Bizarre new sleep disorder on the rise: Sleep Texting

There are more than 80 different kinds of recognized sleep disorders. If untreated they can effect mood, memory and even concentration.

Today, technology has led to a "very modern" new sleep disorder - sleep texting, even shopping online, all while asleep.

At Johns Hopkins Hospital sleep expert Dr. Rachel Salas says it is a growing phenomenon and one that people prone to other sleep disorders are particularly susceptible to.

For Candy Gay, a paramedic, sleep texting has become a bad habit according to her friends, who receive bizarre messages. Her father Wayne has witnessed it firsthand.

"I will come in and see her texting and she will have it up in the air with her eyes closed," Wayne described.

For those who sleep while texting experts recommend seeing a sleep specialist, or even have a sleep study done. They also recommend staying on a consistent sleep schedule, going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day.
