PORTLAND, Ore. - Walking down the aisle has never been cheap but in today's new economy, brides and grooms are trying to tighten the purse strings.

According to The Wedding Report Web site, the average cost of a wedding last year did drop by 24 percent but it is still $21,814. That's a lot of dough but there are many ways you can save money on your wedding.

Local bride Natalie Hall pulled off a beautiful wedding with 200 guests for $7,500, for example.  Here are her tips:

  • Ask people you know for help.  Do they know someone who can get you a deal on catering? Photography? Flowers?
  • When buying fabric to make bridesmaids' dresses, choose chiffon or other less expensive fabrics over silk.  Ask for a discount for buying fabric in bolts.
  • Make your own invitations.  Craft stores will let you us their supplies for free.
  • Buy flowers at wholesale prices.  Then arrange them yourself.
  • Buy your cake and food from the same vendor to reduce delivery charges.  Ask for an additional discount.
  • Do appetizers instead of a full-course meal.
  • Collect coupons from the Portland Bridal Show, Clipper Magazine and mailers.
  • Have the wedding and reception at the same location.  Move flowers from one space to the other.
  • Use white sheets instead of table linens.  Buy your own napkins instead of renting them.

Krysta McLaughlin, who owns Charlotte's Bridal Shop, said some cost conscious brides are even opting for bridesmaid's dresses instead of traditional gowns.  Here are her tips:

  • Look for a dress with less beading, less detail and a smaller train to save money.
  • Choose chiffon or less expensive fabrics over silk.
  • Consider wearing a white bridesmaid's dress instead of a wedding gown.
  • Buy a gown on closeout for half the price.  Buy off the rack.
  • Opt for a smaller bridal party.
  • Plan ahead so that you don't have to pay extra for a rush order.

Julian Wilde, of Crown Ballroom Garden Court, said don't be afraid to have your reception on a weekday.  And you can save even more by planning one in off months.  Here are his tips:

  • Avoid Saturday weddings and receptions.  Book a Friday or Sunday at a discount.  Book during the week for a steep discount.
  • Book in January or February.
  • Don't be afraid to negotiate your price!
  • Scale back your guest list.  Invite 75 people instead of 200.
  • Host a bar for only 1 hour.  Or host a bar with only beer and wine.
  • Serve appetizers instead of a buffet or full dinner.  Stationary appetizers cost less than passed appetizers.
