Sandy no longer a hurricane, but still a dangerous storm

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Stripped of hurricane status but every bit as dangerous, the weather monster known as Sandy wheeled toward the New Jersey and Delaware coast Monday after washing away part of the Atlantic City boardwalk, putting the presidential campaign on hold and threatening to cripple Wall Street and the New York subway system with an epic surge of seawater.
Just before it was expected to blow ashore in the evening, the National Hurricane Center announced that it considered Sandy no longer a hurricane but a wintry hybrid known as a post-tropical storm.
The decision was technical and based on the storm's shape and its mix of cold and warm temperatures — a distinction that meant more to meteorologists than the 50 million people still in peril. The storm's top sustained winds weakened only slightly, to 85 mph from 90.
As it closed it, Sandy knocked out electricity to more than 1.5 million people and figured to upend life for tens of millions more. It smacked the boarded-up big cities of the Northeast corridor, from Washington and Baltimore to Philadelphia, New York and Boston, with stinging rain and gusts of more than 85 mph.
It was expected to come ashore in southern New Jersey or Delaware, converging with two cold-weather systems to form a fearsome superstorm of snow, rain and wind. Forecasters warned of 20-foot waves bashing into the Chicago lakefront and up to 3 feet of snow in West Virginia.
Airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights, disrupting the plans of travelers all over the world, and storm damage was projected at $10 billion to $20 billion, meaning it could prove to be one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.
At least two deaths were blamed on Sandy: One person died in a storm-related traffic accident in Maryland, and a Pennsylvania man fell from a tree while trimming branches in preparation for the hurricane.

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney canceled their campaign appearances at the very height of the race, with just over a week to go before Election Day. The president pledged the government's help and made a direct plea from the White House to those in the storm's path.
"When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate," he said. "Don't delay, don't pause, don't question the instructions that are being given, because this is a powerful storm."
Sandy, which killed 69 people in the Caribbean before making its way up the Atlantic, began to hook left at midday and was about 40 miles south of Atlantic City by evening, moving west-northwest at almost 30 mph — faster than forecasters expected.
The storm lost its status as hurricane because it no longer had a warm core center nor the convection — the upward air movement in the eye — that traditional hurricanes have, but it was still as dangerous as it was when it was considered a hurricane, according to National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen.
Pete Wilson, who owns an antiques shop in Cape May, N.J., at the state's southern tip and directly in Sandy's path, said the water was 6 inches above the bottom edge of the door. He had already taken a truckload of antiques out but was certain he would take a big hit.
"My jewelry cases are going to be toast," he said. "I am not too happy. I am just going to have to wait, and hopefully clean up."
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said people were stranded in Atlantic City, which sits on a barrier island and was mostly under water late Monday. He accused the mayor of allowing them to stay there.
With the hurricane fast approaching, Christie warned it was no longer safe for rescuers, and advised people who didn't evacuate the barrier islands to "hunker down" until morning.
"I hope, I pray, that there won't be any loss of life because of it," he said.
The storm's projected path would put New York City and Long Island along its dangerous northeastern wall, facing perhaps 11 feet of water.
While the hurricane's 90 mph winds registered as only a Category 1 on a scale of five, it packed "astoundingly low" barometric pressure, giving it terrific energy to push water inland, said Kerry Emanuel, a professor of meteorology at MIT.
"We are looking at the highest storm surges ever recorded" in the Northeast, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director for Weather Underground, a private forecasting service. "The energy of the storm surge is off the charts, basically."
In New York City, authorities worried that salt water would seep through the boarded-up street grates and through the sandbags placed at subway entrances, crippling the electrical connections needed to operate the subway.
Authorities also feared the surge of seawater could damage the underground electrical and communications lines in lower Manhattan that are vital to the nation's financial center.
Consolidated Edison said it was considering cutting off the power to lower Manhattan to try to protect the system from damage from salt water.
Hours before landfall, there was graphic evidence of the storm's power.
A construction crane atop a luxury high-rise in New York City collapsed in the wind and dangled precariously 74 floors above the street. Forecasters said the wind at the top the building may have been close to 95 mph.
Off North Carolina, a replica of the 18th-century sailing ship HMS Bounty that was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" went down in the storm, and 14 crew members were rescued by helicopter from rubber lifeboats bobbing in 18-foot seas. Another crew member was found hours later but was unresponsive. The captain was missing.
At Cape May, water sloshed over the seawall, and it punched through dunes in other seaside communities. Sandy also tore away an old section of Atlantic City's historic boardwalk.
"When I think about how much water is already in the streets, and how much more is going to come with high tide tonight, this is going to be devastating," said Bob McDevitt, president of the main Atlantic City casino workers union. "I think this is going to be a really bad situation tonight."
In Maryland, at least 100 feet of a fishing pier at the beach resort of Ocean City was destroyed, and Gov. Martin O'Malley said there would be devastating flooding from the swollen Chesapeake Bay.
"There will be people who die and are killed in this storm," he said.
At least half a million people had been ordered to evacuate, including 375,000 from low-lying parts of New York City, and by the afternoon authorities were warning that it could be too late for people who had not left already.
Millions of people stayed home from work. Sheila Gladden evacuated her home in Philadelphia's flood-prone Eastwick neighborhood, which took on 5½ feet of water during Hurricane Floyd in 1999, and headed for a hotel.
"I'm not going through this again," she said.
Those who stayed behind had few ways to get out. New York's subways, which serve 5 million people a day, were shut down. The Holland Tunnel connecting New York to New Jersey was closed, as was a tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan, and the city planned to shut down the Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington, the Verrazano-Narrows and several other spans because of high winds.
Stock and bond markets were closed Monday and Tuesday, the first shutdown since the days after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 and the first two-day closing of the stock market because of weather since a blizzard in 1888. The New York Stock Exchange is inside the mandatory evacuation zone in lower Manhattan, blocks from New York Harbor.
If the storm reaches the higher estimate of $20 billion in damage, that would put it ahead of Hurricane Irene, which raked the Northeast in August 2011 and caused $16 billion in damage. Hurricane Katrina, which killed 1,200 people, cost $108 billion.

According the weather service, the storm surge that will strike Southeastern Connecticut tonight will exceed that of the 1938 hurricane. The '38 hurricane did so much damage that parts of the coastal area in Connecticut were never rebuilt - houses were washed out to sea and localities barred any building in those locations. It's an unbelievable storm.
@Max Quinn Its an engineering achievement!  A hurricane in October!
@portlandborn83  @Max Quinn Looks like they've been getting a lot of practice with October hurricanes over the years: http://www.stormpulse.com/storm-archive/us-landfalling-hurricanes/oct
@Max Quinn Thanks for sharing, didnt know this...
So much for those who said this was hyped up and was another non event! Better safe then sorry MO! And I see the pics of those stayin and getting too close .. dumb, real dumb moves!Â
Â
Mother nature can sure take a chunk out of the hinney.. and her fangs are very sharp!
Good thing Sandy came before Romney is elected and he privatizes and does away with FEMA.
What is messed up is they are playing 2 live feeds at once even though I did not want them to be played!
@portlandborn83 If your using firefox by any chance, download Flash block to stop it. Then you only have to click on the button if you want to actually see it..
WOW, could we spare the corporate political jargon and try to stay on topic here? I'd like to read about the impending NATURAL DISASTER and not see people whining about Obama and Mitt Romney for just a millisecond.
Amazing how Obama is all over this but had no compunctions ignoring the pleas for help when it came to protecting our embassy our ambassador, other Americansâ¦there is nothing Obama can do to stem the tide of this storm but there was plenty he could have done to avert the death of 4 Americans in Benghaziâ¦.
Â
@KHEB Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! KHEB wins again! He's the first person to make the connection between a hurricane and Libya. Just like how he connected Harry Reid's car accident and Libya last week. Congratualtion, KHEB!
Amazing you're willing to politicize a tragedy to advance your agenda. Can't even wait til the body is cold can ya?
@quackmire ...Nope...and it looks like you are one of the "I don't want to know why Obama is so bad for this country"...no hope for you....there is nothing your adored idol can do for any of the people in the storms path...including you.
@Playanekes  @quackmire ...hey, you don't have to read whatever you don't want to read...I am curious tho, what is "STFU"?  I'll probably be sorry I asked...but like I said, "I'm curious".  Another thing - when are you going to figure out how the shift key works or are you just plain lazy and rude?.
@KHEB  @quackmire I'M A NON-OBAMA VOTER ASKING YOU TO PLEASE STFU ABOUT OBAMA FOR AWHILE. PLEASE. PRETTY PLEASE.
Â
Give it a rest.
@quackmire Exactly. I'm much more Democratic in thought than I am Republican, but I don't blindly regurgitate nonsense, especially in a place where it is inappropriate and frankly doesn't even make sense (which in this case is an article about a hurricane). I'm skeptical of ALL politics, even within the Democratic party. They're just as screwed up as the Republican party, although I'd say they are 75% more logical about social issues than Republicans are.
Exactly. In the eyes of people like KHEB, Obama can do no right. If he does do something good/right, they'll distract you just like he's doing above.
"KHEB" Put down the crack pipe, grab yourself a beer and relax. I think the story here is about a storm (actually 3). And, just so I put in my political opinion to give some people amunition to bi-tch at me... Maybe Obama, in his own way, is trying to get a jump on this potential disaster so it doesn't turn into another post- Katrina nightmare? Â
"The president declared emergencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing federal relief work to begin well ahead of time. He promised the government would "respond big and respond fast" after the storm hits."
Sounds to me like he plans on at least trying to help keep it together. Maybe we should try waiting till after to judge his actions?
Like Bush got a free pass on 9/11? Have a nice day!
@quackmire ...it's amazing how people start squirming when the truth is told...and you cannot help but question why Obama has been so careful to cover this potentially devastating for many people but could not bother to take the Benghazi tragedy seriously and has been deep into the cover-up hoping people like you will give him a free-ride on it...
Actually I can't stand the man, think he's a terrible president.  Unlike you, however, I don't need to make vague, ridiculous connections between unrelated events to this president in order to make myself feel important, and try to show him in a negative light like you do. It's people like YOU that there is no hope for, my friend.
Â
You see, when you post on EVERY story and find a way to slam Obama in it's comments section, you just make yourself look more pathetic....
It is rough for those on the East coast. A lot rougher then we have it. One report told about having to rescue people who did not want to evacuate when told to.
As one poster mentioned on a different site, the government when they put out the evacuate notices, should tell all those who do not feel they need to evacuate, should mark their social security number on their left arm with permanent ink, and drivers license or ID number on the right arm. That will assist in identification of the bodies.
Those that like to get up super close with their cameras...then end up swept away or injured, which then puts a rescuer at risk.
I hope all friends, family and vendors on the East coast come through this safely!!
@Just Lookin When the county tells you to evacuate, you evacuate. Stubbornness has cost so many people their lives in situations like this. When Katrina hit the Gulf Coast there was a nursing home outside of New Orleans whose owners ignored the evacuation warnings and something like 30 elderly people died when the floods hit. As a result of that, the owners were charged with 30 some counts of negligent homicide, although I don't believe they were convicted.
I am keeping a VERY close eye on this storm as I have friends and family in the Red Zone. My father lives about six miles from Boston Harbor. Needless to say, I am very concerned.
@theprodigal I hope your family and your friends come through this okay.
@theprodigal You do that now
It's a BEAUTIFUL DAY in Victoria BC!
Not so bad here in Salem, either. Seems a little warmer than it should be,but I am not complaining. At least it is not hot and dry anymore. My garden said "AHHHH" the day it started raining. (so did my wallet when I quit having to water).
Anyone notice how this likely will delay the election? Anyone notice how they have been getting us scared about this even a week ahead of time? Did you know that our government can modify the weather like China?
@portlandborn83 HAARP is a true entity...however what it can actually do makes me skeptical. If it could do all that some conspiracy believers think, then why haven't we used it against our enemies in the middle east? Give 'em snow and make them run. I know that the US and Canada under the UN agreed to not do weather modification in warfare, I'm just wondering if it's all that some people think it is. 1888 saw a horrific White Hurricane in New York and several states....long before science even knew what weather modification meant or capable of.
@fracas blaming HAARP for hurricanes is like blaming radio antennas for lightning storms, and people who believe that nonsense need to turn off conspiracy radio, stop playing Dungeons and Dragons, and read some actual radio science books.
@Playanekes I did not say anything about haarp.
@portlandborn83  @Playanekes Isn't it interesting that the term HAARP doesn't appear once in the 14-page document?

Not dealing with a little paranoia, are you,"portlandborn83"? A whole new conspiracy theory movie comming out: "Obama and Romney in control of hurricane stop elections"
They steered Katrina straight towards New Orleans with chemtrails and geoengineering; if they can do it once, they can do it again.
Â
Here's the october surprise they were talking about.

@Playanekes  @Max Well, I think you are the one that is stupid because you've bought the government cool-aid that was spoonfed to your mouth by the corporate controlled media. Â
Â
So can you explain building 7 blowing up then? Â Can you explain the fire chiefs say "stand back its coming down." Â Can you explain the BBC reporter say "building 7 has been destroyed" but then a second later it falls down right in front of her? Â Can you explain how almost half of the building did not show up to work that day?
Â
And I bet you believe al-quaeda is in Iran and Syria when in fact these countries are anti-al qaeda. Â
Can you explain why about half the country thinks 9/11 was an inside job?
@portlandborn83  @Max Ah, yeah.  It's apparently more difficult to doctor a soundtrack and release it to a bunch of gullible idiots on the internet than it is to secretly wire up a building to explode in the middle of New York City without anybody inside or out noticing, and fooling FDNY investigators themselves.
Â
Right.
Â
Of course, I'm a flight instructor so clearly I'm brainwashed and part of the vast government chemtrail conspiracy. We all are. Every single flight instructor is brainwashed, and people who get their information off of Youtube and other internet sites...well... they've got ALL the answers if you don't mind the answer changing a little as each theory (holograms, cruise missiles, mass hallucination, thermite...) gets shot down.
Â
It's as stupid as stupid gets. It really is. I'm that brainwashed and stupid, and I can STILL offset an audio sample on a video track using the free video editing software that comes with every version of Windows.
 @portlandborn83  @JTesla CHEMTRAILS! HAHAHAAA!!
@portlandborn83 Are you, by any chance, sitting in your mom's basement wearing a tin foil hat?
@Max Quinn Thats what happened to building 7, you want the video link that show the reporter saying it already happened but then it falls in the background?
@JTesla OK, here's a link about it from the council on foreign relations:
Â
http://www.cfr.org/content/thinktank/GeoEng_041209.pdf
The question is whether you will read it or not...
@portlandborn83 Yep. And the Twin Towers were wired for demolition....
@portlandborn83 "chem trails" LOL I love that! Hey, post some links on chem trails. It's clear enough today that I might be able to see some.
And straight from the document itself:
Â
"We will probe whether it is possible to limit the use of geoengineering to circumstances of collective action by the international community in the face of true global emergencies and what might happen when there are disputes over when the emergency âtriggerâ should be pulled."
Here's a paper on geo-engineering from the council of foreign relations:
http://www.cfr.org/content/thinktank/GeoEng_041209.pdf
Â
Tons of people on the east coast reported vast amounts of chem trails before the storm hit!
@portlandborn83  Usually have to wait for Lee123456 (or whatever) to come online in order to get a dose of this kind of stuff... Premium crazy. I thought it was sarcasm at first... If it still is, well done.
@portlandborn83 Oh, this just keeps getting better and better. Go on...
@portlandborn83 There is no delaying the election. They've held these things without electricity, running water, or motorized transportation. I know that in modern times that is akin to an apocalypse, but even with the end of the world the election will still forge ahead.
@JTesla I predict that it will be delayed for the first time in history, I bet $20!
Acually I was right and they delayed the election in New York until Tuesday this week...
@JTesla Guess it didn't happen, but if Obama is not elected, watch out for mass protests!
@portlandborn83 What were you saying again about the election being delayed?
But no one around to cast the votes...
@portlandborn83 $20 on Congress not only agreeing, but agreeing to make the states waste millions? Well Congress doesn't mind the states wasting millions, but they wouldn't agree on this. Polls will still open, votes will still be cast.
@portlandborn83 LOL! Hey, Ralph, here it comes!
Â
It's a Bush/Cheney/Obama conspiracy.
