Don't be fooled by this IRS tax refund scam
By Angelica Thornton and KATU Web StaffPORTLAND, Ore. - If you're waiting for a check from the IRS, we have a warning for you. There's a new scam that could end up costing you way more than that refund. It's actually an old scam but it's popping up in lots of e-mail boxes this week. Darla Ross is a computer-savvy bookkeeper but even she thought this was pretty slick. "It tells you everything the IRS tells you, so it looks very legitimate," she said. An e-mail she received told her the IRS needed more information to process her refund and immediately linked her to a Web site that looked a lot like the IRS Web site. A few more clicks led her to a screen asking her for her credit card number, credit card expiration and other personal information. Ross became suspicious and contacted KATU. We called the IRS and were told the e-mail is a scam. Senior Tax Specialist Kathy Howell said IRS officials will never ask for that information and will never send you an unsolicited e-mail. If they need more information, you will get a letter. Meanwhile, Darla Ross is anxiously awaiting her refund and hoping that other people are just as cautious as she is. "I knew it was a scam," she said. "I just feel sorry for all the people who are going to fill it out thinking this is how they're going to get their refunds this year." |
