Is it safe to eat that food? The Problem Solvers have answers

If you see food in your fridge past the date on the package, do you eat it or toss it out?

The Problem Solvers found answers for you on an app and website,, that could save you money and give you a little more peace of mind.
Amy Burns let the Problem Solvers into her kitchen at her home near Gladstone to look for out-of-date food in her cupboard.

"I'm a little nervous," said Burns. "I don't know what's in here."

She found canned tomatoes, onion soup mix and honey with dates from 2013.

She also found a soy ginger noodle meal kit dated October, 2008.

"I can't believe I have a box from 2008. That's very embarrassing!" said Burns.
Embarrassing, perhaps, but also helpful to show how Still Tasty works.

The site and app showed that the canned tomatoes from 2013 are still good. The site said the date is for quality, not safety.

The onion soup mix from last year is also edible, the Still Tasty said, along with the aged soy ginger meal kit.

"Still good, six years later!" said Burns.

The honey turned out to be the shocker.

"My guess is that it's going to say don't eat the honey after the expiration date," said Burns.

But Still Tasty showed that honey stays good forever.

"Whoo-hoo! Keeps indefinitely!" said Burns.

The Problem Solvers looked for other examples of past-due food in the KATU lunch room refrigerator, and found half-and-half and lunch meat from February, and yogurt from January.

You should use half-and-half only up to three or four days after the printed date, according to Still Tasty.

You should eat the meat up to one week after the date and the yogurt seven to ten days after the date, Still Tasty's site said.

Burns said she is not too worried about getting food dates wrong, but she thinks this information could help people who are wondering whether to eat or toss certain foods.

"That was useful for sure," said Burns. "And I think for a lot of people who really worry about that kind of stuff, it would be a huge, you know, huge mind-calming thing for them."

Still tasty's site said that food must be stored properly in order to be safe to eat. See the website for more details about how the storage and dates apply to your food and whether you should eat it.
