Boy, girl lose fingers during school tug-of-war game
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Two teenagers whose fingers were severed during a tug-of-war game at a California high school were recovering Tuesday, but it was unclear whether doctors were able to reattach the digits.
The boy and girl, both under age 18, had stable vital signs after undergoing hours of surgery, Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center spokeswoman Rosa Sacca said.
"They're awake and alert. Parents are at their bedsides," she said.
Sacca said she could not release any information on whether surgeons were able to reattach the fingers.
The teens lost four fingers each from their right hand, and the girl also lost the thumb on her left hand, she said.
However, sheriff's Sgt. Jorge Marchena told The Associated Press the girl lost three fingers on one hand and two on another, while the boy lost four fingers from one hand.
The discrepancy could not immediately be resolved.
The girl is a senior and varsity soccer player, and the boy is a football player, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.
They were participating in a lunchtime tug-of-war game on Monday during a Spirit Week celebration at South El Monte High School when they were injured.
The rope was wrapped around the students' hands, and it snapped, amputating their fingers, Eddie Pickett, a supervising dispatcher with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, told NBC News.
No criminal investigation will be done because the injuries were accidental, Marchena said.
"Somehow they got their hands tied up on the rope," he said.
Classes continued Tuesday, with counselors available to help students on the campus, El Monte Union High School District Superintendent Nick J. Salerno said.
"Our whole focus right now is providing support for the kids," Salerno said.
Officials will review all planned Spirit Week activities "that could even possibly have a risk of going wrong," he said.
The district also plans to review policies to see if any need to be changed regarding tug-of-war games.
Salerno said schools have conducted such games for years.
"I've never heard of anything like this happening," he said. "It's unbelievable to me, it's shocking."
Similar injuries have occurred elsewhere.
In 2008, an 8-year-old girl nearly lost four fingers when her hand got tangled in a rope during a tug-of-war in Fergus Falls, Minn. The fingers remained attached by tendons and were reattached.
In 2007, two students at a high school in Parker, Colo., had their right hands partially severed during a tug-of-war at a pep rally.
In 1997, two men had their left arms torn off when a rope snapped during a tug-of-war in Taiwan that involved some 1,600 participants. Doctors managed to reattach the limbs.
well at least they weren't playing with imaginary weapons...
We used to do this in grade school where I went. Besides some grass stains and people falling on each other nobody ever lost fingers. Yikes!!
@Liberty4_WA   Don't forget about the rope burns! NO! Not that! Our poor little kids getting hurt? Oh my!
KATU mislead, itis teens that loos digits, but this form of trickery is legit in Journalism. they went for theh Shock and Awe
I could do without tug-of-war, but I wouldn't want to do without my fingers.
Stay out of the bight!!
We have snapped the rope on a tug-of-war once, each side about 50 strong and pulling in jerks....when it snapped in the middle almost everyone hit the dirt. Luckily no one wrapped rope around their hands or arms. It was a nice thick rope also.
Â
Hope these two get the correct fingers on the correct hands of the correct person...Hopefully a good recovery!
Great...now tug-of-war will be banned. And I just bought a concealed license. Dang!
Â
Hope the kids get all their correct digits back and that they heal successfully!
@Mikey Wow, a concealed license for rope? Where did you get it, I need one too. Did you go someplace special?Â
For rope they print the palms of your hands right?
Â
Have seen a few fingers broken in a good game of tugnwar never a sever. Yikes, heal quickly as physical therapy will be your friend.
So they are going to ban ropes? Can I still get a concealed rope license?
@wondering as long as it's not a hemp rope.
If they would have played immaginary tug-of- war this would not have happened.
A child in my family lost a finger on a table saw. Another child I knew, lost a finger in a spining bicycle wheel. Still another lost one in a car door. THEN there is my old shop teacher..... MR. "No thumbs" Thompson.
@katufanman You must have finger bones everywhere!!
Here's a thought...since the majority of childhood games are not allowed anymore, could it be that no one really knew how to hold the rope while playing Tug-of-War? Kinda sad how that is happening more and more.Â
Â
I hope the kids have a speedy recovery. Can't imagine how awful the scene was.Â
When I first read the headline I thought the "boy" and "girl" were grade school students. Then the story informs us the kids were just about adults. Oh well, it did get me to read the story! They had to have the rope really wrapped around their fingers for this to have happened. Hope doctors are able to get at least some of the fingers re-attached! This was a bizarre accident!Â
@jpk I still don't understand how that happened.
Im trying to visualize how the heck this happened. I've been in tug of wars that were 250 strong on either side of the rope, and generally the rope was fairly thick. Were they using twine or something?? Just cant picture it.
Wow...I never heard of that happening before, but obviously, it has... Â We played tug-of-war when I was growing up, although we didn't usually have more than a couple dozen kids involved in it at any one time... It wasn't planned that way, it was just the way it turned out... We got dirty, and a little "scuffed up" sometimes, but nobody ever got seriously hurt (well, unless your mom caught you playing tug-of-war in your good clothes!)... Â :-)
Sure hope the fingers can be successfully re-attached to their respective owners...Â
Great, now they will ban playing "tug-o-war" in all schools because, after all, it is such a dangerous game.
@wondering Kind of like dodge ball!
Must have been an assault rope....
They should ban ropes that can handle more than 6 tuggers at a time.
That's an example of doing it wrong.
Something went wrong here but I can't put my finger on it.
Â
Ban tug-of-war........
Welp, no more "five finger discounts" for those two!
how is this even possible? they had to tie themselves to the rope?
@iamright555 Yes, if you wrap the rope around your arm or your hand, you risk losing a limb. People don't realize how much tension is in the rope when 1000 lb of people are pulling at the other end.
@Riley35  @iamright555 you cant wrap your hand .. you have others pulling on the rope keeping it tight.. these people have to be really stupid.
Were they using piano wire instead of rope? Sounds like one serious tug-o-war.
When will they ever enact rope laws ?????
It's all fun and games until some loses a finger. .. or is it an eye???  Whatever. ..
Hope they reattach them to the right people.Â
