Authorities: Teen shot in head at Atlanta middle school

ATLANTA (AP) - A 14-year-old boy was wounded outside a middle school Thursday afternoon and a fellow student was in custody as a suspect, authorities said. No other students were hurt.
Police swarmed Price Middle School just south of downtown Atlanta after reports of the shooting at 1:50 p.m., while a crowd of anxious parents gathered in the streets, awaiting word on their children. Students were being kept at the locked-down school some two hours after the shooting but television footage showed some of them being dismissed.
The wounded boy was taken "alert, conscious and breathing" to Grady Memorial Hospital, said Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos. Atlanta Public Schools said on their website that the suspect also was a student at Price.
Calls to the school district were not immediately returned.
Atlanta Fire Cpt. Marian McDaniel said the teen was shot in the back of the head and a teacher was treated at the scene for minor cuts.
Shakita Walker, whose daughter is an eighth-grader at the school, said she received a text from her that said "Ma somebody's shooting and somebody got shot." Walker, who works at another school, said she jumped in her car and was thinking "just hurry up and get there."
Walker said her daughter called to tell her that they were being kept in the gymnasium, but she said she was anxious to see her to make sure she was OK.
The fear and anxiety was palpable in the crowd, as one person yelled "Does anyone know what happened?"
Mayor Kasim Reed condemned gun violence in a statement shortly after the shooting and said counselors were already at the school to meet with students, faculty and family members.
"Gun violence in and around our schools is simply unconscionable and must end," Reed said. "Too many young people are being harmed, and too many families are suffering from unimaginable and unnecessary grief."
Outside the school, Laquanda Pittman said she still hasn't heard from her sixth-grade son. She said she heard the news of the shooting on TV and immediately came to the school.
"All types of stuff went through my head. I'm wondering whether it was my child who got shot, is my child OK, did he see what happened?" Pittman said.
She said she just wants to see her son.
"As a parent, you just think you can send your child to school and you hope they come home OK," she said.

Nope, no update to the story yet, at least not here. Curiouser and curiouser. I'm going to go check CNN and Oregonlive.
I wonder why the KATU/Associated Press article makes no mention of:
Â
#1 the school being a gun free zone
#2 the metal detectors not stopping the gunman
#3 the armed guard who did stop the gunman
@Unknown #4 they also failed to mention that the presence of an armed guard did not prevent the shooting from occurring in the first place.
Â
However, doesn't the fact that there was an armed guard make it so that this is no longer a "gun free zone"?
@JTesla #5 The armed guard prevented this from becoming a mass victim shooting spree.
Â
Â
@JTesla According to O.C.G.A. § 16-11-127.1, all Georgia government schools are gun free, exception made for law enforcement, which the armed guard was (off duty cop).
@Unknown Some people don't want mass shooting, they just want to take out a bully or end a love triangle. I'm not saying that an armed guard shouldn't have been there, but this school wasn't a gun free zone.
KATU, You Failed to update the story. may it is time we start doing news on the news agencies and start tracking on "Reliable resources" You are guilty just as MSN News is for editing stories. YOU are just as guilty. in fact, that story you posted gives us more reason to search the facts. are we the ones to correct you?
Â
Well, I think I will be headed to the AP from now on and reviewing your stories..You also failed to report on a
Magnitude 6.0 63mi W of Craig, Alaska Event ID: usc000ez52 Strength: Magnitude 6.0 (Strong)

Which effects us. here in the US.
Â
oh and Mt st Helens area had 2 small quakes on the 31 as well 4:01:13 GMT and 1:3:17 GMT which Our windows shook a little.
Â
Maybe an Erupting mountain might get your attention?
@lee986321 If you are just now noticing earthquakes on St. Helens then you haven't been paying attention for the last 30 years. You obviously finding news elsewhere, so I assume that you will abandon KATU for that source. Bye.
on the flip side..
EVERETT, Wash. (AP) â Police say a bystander fired a shot into the air to scare a man who had been chasing a woman and threatening her with a knife in Everett, Wash.
Police officer Aaron Snell said the man with the knife stopped chasing the woman Wednesday afternoon and was detained by several other people until police arrived and arrested him for unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon. Police say the woman fled.
@lee986321 Assault, or worse prevented by bystander with a gun......hmmm I wonder how much press this will get?
@Reeldeal101   None, because it was a good gun incident. K2 wouldn't want to report that as it would go against all its liberal beliefs.
A fist fight? Nope.
Knife fight? Nope.
Baseball bat? Nope.
Â
It's another gun! Shock!! How strange that the gun seems to be the go to weapon these days. I suppose it has absolutely nothing to do with the nature of a gun itself. Nope, can't be...a gun is no worse or dangerous than any other weapon.
@ormom And your point is...what, exactly? That school children shouldn't have guns? That's already illegal. Schools should keep guns out? This one had armed security and a metal detector? We should ban guns because who needs civil rights anyway? What do you advocate?
So basically, a good guy with a gun stopped the bad guy with a gun from killing anyone else? Yet having armed security in every school in the country is unthinkable and that people dont want more guns in schools because it doesnt stop anything? Interesting, well I think this story speaks for its self.Â
 @commonsense33Â
Most objections I've seen relate to arming teachers, not to having armed security.
@commonsense33 It's funny how quickly the tide of opinion turned regarding KATU presenting this story.
Yet another responsible gun owner.
Another anti gun idiot........
Another student brings mom or dads gun to school?
Aren't you guys giving KATU a little more credit than it deserves if you think it can effectively pursue an agenda (other than trying to get ratings)?
Â
Why does a story about a shooting at a school get posted but not one about drunk driving? Is it because KATU's politburo reviews each story before it's posted? Or could it be that the CMS that operates this site is currently set to post anything that includes "guns" and "school" because that's a hot topic that will attract eyeballs?
Â
Why does an AP story on Yahoo contain details that the KATU story doesn't? Because it's an update version of this story - notice how the missing details all appear at the top of the story right above this line: "THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below."
Â
KATU probably doesn't refresh this site as frequently as Yahoo refreshes itself.
Â
I know, I know - just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you...
@Max Quinn for the same reason why a positive story about a guy owith a gun written by the AP didn't get posted either..so like I say..its all geared to taking our gun writes away...OH and jsut as I predicted...right on schedule...another shooting...
Â
People will be come more violent. looks like more people are going to get more guns.
@Max Quinn  I would agree.... KATU's first and formost agenda is to get "clicks" on stories as thats my guess on how they get money from their advertisers. Â
Â
I guess another way of putting it is KATU can't wait to capitalize on school shooting as it makes good money for them. Screw the actual news, they bury at the bottom of the home  page.
@Max Quinn Did you hear an armed security guard stopped the Altanta shooter? That's what's most important here. They can update the story any time they choose, so, we'll see how long it takes.Â
Â
(You do, however, make good points here.)
Anybody besides me wonder why a teen killed in Atlanta with a gun makes national news....... and yet a teen killed in Atlanta by a drunk driver does NOT make the national news???Â
Â
The only answer I can come up with is the agenda of the media....
(If) (and only if) both kids were involved in gang activity, odds are that their real dads are in on way or another, missing. That seems to be a constant among gang members (parasites).Â
@last boyscout My observation of most school shootings, with the exception of the recent one in Connecticut, is that the common denominator is some kind of bullying.
Any of you guys want to venture a guess why KATU isn't telling you how the suspect was apprehended? Here's the a COMPLETE AP story, starting with the first paragraph:
Â
"ATLANTA (AP) â Atlanta's police chief says an armed officer working at a city middle school where a teen was shot was able to disarm the suspect moments after the shooting...." http://news.yahoo.com/authorities-teen-wounded-ga-middle-school-215019573.html
@Playanekes Interesting, but yet again I'm left wanting more information. We are incorrectly told that a person with a CHL stopped Gabby Gifford's shooter, yet that person wasn't the first to do the stopping, and the fact that he had a firearm was not a factor.
Â
What I'm saying is, an armed officer using his firearm to stop the shooter... great. However, if his firearm wasn't even a factor then it might as well be pointed out that he has a fishing license.
Having carried a gun in an official capacity, I can tell you that it speaks volumes without ever being drawn. People behave differently when an officer has a gun and a uniform. Compliance is easier to obtain - the weapon doesn't have to be drawn or used to have an effect.
Nutz, I had a brief attack of sanity.... forgive me.....I forgot that the 'truth' is whatever the press says it is and not actually happened. I've experienced that first hand.... if I hadn't actually attended the incident, I wouldn't have recognized it after the reporters used their 'artistic license'.
@Owlspot Oh I agree that it does, but there are those that look for and twist stories to fit their agenda. That is done by both sides. In the Tuscon shooting for instance the carrying of the firearm played no role what-so-ever in stopping the shooter, but people have twisted facts to fit their narrative.
Â
If it turns out that he drew his gun and it was even a slight factor, great you'll then have a "only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun" story. Granted, having a good guy with a gun didn't stop the initial shooting, but I'll leave that detail for a later discussion.
@Playanekes Yep. There's a whole bunch of little facts that were omitted from K2 in their ongoing efforts at fear mongering regarding the issue of guns.Â

Â
You pointed out the most glaring, that an armed police officer was the one who disarmed him and got him to surrender.Â
Â
yet another;
Â
"Police spokesman Carlos Campos says investigators believe the shooting was not random and that something occurred between the two people involved that may have led up to it."
Â
I've also read that there is suspicion that both the assailant and the victim were known gang affiliates.Â
@MarkKpic  @Playanekes better screen shot this, see how long it stays up before taken down.
@MarkKpic I think the district is going to have to explain how the kid got a gun through their security system. This is where I'm an advocate of dogs, which could have smelled the CLP or gun oil before the kid got in the door, I think.Â
If the governments wants to help with the control of guns, let them send dollars to the state, counties and cities to beef up law enforcement and jails and mental hospitals to keep citizens safe from crime. if the government wants to help its citizens, help get illegal guns off the streets and stop the drugs flowing around. Passing another law or even a dozen is just a joke on the law abiding people of the U.S.A.
@32jim2 You crazies are the very ones who have defunded law enforcement. You have blocked the creation of the databases that would make it possible to find a gun involved in a crime. You have refused to confirm a Director of the ATF. You refuse to endorse universal background checks. Oh, and who started the unnecessary, mismanaged wars and decided that we could do it off the books without revenue to pay for them? Crazies like you, in case the correct answer to my rhetorical question escapes you.
@Mechanic  @32jim2 YOU crazies are allowing your government to buy M4 fully-automatic rifles for "Personal Defense Weapons" while telling you that if YOU buy one, well, it's just for committing mass murder. 'Course, some number of these are probably already in Mexico:Personal Defense Weapons Solicitation Solicitation Number: HSCEMS-12-R-00011Agency: Department of Homeland Security Office: Immigration & Customs Enforcement Location: ICE-OAQ-MSSynopsis: Added: Jun 07, 2012 11:47 am This announcement is being placed in accordance with the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) paragraph 5.207. It is a combined synopsis/solicitation for commercial items. 5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense. ..https://www.fbo.gov/?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=d791b6aa0fd9d3d8833b2efa08300033&tab=core&_cview=0
@Mechanic that's right i'm crazy. I want my government to be run by the people for the people. i have no power to do anything you list here it is all up to those politicians who listen to the lobbyists.
@32jim2 @Mechanic Buy the way I sugest you do some real research. The gun lobby paid for and built the NCIC check system years prior to the passing of the Brady bill. They also pay the most in taxes to fund state and national forests, guns, and ammo are taxed just for that reason. They train you Law enforcement for FREE! Would you like the LEO links? They push the hardest for increased jail sentances for gun crimes, Liberal DAs have decided to just let them walk thouhgh.... Provide free gun safety classes to the public, provided over 30 million firearms locks... for free. You can get those at your local police stations, thank you very much. Infact, a large percentage of LEOs, roughly 70% vote republican, same as the military... are against these new laws. How about these numbers, thanks to the gun lobby, homicides with rifles decreased (according to the FBI) from just about 700 homicides in 2004 (the end of the 1994 AWB) to 311 in 2011. Accidental deaths due to firearms decreased to 1% of all accidental deaths the same year. Again due to the gun lobby. So while you are on your high an mighty alter, please tell me how in 7 years there was a decrease in rifle related homicedes of 50% while the evil rifles you want to ban have been selling in the multi millions and are now the number 1 selling firearm in the US 5 years running.
Â
@32jim2 My biggest concern is that when a government turns it's military to protect (control) the civilian population we wind up with a police state.  A police state with all of it's controls (curfew, paper checks, house-to-house searches, etc) is the only way to manage a population to ensure the lowest crime rate possible.  Punishments for suspected trouble-makers include disappearing for an unknown amount of time.  Be careful what you ask for, you may get it and the people will cheer it all the way into law.
@negativerep i don't want the military to protect us i want the federal dollars sent to local government for more police and jails and to prevent crime. i said nothing of military law being used.
@Sundowner i don't like strings attached either. ie you can get a federal grant for $150,000 to have flyers printed up to send out to everyone about crime prevention BUT you can't use it to pay 3 people for a year to be police officers with it.
@32jim2 I don't necessarily have an issue with that, but then you have Conservatives who'll be screaming to leave the Feds out of it (state's rights).  Because with Federal dollars comes Federal input and regulation.  It's a bit of a not totally win/not totally win situation.
@negativerep  @32jim2 A friend of mine said it this way:
Â
"When did it become fashionable to be in lockstep with the government?"
Â
Millions of illegals to get amnesty while this veteran loses his freedom, his right to vote, and becomes a criminal for having magazines in his trunk:
Â
http://gunssavelives.net/blog/decorated-army-veteran-arrested-in-ny-for-possession-of-30-round-ar-magazines/
@32jim2 I'm willing to pay higher taxes for those very purposes.  You?
@Sundowner  @32jim2 Yeah, if the DHS stops the order of 7000 M4 assault weapons for "personal defense weapons" for federal employees, and stops sending another billion dollars, 220 tanks and 22 F-16 fighters to Egypt while their guy's right-handjob-man calls the holocaust an American hoax.
Â
When those happen, I'm all in. Until then, all they're doing is giving guns to our enemies and taking them from our citizens. Unfortunately, I think they already bought these burst- or fully-automatic "personal defense weapons" because this document is dated in June:
Â

Â
Which means, for all we know, they're already in the hands of the Egyptians or the Mexican drug cartels, but, they sure weren't available at the embassy in Benghazi, were they?
@NotAChance  @Sundowner  @32jim2 We have equipped Egypt with the largest F-16 fleet in the world.
@Playanekes  @Sundowner  @32jim2 And how about those F-16's that they want headed to Morsi?Â
Â
Brilliant, just brilliant.
Â
@Sundowner i'm tired of our government sending other countries billions of dollars to keep the peace there instead of sending it to the states, counties and cities. we are at war with the bad guy and so far the bad guy is winning.Â
@Sundowner @32jim2 Count me in on the tax proposal. Good government costs. Nobody can afford cheap government, which is why we are in the fiscal and moral morass of today.
@32jim2 @Van Tucko And now we've just devolved into a place with no answers.  There are many, many things I want government to spend money on, as well as many I don't.  We don't get to pick, though -- the people we elect have that burden.
@Sundowner  @32jim2 what he means to say is....no. he is not willing to pay for it.Â
@Sundowner i'm saying i want the feds to reallocate the money i already pay in taxes to local use not to raise local taxes so the feds cut their portion. the more we pay in local taxes the less the feds feel they need to return to the local areas. my taxes did go up this year so i'm paying more for the same services.
@32jim2 What I'm saying, regardless of our foreign policy or anything else, are you willing to put your money where your mouth is?  I am.
