Friends baffled by police killing of naked college student

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Friends of a University of South Alabama student are questioning his fatal shooting by a campus police officer.
Colgan Meanor says 18-year-old Gil Collar of Wetumpka was an outgoing athlete who loved wrestling in high school. She says she's shocked over his killing by an officer outside the university police department early Saturday.
Another friend of Collar, Tyler Kendrick, says the officer shouldn't have drawn his weapon on an unarmed person.
School officials say the student ignored repeated commands to stop. The school says Collar was nude and acting erratically when he confronted the officer.
The officer is on paid leave, and an autopsy will determine if drugs or alcohol were involved.
Campus officials say the confrontation was recorded by security cameras.

F&*K the police!!! Never EVER call the them! The police kill people.
Your "reason" apparently has not yet reached the "critical" stage!
Aren't campus policemen just rent-a-cops with guns?
For the uninformed, and just generally clueless such as iamtroglodite, here is the story of Deputy Sheriff Richard Herzog
Â

Â
"A veteran King County sheriffâs deputy was killed yesterday when a nude and highly agitated man whoâd been running in traffic and pounding on cars took the officerâs gun and shot him repeatedly outside an apartment complex here.
The deputyâs name was not officially released last night because authorities were still contacting relatives. Officials said he had been with the department as long as eight years and was retired from the military. He was in his mid- to late 40s, married and had an 18-year-old daughter."
Â
Â
I love the "shoot him in the pinky toe like i saw on NCIS last week" armchair quarterbacking here. SO completely stupid. Youre talking about making a split second decision in a potentially life or death situation. Officer Herzog hesitated the way you want, pepper sprayed the guy, and his wife and daughter got to bury him a week later. You have no idea how this would have ended up for this officer had this naked kid gotten to him. I for one am glad we never have to find out.
This is unacceptable to shoot and kill someone naked, knowing they are on drugs. Unless he was about to harm someone....not enough facts to tell in this report as usual....
@Glenn Pierce How exactly does the cop know he is on drugs? And do people on drugs not attack and kill people? Be serious.
"Another friend of Collar, Tyler Kendrick, says the officer shouldn't have drawn his weapon on an unarmed person."
Â
I have to agree with that. He was naked. Not likely he was hiding a gun or knife anywhere. If the kid was hurting someone or was attacking the officer then that would be a different story.
Â
That being said why was this kid out there naked, acting weird and not following police commands? The drug screen will tell us more I am sure.
The story above also indicates the incident was caught on surveillance cameras, so perhaps the whole event will eventually be analyzed?Â
 @jpkÂ
The video, if it's clear enough, will give us an idea if this was a justified shooting or not.
Agreed!
 @iamtroglodite   @jpkÂ
Â
If the guy was 240 pounds of solid muscle and beating up on a 130 pound female cop then naked or not she would be justified in shooting him.
Â
I had a 300 pound woman beating the crap out of me and outweighed me by almost double. Thankfully backup arrived and took over the situation while I went to the hospital with a cracked rib and broken clavicle. I feared for my life.
Â
Shooting someone in the leg is not taught to anyone and has little chance of success. Shot for the largest area which is center mass. It's clear you have never shot a gun in your life. If you had you would know that hitting a moving leg within 20 feet would be a very lucky shot. And even if they could shoot at the leg it could still be a fatal shot. I have seen many people die from upper leg wounds.
Â
You have been in your cave way too long.
Â
Never say never.
@RalphCramden @jpk At the risk of pissing you, him, her, them? off, killing an unarmed naked guy is NOT justified in any way. You wack him with your flashlight or the butt of your gun, or at worst shoot him in the leg at least a couple times, then if he still keeps comming, well then I guess you have no choice. I have been shot 3 times, once in the thigh, trust me when I say: IT DOES GET YOUR ATTENTION! The only reason I kept going was because I was half way out the window with my pants half off so fell out the rest of the way. P.S. : Make sure she is not married if she invites you home!
The officer will probably be given a raise & promotion. More than likely they'll say he was high on PCP or something to justify the shooting.
@Jamie The officer involved should move to Portland; he'd fit right in.
Don't they have access to non-lethal means to subdue the suspect?
@randomdude Yes, but then you leave them alive to sue.  Clearly against policy.
The answer is simple, We live in a fascist police state and the terrorists in uniform will not hessitate to kill you, and they wont get in trouble because in a police state there is no justice for the citizens, only brutality and control.
@!!! If what you believe is true, why are you still free? You have no clue as to what a fascist police state really is. All you spew is hateful rhetoric. Have you ever gone on a ride-along to see what is really accomplished? Â
@jpk Free? You mean having all online activity monitored, drones flying miles above watching what you're doing, Police & FBI harassing those that take pictures of refineries and other land marks etc. Where does this freedom end?
Â
I have been on ride-alongs and the police deal with insane crap on a daily basis. Did you know you have to sign up for those ride-alongs and they route calls to other officers based on a perceived danger level.. so basically a civilian would never be sitting in a squad car during a officer involved shooting.
@BarbWire DHS uses drones for "public safety", I only wish I was as numb and apathetic to what is happening in this country as you are.
@jpk That is cool, I can't imagine what it would be like to be a police officer, I know that I wouldn't be able to keep a cool head in many of the situations that those in LE have to deal with.
Â
Thank you for serving your community and doing what many of  those in the community will not step up to the plate and do.  The only thing that some on here are capable of is playing  "armchair quarterback"  thinking  they know all of the answers, I would really like to see how they would respond in a situation that is escalating, maybe give the person a great big, feel good hug? lolÂ
Â
I have seen this in regards to the military but I think it is fitting for LE as well,Â
Â
"If you can't stand behind them, then stand in front of them"
I have had many people along with me on ride-alongs during my 35 years of LE experience, thank you!
@Jamie  @jpk I think you need to ask your doctor to increase your medication, you seem to be a bit paranoid, maybe next time you go "on a ride along" they can send you out on a dangerous call where there will be a shooting, maybe that will make you happy. Â
