Preview: What you need to know when choosing a nursing home

PORTLAND, Ore. – Choosing a nursing home for your aging family members can be an agonizing decision. If you haven’t done it yourself, imagine the pressure of making sure your loved ones are placed in good hands.
“You aren't prepared for this,” explained Annalisa Dahlen, who had just a few days to find her father, Conny, a nursing home after he suffered his second stroke.
“Initially, I was happy with the skilled nursing center, but that was more of a veneer,” said Dahlen. After concerns about his care, Dahlen moved him three months later.
The KATU Problem Solvers recognize that lots of people in our area are going through similar experiences. That’s why we started looking at a new nursing home resource put together by the non-profit news organization ProPublica.
The database compiles all the government inspection reports regarding violations and fines for the past three years for nursing homes around the country.
KATU Problem Solver Shellie Bailey-Shah has been poring over the database to identify both the failing homes and the homes that shine in our area. Join her at 6 p.m. on KATU News as she looks at the steps you should take to find a nursing home, as well as other resources available for families.
Do some major research. Even the "known names" are not what they seem. You can be paying good money for what you think is good care, but they sham you on not taking care of your loved ones the way that even the doctor prescribed.Â
What is even more scary is unregulated Adult Foster Homes in Oregon. Beware Beware Beware, I have seen some and I wouldn't put an animal there.
Not in all cases. Do not use one brush to paint an entire situation, there ARE good homes out there.
@jasmin10Â Just like there *are* good daycare situations... but they're maybe 1 in 100, and they're at the expensive end of the spectrum. The best one can usually hope for, especially at the lower end of the price range, is that they're not getting physically or sexually abused, merely neglected.
