Vicki Christiansen received a "friend" request on Facebook. Eventually that "friend" tried to scam her out of money. It turned out a scammer had taken over her friend's identity.

GRESHAM, Ore. – Scammers have found a sneaky new way to get to you through Facebook.

They take over your friends' identities. Then they start chatting with you as your friend. And soon they're trying to trick you out of your money.

The scam is pretty elaborate. The scammers have to do a lot of work to get to you, but it is paying off for them. Vicki Christiansen sent them $500, and you can be sure there are more victims out there.

Christiansen got a "friend" request from someone she knew in Salem a few years back. She accepted.

Within a few days the friend told her she had won money in a Facebook promotion and saw Christiansen's name on the winner list, too.

She hooked Christiansen up with the Facebook prize administrator and the two of them went back and forth, convincing Christiansen that she had won and that she should send $3,000 for taxes and fees.

The best part: If Christiansen paid just $500 of it, her friend would front the rest using some of the prize money she had won.

Christiansen just wanted to help her friend as well as herself.

"I'm like, that could benefit me," she said. "She's willing to put up twenty-five hundred, I should be willing to put up what I can, you know?"

But it was fake.

Scammers had used her friend's name, pictures and information to replicate her friend's page.

Luckily, Christiansen figured it out and canceled the money transaction just in time.

So you will want to be wary of all new "friend" requests. Just checking out the pictures won't tell you if it's real or not.

Also, consider setting your Facebook page to private so that scammers have a harder time replicating your page.
