Facebook settles class-action lawsuit
PORTLAND, Ore. – Facebook may owe you money, thanks to a class-action lawsuit.
But don’t count on getting rich off the deal.
The $20 million settlement stems from Facebook using people’s names, photos, likenesses and identities in sponsored ads without their permission.
When the social networking site went public, many users demanded to know when they would get paid for all that sharing.
Facebook began notifying people that they owed them $10, but you may have deleted an email announcing it because it looks like spam. It comes from a sender called “Legalnotice@facebook.com.”
If your likeness or photo wasn’t used, you won’t get a dime.
As part of the settlement, Facebook denies any wrongdoing or liability.
I've used Facebook for several years now and most of the time it's a pain in the neck. I've connected with a cousin who last saw me when I was only 2....60 years ago :) So...between friends from school and now having a family again, it's been a good thing. However...it can be a nuisance with all the ads and "Likes" that come your way, which I just "hide". As with everything, you have to be careful. But it can be a useful and productive way to spend a couple of hours in the evening :) And I also got the lawsuit notice a couple of days ago...ignored it as I normally ignore all these kinds of things.
I don't think Facebook is the problem. Our youth, and even some older people, just don't have any inkling about life and the consequences of doing something stupid will bring. Threats to supervisors, teachers and other people , bragging about some crime they committed, etc. on the internet, doesn't really show much intelligence. Of course, Facebook and the internet does provide a way for cowards to express their feelings.Â
I took a look at FB with the idea of possibly using it, but then I couldn't figure out what the heck it would be good for... Â Since then, the more I hear and read about it, the happier I am that I've had nothing to do with it..! Â Â
@margay1 Well, I'm in touch with college friends, old band-mates, high school friends, elementary friends, the next door neighbor when I was 4, relatives across the country I might otherwise only talk to once a year, as well as fans, business clients, old teachers and professors. It's what you make of it, pretty much like e-mail, phone calls, and everything else anybody chooses to do. It's good for keeping in touch with people and given that some of the people I'm on it with are cops, sailors (deployed) and other responsible people, it's only dangerous if kids run away with it or people are stupid about what they put up there.
@Playanekes ~  Well, it sounds as though you have quite a wide network of people with whom you stay in contact... and you also sound like you're intelligent enough to know what should and should not be posted on an on-line social network.  So...for you, FB is probably a useful and enjoyable tool...
As always, if we all liked the very same things, it would be a pretty boring world..! Â :-)
@margay1 ........I have nothing to do with it either. Guess I'm not that lonely. And I really do think its dangerous !
Facebook is dangerous !
@Rob C 503 ~  I sure think that's true for a lot of people... especially teens, who don't fully understand what they're getting into; sometimes, until it's too late...
