Hood is the one of the first - and the only national forest of the initial bunch - to roll off the metal presses.
On Wednesday morning the first five designs were unveiled, including Mount Hood National Forest. On Oregon's coin the mountain appears behind Lost Lake and a stand of trees. The other coins feature the national parks of Hot Springs, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Grand Canyon.
The new quarter is part of the Mint's new "America the Beautiful" quarter series, honoring national parks and national sights in the U.S. and its territories.
The Mount Hood National Forest coin will start rolling off the mint in November. All 56 coins are expected to be issued over a 12-year span.
This is the second round of commemorative state quarters produced by the U.S. Mint. The first round, 50 State Quarters, ran from 1999 through 2008 and included Crater Lake National Park on Oregon's coin.
