Detective: Girls knew of brother only through his screams

DALLAS, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia teen was so malnourished he still had his baby teeth at age 18 and was so isolated that his sisters who lived in the same home had no contact with him aside from hearing his screams, detectives testified Thursday.
"He screams for food and screams to go to the bathroom. That's all they know of their brother," said Detective Kyle Shelton with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office.
Eighteen-year-old Mitch Comer's stepfather, Paul Comer, and mother, Sheila Comer, told investigators they confined the teen to the room for punishment.
"They both conceded that that was his life," Detective Kevin Morgan said.
Paul and Sheila Comer were arrested last month and face charges of cruelty to children and false imprisonment after the teen raised the suspicion of a security guard at a Los Angeles bus station. He had $200 and a list of homeless shelters he said was given to him by his stepfather on his 18th birthday, though Paul Comer has said the teen wanted to be an actor. Mitch Comer said he suffered years of abuse after being taken out of school in eighth grade.
The Comers appeared in Paulding County Magistrate Court on Thursday for a probable cause hearing dressed in orange and white striped jail suits with their ankles and wrists chained.
Mitch Comer told investigators he was confined to a bathroom for a year and wasn't fed often, occasionally getting soup or cereal but little of substance, Morgan said. The Comers' two daughters, who are 11 and 13, told investigators they "thought he had brown hair" but never saw him, Shelton testified.
The boy, just 5-foot-1 and weighing 87 pounds when he was found in a downtown Los Angeles bus station, was so slight that he looked far younger than 18 and still had his baby teeth, which doctors said was a result of malnourishment, Morgan said.
"I thought he was a 12-year-old boy," Morgan said of the teen. The teen's skin was translucent and he told investigators he hadn't seen the sun in two years, Morgan said.
Authorities say the Comers sometimes made Mitch Comer kneel on the floor with his forehead against a wall, his hands behind his head and his feet lifted off the ground. Mitch Comer told investigators he sometimes had to remain in that position for six to eight hours, while Paul Comer said it was only 40 minutes at a time.
Paul Comer told investigators he brought Mitch Comer food at 7 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. each day and fed him whatever the family was eating. Paul Comer said he sometimes encouraged his stepson to go outside, but that the teen declined.
Mitch Comer told investigators that he was first locked in a bathroom that measures about 6 feet by 8 feet for about a year and that the bathroom door had a deadbolt on it so he couldn't get out. Then he was moved to the adjoining bedroom. He couldn't get out of the door because there was a refrigerator pushed in front of it, he told investigators. Shelton said he asked the teen why he never tried to escape through the window, and the teen responded, "I'm afraid of bugs."
The entire house was dirty and smelled bad, the detectives said, but the bathroom where Mitch Comer stayed was sparkling clean. The teen said he used to clean it because he had nothing else to do, Shelton said.

I hope these two get life in prison for this.. As for the sisters, shame on you for not telling a teacher what was going on with your brother, the sisters are as much to blame for this... I hope they all live in hell for what they did to this boy..
They were mean and disgusting to their children. Is the answer to now be mean and disgusting to them? Then we are doing exactly what we said was wrong...........
@the dave The difference is they've EARNED that treatment. The boy didn't.Â
There are two solitary 8 by 10 cells with their name on them. Let them live there without TV, internet, or outside contact of any sort for 5 years. Then deal the punishment.
Also, I think that Sheila Comer should put in a men's prison. Though completely separate from her hubby. And may they both experience UNPLANNED SEXUAL EVENTS while behind bars.
I think this couple should be PUT TO DEATH.
Â
Sadly, this kind of abuse is quite common among the kind of dog humpin, snuff chewin hillbillies that infest small town america.
There should be a lot more arrests than just these two., like the grandparents and any friends that may have known of this situation... I don't understand how a human being could do this to another.. I hope these two get life in prison.
This punishment sounds good enough for the KATU community.
They was asking the same exact thing you know ....that band from the 70's
"Three Dog Night "
"How.....can people be so heartless ?.....How can people be so cruel ?"
"Easy .....to be  hard.....easy to be cold"
Â
"Except for people ....who care ....about strangers ...."
"For people who care about social injustice ....."
"Do you only care ....about the bleeding crowd ?"
"How about a needy friend ?...we all need a friend"
Â
Morning y'all and thank you
Â
sounds like meth was involved, seems to be related in Oregon investigations of this nature
What strikes me is the amount of effort it takes to torture this boy was more than it would have taken to take care of him.
Â
I don't understand how people can have this at home, and function as people? How did these monsters pass as people?
Â
Things who do this to children should just be put down... I know some of you say that is harsh and quick to judgement on my part but my heart BROKE just reading the headline of this story... it took me TWO days to click it because I knew I would be so angry. Â I will never understand why and how a human could do this.
@dandalion I agree, Dandalion.  I don't fear death, and don't fear what comes next, so maybe that makes it easy for me.  These people are no more useful than a weed that puts out shoots and just becomes an infestation.
Well, for what it's worth, when these folks get inside prison, I suspect they will wish somebody had just put a bullet in their heads. Despite being convicts, the vast majority of prisoners are parents, and women are especially hard on fellow females who've been convicted of child abuse. I'll be surprised if they both come out alive.
@Mick Wagner You talk as if people in prison get killed on the regular. Man you are dumb.
@on shing dao  @Mick Wagner Man, you are dumb?  You maybe should have left off that comment.  The first sentence was worth pointing out, and then you had to go and get rude.
Â
And while you are correct, the chances are good that this guy is going to be gang raped for the rest of his miserable life. Â Me .. I favor them being imprisoned until death. Â And I favor them living long, miserable lives. Â
 @Mick Wagner I hope you are right...Â
That poor boy will likely never recover completely, physically or mentally. His parents deserve to spend the rest of their lives kneeling on the floor with their feet off the ground and their hands behind their heads, and only eating soup or cereal occasionally. Monsters!
@QuandoQuandoQuando Why? Their punishment techniques pass the KATU test.
Yea for the security guard who was very well aware of the teen. He knew something was off, and reported it. That's watching out for people. If it weren't for him, these people (can't even call them parents) would have never had their day in court.Â
Â
BTW - the kid was clean. He cleaned the bathroom, yet the rest of the house was rank. Way to go, Mitch!
Step parent, at best, and incubator. Neither one of these sick pukes deserve the titles of 'mom' or 'dad'.Â
Â
I'm a strong proponent of the judicial process, and on the fence about the application of the death penalty in most cases... but, if there's ever been a more deserving couple of that sentence, I can't recall them.Â
Â
Only, the application I'd come up with would be considered decidely 'cruel and unusual'. Visit upon them the exact treatment they visited upon the young man until they die.Â
Â
The disgusting depravity of some twisted people just sickens me.Â
@MarkKpic I prefer that this couple be imprisoned for the rest of their lives, and am in favor of making sure they are sent to prisons that will assure that they are miserable for the entire time.  I'm also okay with allowing them to put bullets through their own brains.  In fact, I do wish we could just hand them pills ... here.  Bite this and your misery will go away.  Or ... let me introduce you to your cell mates ...

@Caspertoo I'm against the death penalty because of the way it works at this time, but  I wish that we could instead just offer them the ability to go to sleep and never wake up (here, take this little pill and your miserable life will end) ... or the alternative is to introduce you to your new lifetime cell mates.
Wow, execute these sick fucks.
I am trying to figure out the date of the original story.(Strange story, no matter the date.)
Â
My best guess is this youngster has been malnourished for more than the 4 or 5 years prior to him turning 18. Most children are beginning the "tooth exchange" period by age 6 and mostly complete by age 12. He still had his baby teeth? His height and weight are slight but close to in proportion ... 5'1" and near 90 pounds. Certainly not normal for an 18 year old boy ...
Â
He attended school until about the time his younger sisters started school. One would think both his sisters and the public school would think something was wrong. I am also curious how his sisters were kept quiet.
@Cindy B. Interesting thoughts and good points Cindy. I was wondering about the baby teeth myself.
So awful... How does something like this go undiscovered for so long? When we were kids they actually made sure kids attended school. I can't understand how the sisters didn't know this wasn't right and tell someone, either.
They should get a year for every day this boy was held prisoner.
I suspect that if I were raised in a household where someone was screaming and crying and my parents weren't fixing it ... that I would perhaps not have the temerity to tell someone. Â There would be a sense of insecurity that might really be hard to deal with. Â I'd never really be sure what act of mine might mean I'd be next to be screaming for food?
@Lips I think they should get attempted murder charges filed against them and I agree with you about sentencing.
Obviously this Step-"Dad" is a horrible excuse for a human being let alone a "Dad". He claims he fed the boy 3 times per day, the same thing the family was eating. If that is true then it was the amount that was not the same. Must have been about a teaspoon of whatever since the young man has not grown in body nor his teeth. This abuse(the locked in the bathroom) obviously is not the scope of the story because baby teeth should have been gone for many years.
Â
The very fact that "Mama" allowed this treatment of her child is just hard for me to understand. Would not have happened at MY house if I had to accept going to prison for murdering the SOB!
Some people should be barred from having children!
That is pure EVIL. Those "parents" dont deserve to be alive. Stories like this are so disheartening, they make me feel sick. I hope they are put in prison for a long long time, but with how screwed up the criminal justice system is, they will both probably serve a few months and get probation. It's frustrating and infuriating.
Dude... those "parents" need some serious alone time with like Charles Manson and a box cutter.
:(
Â
How about "an eye for an eye" for the so called adults, and ALOT of prayers for the children??!! There is NO
excuse for the EVIL that transpired here!!! May they burn in hell for what they did to these children!! I have NO
empathy for these evil doers!!!!
I am horrified by this story. I hope he has some sort of happy life ahead of him - it will be a tough road to move beyond that situation. I can't imagine what they told the girls to make them not go to someone for help.
@Somonecaresaboutsomething Any life after the one he was forced to live has to be a lot better! Here is wishing him all the healing and joy and freedom for the rest of his life!
It is seeming like latent passive-aggressive behavior may be a result of force fed  feminazism encouraging mothers to do these terrible things to their boy-children.
@archon312 Put down whatever you are smoking and walk away from the computer. Come back if and when you get sobered up.
@archon312 It is seeming like you are a tad weird.  Mom marries, step dad doesn't like boy, Mom goes along with  him (God only knows why!)  nothing in there about Force Fed Feminism or whatever the hell you are trying to say....very sick damaged people.  I'd be interested in learning about how They were parented...
@archon312 What are you talking about?
I hope they like their "6 feet by 8 feet " CELL. Nevermind a rope is cheaper.
This is so sickening. I think the parents should be sentenced to the same treatment the boy received for the remainder of their days. I hope this young man will get the help required to survive his childhood and live a better life. I hope the girls are put into a home that's safe and loving.Â
What is going on with people? Are people losing all since of Morals? This is what the 2nd story in less then 2 months time of parents locking up kids?
@lee986321 Ya gotta figure that horrifyingly, there are yet MORE of these cases out there with kids either suffering and tortured/starved...or already dead and disposed of....even here in the NW. Time for people to be more nosy about their neighbors, it seems.
I read your comment & I couldn't agree more! When I was growing up my mother was going through some problems, and she became abusive to us kids-as far as slapping & hitting us w/whatever she could find (brooms, hangers, etc). We had a police officer right next door and he turned the other way! If someone is not mentally capable of taking care of their child the public should absolutely step in.
My heart broke for this boy, his abuse was much more severe I know. Abuse at any level can turn into murder though-so your comment just bought on a huge "amen" with me!
"The entire house was dirty and smelled bad, the detectives said, but the bathroom where Mitch Comer stayed was sparkling clean. The teen said he used to clean it because he had nothing else to do, Shelton said."
Â
This is so pathetic. The kid locked in a bathroom and all he has left is to clean it.
Â
The parents need to be locked in the same bathroom and fed the same food the kid was feed.
Â
I can only hope that this kid gets what he needs to catch up with life and goes on to live a good life. I know when he die he will go to heaven cause he has done his time in hell.
