NYC subway shoving suspect: I was having a bad day
NEW YORK (AP) - A disturbed woman accused of shoving a man in front of a New York City subway train to his death last month says she did it because she was having a bad day.
Erika Menendez spoke to The New York Post on Friday at the city jail where she is awaiting trial in the killing.
Menendez tells the newspaper her "mind was just racing" the day of the attack.
She says, "I was homeless. I was hungry. I was fighting with my boyfriend. He came running up the stairs, and I just got up and pushed him."
Menendez says she picked her victim because of his ethnicity.
Slain 46-year-old Indian immigrant Sunando Sen was Hindu. Menendez says she has "been beating up Muslims and Hindus for a long time."

Blame it on the train. Obama must do something about this senseless train violence! I'm calling for a train ban, and limit existing trains to 10 cars.
boyfriend or drug buddy, aaah they're basically one in the same these days. based on what she herself said she has absolutely no not guilty by reason of insanity defense.
Another sick and twisted member of society. And she didn't even use a gun. How about that. Disturbed people will always find a way. Get a clue people and stop blaming innatemat objects for crimes.
Jeez, talk about a lame-a $ $ excuse from a racist. Having a 'bad day.' Unfortunately, the lawyers are going to jump on this and run with it.Â
She'll probably get a slap-on-the-wrist 15 year sentence, but what she deserves is the needle.She knew what she was doing, saw and opportunity to take her attacks on Hindus and Muslims to the next level and she jumped on it.
She knew exactly what she was doing. She'll plead insanity and be pampered for the rest of her life.
jpk the media WAS all over it anyway, where have YOU been?? Â She should be charged with a hate crime but she is listed as disturbed, so who knows what she will ultimately be charged with. Â But she won't be homeless Or hungry doing time...
Now, what would have happened if she had used a firearm, instead of a "shove"? I'm sure the media would have been all over that. Once again, it's the person not the weapon used! Can't anyone get that?
 @jpk I think most people understand your point, but it sounds like you're getting frustrated because so many people disagree with it. That's not too difficult to understand, is it?

It's hard to imagine the thoughts (or lack of) that lead a person to push someone in front of a train, and actually think it's a-okay to do so.
If I killed someone every time I had a bad day, well...

That's why I said rot in state custody. We, as a society don't execute the crimminaly insane. In her case I don't care if she is in the gray bar hotel, or behind multiple locked doors at a mental institution for the rest of her days. She is a danger to society in general, but only "if she has a bad day"...
A pretty poor excuse for killing someone! With a list of alleged qualifiers for acting this way? Betcha she will receive mental health treatment and never see criminal justice resolution in court. And yes, this was a hate crime as she herself stated. Defense attorneys will have a field day with this one!
 @jpk NO she will do time...the Really insane ones (like Dahmer) got sentenced to jail, not mental health treatment.  Ever since Hinckly the truly mental cases have not been given justice, Or treatment.
She had a bad day so, she decided to beat someone up to feel better? In this case kill him?. She needs to rot in state custody.

I'd say, Ms Menendez, that your truly evil act will qualify you for at least a lifetime roof over your head and food, which should solve 2 of your problems... hope you're not counting on 5-Star housing or cuisine...

Listen, Menendez, I've had bad days too but I never assaulted anyone because of it.
My heart goes out to the family of the victim. I can't imagine the pain of losing a loved one in this manner and then to hear the reason for the tragic loss is because someone was having a bad day.
