Obama allies continue to push secret Romney video

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama's campaign allies continued to push out an unauthorized video of rival Mitt Romney dismissing the half of Americans who don't pay taxes, while the Republican nominee tried to turn the campaign disruption into a debate over the role of government in family finances.
"My course for the American economy will encourage private investment and personal freedom," Romney wrote in an op-ed essay in Wednesday's USA Today. "Instead of creating a web of dependency, I will pursue policies that grow our economy and lift Americans out of poverty."
It remains to be seen whether Romney's remarks at a private fundraiser, captured on hidden camera, would shake loose a dead heat that's persisted in the presidential campaign for months. An Associated Press-GfK poll out Wednesday shows an improvement in Obama's job approval rating and confidence in the country's direction, but the race is a dead heat among those most likely to vote.
Romney's USA Today essay avoided mention of the claim he makes on the video that nearly half of Americans believe they are victims and entitled to a range of government support and that as a candidate, he doesn't feel a need to worry about them.
Obama, appearing on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," rejected the notion that many Americans feel they are victims. "One thing I've learned as president is that you represent the entire country," he said.
A super political action committee supporting Obama was more pointed in the first television advertisement using Romney's words, released Wednesday morning and scheduled to run in battlegrounds Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.
The ad includes video of Romney saying, "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility." An announcer interjects, "And Mitt Romney will never convince us he's on our side."
With early and absentee voting beginning in a number of states, both sides hoped to lock in votes long before Election Day. The first of three presidential debates is scheduled for Oct. 3, and the two camps were looking to secure any edge as Obama's post-convention polling advantage seemed to be ebbing. Obama planned a rare full day at the White House Wednesday, including a private meeting with Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi; Romney scheduled a fundraiser in Atlanta and two appearances in Miami, including a candidate forum with the Spanish-language TV network Univision.
The Romney campaign continued to respond to the criticism of his fundraiser remarks Wednesday by pointing out videotaped comments Obama made in 1998 as evidence he favored government redistribution of wealth. An Illinois state senator at the time, Obama said he believes in redistribution "at least to a certain level to make sure everybody's got a shot."
"I know some believe that government should take from some to give to the others," Romney said in an interview Tuesday on Fox News Channel. "I think the president makes it clear in the tape that was released today that that's what he believes. I think that's an entirely foreign concept. I believe America was built on the principle of government caring for those in need, but getting out of the way and allowing free people to pursue their dreams."
But in his Fox interview, Romney continued to cast a segment of the country as unable to rally around his tax-cutting message.
"I recognize that those people who are not paying income tax are going to say, 'Gosh, this provision that Mitt keeps talking about lowering income taxes, that's not going to be real attractive to them,'" Romney said. "And those that are dependent upon government and those that think government's job is to redistribute, I'm not going to get them."
Some Republicans distanced themselves from their party's nominee.
"I disagree with Governor Romney's insinuation that 47 percent of Americans believe they are victims who must depend on the government for their care," Linda McMahon, the Republican candidate for a Senate seat in Connecticut, said in a statement posted to her website.
Sen. Scott Brown, facing a tough re-election race in heavily Democratic Massachusetts, said of Romney's comments, "That's not the way I view the world."
And New Mexico's Republican governor, Susana Martinez, noted in reaction to Romney's remarks that many in New Mexico live at or below the poverty level, and "that safety net is a good thing."
On Wednesday, the Romney campaign released two television ads accusing the Obama administration of conducting a "war on coal." The ads come one day after Virginia-based Alpha Natural Resources disclosed that it is closing mines in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and eliminating 1,200 jobs. Alpha CEO Kevin Crutchfield blamed the shutdowns, in part, on "a regulatory environment that's aggressively aimed at constraining the use of coal."

Well it looks like we've got Hitler and Stalin running for president again, this happens every four years
All of this spin is so reminiscent of the 2008 campaign. The media took anything that McCain said, and did, to the extreme, just to make him look bad, or worse, which ever, and it worked. The media wants obama as president, and they are going to insure that it happens, by realeasing any bad press (even if they have to make it up themselves) they can find on the opponent. Everyone should be very afraid of the mainstream media. They are the ones that are reporting stories, and everyone is basing their oppinions due to the media reports. In the past week, I have seen numerous reports on just how bad Romney is, however, NOTHING on obama. Either way. Even when obama SHOULD have been blasted on how he was handling the midddle east, really nothing was said. Well, alot was said, because Romney had a statement that he made, and they lambasted him, to deflect any criticism of obama. And it worked. The worse Romney looks, the better obama looks. Ask yourself why does the mainstream media want obama in the whithouse so bad, that it is blatently obvious that they are biased. Why do we allow the media to form our oppinion of one candidate or another? I truly think we are sheep being led to slaughter by the media.
the media refuses to talk about O's failed policies, economic and foriegn. This is the real talking points as it will drasticaly effect ALL Americans.
From the onion news, a sarcastic look at society comedy news site. The irony is it's so close to the truth !

The headline goes....fiction so close it seems like fact..HA !

Romney Apologizes To Nation's 150 Million 'Starving, Filthy Beggars'

I'm still waiting for any comments to defend the "entitlement" basher iromney for getting 10 million in "entitlements for the FDIC....from my comment AND link below....still waiting ...kramr, kachina, kheb....well ????
@sargerator Thats fine, I'm still waiting for Obama to release his college transcripts. Or even acknowledge how he traveled to the middle east. But those will never be answered by him
This was a clear leak to divert attention from the Libya issue which has taken even the mainstream media.... I can't believe that Romney's comments (which I believe to be true) are more important than the Middle East. The President sleeps soundly as his Ambassador goes missing and being murdered and then leaves to campaign while embassies are being attacked in the Middle East and you are worried about what Romney said four months ago? Really?
After all the shocking things about Obama, his "gods and guns" remark, being caught deriding Israel when he thought his mic was off, getting caught again telling the Russians he'll be more flexible after the elections, the snafu telling the police they "acted stupidly", and not to mention sitting in a racist anti-Semitic church for 20 years, we're supposed to be all up in arms over Romney saying this?...,Obamaâs deliberate snubbing of Benjamin Netanyahu,⦠but if you can't see how corrupt and in the tank for Obama the media is, then you are either blind or willfully ignorant.
Â
It started with the strawberries rightcapt. queeg ?
@KHEB My thoughts exactly!
Roseanne Barr for President.!!!
Ah, entitlements.
Â
Willard has $102 million in his IRA. At the time he was working for Bain, yearly contributions were capped at $2000 - though for people in his situation the cap was $30,000. Still, how did it grow to $102 million. Willard won't say.
Â
Why the special treatment for Willard's IRA? Well, he feels he's entitled to it.
@Max Quinn If Romney did anything illegal, he'd be indicted or subpoenaed by now.  Sounds like you are either envious of his $$ or feel entitled to some of it.
@Hellbilly The legality is the point - the law gives special treatment to Willard so that he can have a massive share of his wealth shielded from taxation.
@Hellbilly @Max Quinn So your opinion about the legality of such was???
I gave up trying to do my own taxes, because I get more back and pay less if I have someone else figure it out - and I am not "rich".
Yet you are worked like a tool to do their bidding...
Doesn't pay much right..???
Â
Â
Â
@Max Quinn Our current tax system is so complex, it takes a good tax attorney or accountant to figure it out.  I gave up trying to do my own taxes, because I get more back and pay less if I have someone else figure it out - and I am not "rich".
Â
IMHO We need a simple flat tax / consumption based tax (fairtax.org) .
@Max Quinn Sounds like smart investing to me. And you sir, sound like a whiner. But something I would like to know is, how did Obama finance his education? How did he support himself after college, when he was a lowly, low paid community organizer? Why does he put more time into campaigning, sports, socializing than he has ever put into leading this country? He is part of the 1%, but seems quite bitter at not being nearly as wealthy or successful as Mitt Romney, maybe because he didn't work nearly as hard, make as many sacrifices? Obama lacks integrity, a good work ethic and the experience to qualify for a high paying job unless he becomes a politician. there you have it. Just convince enough people that you are the one, the answer, then abdicate your job to the cronies who helped get you elected.Â
It was in a TAX-DEFERED IRA....jeeeze do some reading on those. For instance...THE LIMITS. It would be impossible to acrue that much under the laws that you and I abide by...jeeeeze, don't be a numskull !
@Kachina  @Max Maybe you missed the part about this all being in a tax-deferred IRA.
Â
Here, take a look at what the Marxists at Bloomberg News have to say: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-07-15/the-secret-behind-romney-s-magical-ira.html
Â
Obama supported himself by living a lifestyle that fit his income. There's no shortage of people in low-paying jobs and dealing with college loans. You don't like the guy - understood. You needn't be so whiny about it, though.
Â
Â
So, the entitlement bashers, what about this guy and his feelings of "entitlement" ...hmmm clue , his first name rhymes with TWIT ! Wake up people , they're pathological liars !
Â
"Because Bain & Company's odd agreements with the bank would allow the firm to pay out bonuses before creditors could grab its assets, the Bain people (led by Mr Romney) were holding all the cards. Indeed, Mr Romney made good on his threat: senior executives at Bain & Company did start getting big bonuses as the negotiations were ongoing in the early 1990s. In the end, says Mr Dickinson, "The FDIC agreed to accept nearly $5 million in cash to retire $15 million in Bain's debtâan immediate government bailout of $10 million."
Â
Read the whole story and this is the economist, hardly liberal media ...thats for kramr, timmburr and the like who claim , "media bias". And frankly I don't know how you could approach this as bias, it's history !
http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2012/08/mitt-romney-and-bain-company
@sargerator Yes, let's talk about entitlements.
Â
http://washingtonexaminer.com/crs-report-number-of-able-bodied-adults-on-food-stamps-doubled-after-obama-suspended-work-requirement/article/2508430#.UFn2oa7Nlfv
Â
Â
@TimBurr @sargerator Not more of that hack bias site again??
Dude you really need to read the real news or you will soon read that the sky is falling...
@sargerator The victims are out in force.
That is still a political  spin on business practices that have been going on for centuries. Executives usually get bonuses while the work bees get virtually nothing . Is that Illegal , no . Wrong , no as these bonus are negotiated into contracts. The ONLY reason that Romneyâs being attacked on this and his taxes is for POLITICAL GAIN by the Obaminator and the Democratic party. If you donât like big business and executive bonuses, donât buy gas, oil, potatoes ,ice cream, or donuts because you are contributing to those bonuses.Â
Â
As for "entitlements". If you are sick injured , mentally handicapped, retraining to be a public asset is some form , yes , state governments need to step up and handle that . Is it really the job of the feds  , not really. There is nothing to the constitution that requires that(not that I know of, that is . I am sure you are going to try to steamroll me on that).Â
As for those who feel that they are âentitledâ to assistance just because they are there. No that does not fly. If you are here illegally , you are âentitledâ to nothing other than a ride back across the border .
Â
I am really looking forward to see how the Ombaminator handles ( or does not handle) a real debate. This time he will be sitting in the chair having to answer for his failures as president. In any case. Mitt was right in the content of what he said but he could have stated in a better fashion.
Â
Â
"poor people need to pay more, rich people need to pay less" ? Give e a break. Why are you liberals always blaming "the rich" for societies problems? Some of thes " Rich " people  pay more taxes in a year than I will pay in a life time . For me 15% of 1000 is 150 bucks. For the "rich" , 15% of 10,000,000 is 1,500,000 and so on. You want fair taxes, do away with the income tax , estate tax, divdend tax , Gas Guzzler tax and all the rest of those sutpid taxes that the liberals have come up with and put in place a sales tax will be the fairest that way everybody pays equally with no loopholes and no writeoffs .
Â
At this point I will be voting for anyone that has an R for a party. We need to get this country back on top and not securing borders and continuing a welfare state will not do it or we will follow the path of Greece , Spain , Itlay and other counties in Euorpe that did the same socialist things the Obaminator is trying to do.
@Civ ..that is if the biased questioners, and all 3 debates are headed by the liberal press, asks the hard question...I don't think they will so the debates may well be sloppy and slanted.  The media, main-stream, most certainly are doing all they can do to discredit Romney while licking the booty of Obama...we'll see I guess...
Entitlement is a huge problem all over the world. Americans used to be much better at self-sufficiency, but now rapidly catching up to Greece, Spain, France, etc.
1. Feeling of entitlements breeds feelings of entitlements, spreads rapidly through communities and social organizations and eats away from economy and more importantly eats away from people's freedom, ambitions and abilities.
2. It is highly immoral and no different than theft when 97% of voters decide what to do with the money of the other 3%. The truth is that the only moral system is a flat rate tax.
iromney domestic policy, "poor people need to pay more, rich people need to pay less"
Â
iromney on foreign policy, "just kick the ball down the field and hope it stays there"
Â
So he's finally coming out with his policies.....D'OH !
@sargerator Obama domestic policy, tax the rich and increase the population of the poor.
Obama foreign policy, kill a few terrorists, apologize to them for it, and ignore the middle east when they start to attack our embassies and kill Americans, continue campaigning.
There is no doubt there is a HUGE entitlement mentality in this country. Â
Â
People, mostly democRats, are obsessed with other peoples money - not earning their own.  It's about taking money they haven't earned from the "rich", which  they continually redefine.  They act like spoiled brat children, who have every toy imaginable and still are not happy, and are a constant pain in the ass.
Â
Â
Funny how I never see in the headlines "iromney allies" when they push a negative (or foot in mouth) news story about
about obama ??? hmmm...liberal media....as a goofy old guy said once, "there you go again" !
Iâm glad someone finally said it. This has been the elephant in the room for sometime now. This is where we as a nation are divided. In my opinion Romney was correct. The entitlement mentality which has taken a firm hold here in our country is gross. To say all folks who get government assistance play the victim is a pretty broad brush, but a good chunk of them do play the victim card any chance they get. Of course these people will never vote for anyone who threatens to take away the government gravy train, why would they. Some of those folks would much rather see the country sink into the finical abyss of hell to keep their government checks coming.
said the guy that sounds like he's claiming victim ! Ironic hey ?
@606  How does offshoring jobs lead people to be self sufficient? Should the unemployed pack up and move to India, Taiwan or China?
Absoloutley correct! It seems the liberals think that there is a never ending supply of people to tax (except them) and will chant their mantra until dooms day arrives! Obummers campaign will keep pushing this video to avoid his record and real facts about the economy, jobs, foreign policies, Obamacare, fast & furious, voter fraud. Gee, I could go on forever.
@Greg11 Itâs interesting that you started by pointing out how liberals like to tax, then move on to âreal factsâ, but conveniently ignore that weâve maintained the same level of federal income taxes for 11 years. You do that despite the fact that the Democrats had control of Congress and the Presidency for two years as many like to point out. Obama/Bush/Romney â not really all that different.
@Greg11 Oh I've heard of it, it doesn't cut enough, and if it had a honest chance of getting passed by both houses the Republicans would table it before it got that far. As for paying attention: Ryan is the deuce on this ticket, Romney has not been one to support even that level of cuts. Once elected Romney will look to insure his reelection by pandering to the entitled masses.
@Greg11 Yea mitt said it only applies to 47% of America...
You know the ones who said I earned that....
@JTesla Never heard about the Paul Ryan budget plan? I suggest you pay attention
@Greg11 No I cut spending, which neither party is willing to do, at least not to the level that is needed.
@JTesla So do you charge more when you earn less?
@Kachina Failed to mention? Didn't need to, because neither side has any desire to seriously reign in spending. Both sides have had their shots, nothing. Both major party candidates have made their plans, nothing that even comes close to the cuts we need.
@JTesla You failed to mention that this administration has failed to reign in the spending when the coffers start to run low. As the tax base starts to shrink due to unemployment, and the retirement of baby boomers, there are less people paying taxes, and more people needing help. Less givers, more takers, and Obama's only answer to this is to print more money, and to tax the rich. He was grossly unqualified to deal with economic issues, and failed to bring the most qualified economists into his cabinet. why would you not surround yourself with the best people? It's either incompetece, ignorance or a deeper agenda. But continuing on this path with this president is going to suicide of the country.
More liberal bias of the news......
Ya, that headline screams , "liberal bias news" ....WTW ??
Sounds like Mittens will be on his second 'Apology Tour' in as many weeks. Wow. And he wants to be President? By early November he can head off to the Cayman Islands to spend more time with his money and the country will be better off.
What is robme going to do today? Whst is lyngyryen going to say today. I can't wait. I'm on pins and needles waiting, waiting, enter the clowns!Â
So was it legal to be using this hidden camera in this particular location? Shouldn't someone be going to jail? Carter Mother Jones Jarrett?

@TimBurr this is typical DNC strategy. Even in local elections, someone from the DNC or their minions are taping candidate forums, looking for something, anything they can turn around and use against their opponent. Happens all the time. When you can't stand on your record or bring ideas to the table, you resort to these tactics and your whole campaign becomes about attacking and avoiding the issues.Â
MORE REGULATIONS screamed the conservative ...MORE ! What about , you know, freedom and liberty ??
@sargerator The ends justify the means screams the liberal "progressive."
