How to avoid a moving nightmare

How to avoid a moving nightmare

We all hate to move, but what's going on in the industry takes moving from nuisance to nightmare.

The Problem Solvers are getting more and more complaints about this problem. KATU's Shellie Bailey-Shah says don't pack a single box until you know just who'll be picking it up. Click the "Play Video" button to watch this story.

Here's what to know to protect yourself from a nightmare move:

  • Only hire licensed, reputable movers. You can get a list on the state's department of transportation website.
  • Only hire companies after checking their complaint record with the state and the BBB.
  • Only hire a company that gives you an estimate after a physical inspection of your property – not over the phone or online.
  • Call your homeowner's insurance company before you move and ask about coverage for lost or damaged items.
