Ind. man with 47 guns arrested after school threat
CEDAR LAKE, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana man who allegedly threatened to "kill as many people as he could" at an elementary school near his home was arrested by officers who later found 47 guns and ammunition hidden throughout his home.
Von. I. Meyer, 60, of Cedar Lake, was arrested Saturday after prosecutors filed formal charges of felony intimidation, domestic battery and resisting law enforcement against him. He was being held Sunday without bond at the Lake County Jail, pending an initial hearing on the charges, police said in a statement.
Cedar Lake Police officers were called to Meyer's home early Friday after he allegedly threatened to set his wife on fire once she fell asleep, the statement said.
Meyer also threatened to enter nearby Jane Ball Elementary School "and kill as many people as he could before police could stop him," the statement said. Meyer's home is less than 1,000 feet from the school and linked to it by trails and paths through a wooded area, police said.
Police said in the statement that they notified school officials and boosted security at all area schools Friday - the same day 26 people, including 20 students, were shot and killed at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
On Saturday, officers served warrants at Meyer's home and arrested him. The statement said police had learned that Meyer kept many weapons in his older, two-story home and "is a known member of the Invaders Motorcycle Gang."
Officers searched the home, finding 47 guns and ammunition worth more than $100,000 hidden throughout the home. Many of the weapons were collector's guns.
Cedar Lake is about 45 miles southeast of Chicago.
A dispatcher with Cedar Lake Police said that the police chief was not available for interviews until Monday.
Lake County police spokeswoman Patti Van Til said Sunday that a SWAT team from the department assisted in serving Saturday's warrants.

Anytime we have one of these losers even mention harming one hair on the head of a child we should take every gun they have and make sure they never lay their hands on guns again.. Who does this ?
And the number of guns is really not an important thing. How many can he carry and use at once? Including the ammo?
Sensationalism.
Believe it or not but sometimes people talk like this because they WANT to go to jail.
Â
Wonder what the security is like at this school. Probably non existent like pretty much every public school in the nation.
Sexual pedators and child abusers have to be "branded " for life. Let's start doing it with these types of people too.
Just make sure he gets at least one felony conviction so that he will not get his weapons back.
@WendyTeagarden Just FYI. felons can legally purchase firearms in Oregon.
 @oh4FS  @WendyTeagarden is that a Fact?
@oh4FS  @WendyTeagarden Certain kinds of felons.
@oh4FS You can change that law.
@WendyTeagarden The legislature is owned by the NRA.
It's the ones who don't tell anyone that we need to be concerned about.
Well, now that they have a fresh one that is nuttier than squirrel sh-it maybe they can pick his brain apart, find out what makes him tick, and maybe be able to recognise when one of these pos's are ready to go f-uk-buggy and kill 20 people!
Hopefully, they'll also do an extensive mental evaluation, because it sure sounds like this guy has the potential for doing some serious damage..! Â Â Like stoneloc, I think this guy should be off the street - permanently; preferably in a well-secured mental hospital... That would provide a chance for him to get some help, but ALSO protect his family and the public from the effects of whatever mental disorder he seems to be suffering from.. Â Â
We need to act PROACTIVELY with these people, rather than waiting until they've gone completely over the edge and taken out their family and/or innocent people at a school, shopping mall, or wherever. Â Â
PC and rose-colored glasses aren't working, folks... it's time to get common sense back into the equation.
If it's really "for the kids", then let's start doing things that will help to actually protect them, along with the innocent adults... Â
This guy needs to be locked up for LIFE! Â This is how we should deal with these people, and then never talk about them again!
