Get your rebate - even if you usually don't file tax returns

By Shellie Bailey-Shah

If you normally file a tax return, the following information does not apply to you. You'll get your rebate or economic stimulus check without doing anything more than sending in your 2007 federal tax return.

But if you don't typically file, you must do it this year in order to get the federal rebate.

So here's how you do it.

  • First, you need to pick up the correct form. It's a 1040A.
  • Second, write at the top of the form "economic stimulus" in big bold letters.
  • Next, fill out your personal information, including your name, social security number and address.
  • Then drop down to the income section.

"If they have at least $3,000 in social security benefits or $3,000 in wages, and maybe they don't normally even need to file, they would qualify for the rebate," said Tracey Gates of the Oregon Association of Tax Consultants.

So you need to list that income:

  • Wages go under section 7
  • Social security benefits under 14A
  • There's also a spot for interest, dividends and pensions

The last step is to sign the bottom of the form and date it.

If you are married, file a joint return with both names and a combined income.

"If they file by April 15, they'll be in the first group that is issued in May," Gates said.

How big will the check be?

  • For single filers - $300
  • For a married couple - $600.

So it's definitely worth filing on the forms.
