Tattoo typo? Grandson gets inked to honor grandma

MOLALLA, Ore. – When Quinten Wyland got a tattoo, he was trying to honor his grandmother, but he says he ended up with a very expensive and permanent mistake.
His grandmother, Grace, gave him strength and support before she passed away and so Wyland, a mixed martial arts fighter, decided to pay tribute by having her name tattooed on his forearm where every opponent could see it.
But it did not turn out the way he wanted it to.
From one angle, the whole name is backwards and from another, it is upside down and mismatched.
It's a mistake he says that is very hard to erase.
"It wouldn't be so bad if it was something else, I guess," Wyland says. "It'd still be really bad, but for my grandma's name, that's the worst."
Wyland says it all started when he went shopping for a tattoo in Oregon City and ran into a family acquaintance, tattoo artist James Langholz. Langholz had just gotten his license about a week before and offered a huge discount. Wyland would get his tattoo for about $40. He had expected to pay at least $100 more.
Wyland said Langholz's sketch looked fine.
"(It) said my grandma's name, 'Grace,' in cursive," he says.
But the tattoo is in an awkward spot on his arm and when Langholz put the sketch on him Wyland couldn't see what it actually said.
Wyland says he did not know there was a problem until he showed his new body art to a friend later that night.
"I was just completely embarrassed," he says.
Langholz says the tattoo is exactly what the customer wanted. He says Wyland approved the sketch on his arm before he tattooed.
"If he wants it that way then that's the way he gets it, because that's the way he likes it," says Langholz.
He disagrees that the tattoo doesn't say "Grace."
"It says G-r-a-c-e, you can't deny that," he says.
Langholz insists all the letters are right and the problem is not a tattoo error but buyer's remorse.
Wyland hopes to fix the tattoo mistake perhaps by his next fight. He believes it will cost at least $400 to get a cover-up tattoo and at least twice as much to remove it with a laser.
For now, he tries to wear long sleeves and wishes the tribute to his grandmother did not hurt so much.
"When it's, like, my grandma's name, it brings up a lot of memories and stuff. Not the way I wanted it to be," Wyland says.
He says he filed a complaint with the Oregon Health Licensing Agency, which oversees tattoo artists. The agency numbers show tattoo complaints have gone up about 300 percent over the last dozen years as more and more people get tattoos.
What to do:
The OHLA says you'll want to check to make sure your artist has a license. Don't just assume, however, that a license means they know what they're doing.
Take a look at their past work. Look closely at the stencil they put on your body before they tattoo and watch during the process. You could bring a friend if the tattoo is in a place you can't see well so you don't end up with a permanent mistake.
If you have a problem, contact the Problem Solvers. You can email them at problemsolvers@katu.com. You can also call them. The number is 503-736-3415.
I am a 30 year old woman who doesn't understand tattoos at all. Seems that everyone else my age loves them and thinks they are so cool because they have tats. They think they are soooo unique, yet almost everyone gets the same stupid tats. The Koi fish, the birds, the butterflies, lets not forget stars and hearts...the list goes on and on. Yes, some of them are cool, but it seems rare that there is a tattoo that actually looks good and is worth actually having put on your body permanently. The Tat in this story is just pathetic. Even if it was written right (which it's not) The letters look like a 10 year old had drawn them and the shading and lines are just way off. Its just the new thing these days to get all tatted up...I'm not falling for it!!
You get what you pay for, next time don't be cheap. Fix your ring worm problem too. Moron! KATU don't you have real stories anymore? This was just stupid. Well at least I know if I ever want a tat I wont go to that place EVER but really? this is news?? Get real.
Could be Karma <:::::::::::::::::!
We support everyone's right to express themselves through a tattoo. Â Check and double check the artwork if you are a buyer. Â Script is much harder than it looks. Â Never assume anything even if you've researched your artist and trust them...remember they are human. Â We've been helping people protect their body art with our Ink Armor sleeves since 2008: Â http://www.tat2x.com
BJ on the TV show M*A*S*H said it best "Why would you want something drawn on your body that you wouldn't hang on your wall"? or something to that extent.
Sitcom stuff makes news. Portlandia will have new material
This young man approved the tattoo, anyone that gets a tattoo has to o.k's it before it is put on permanent???? That is what he wanted??? I really don't think this was problem solver worthy............ I have work done by James and its great, I get complimented on my tat all the time.
@kid#6Â I think james is an idiot
if my grandson had this done for me i would be proud of him=they need to redo it for free for he,s grandma he love,s so=nice grandson i like him
""It says G-r-a-c-e, you can't deny that," he says."Â Why can't I? Since it doesn't say "Grace" I HAVE to deny that it does. GIve him his money back and, speaking of money, don't even consider going into the counterfeiting racket.
think both parties here need reading and writing lessons.
@Nuclear-XSays the one that did not capitalize the "T" or Put I in front of think..... Â Think you need writing lessons too.
Rule Number 1 NEVER get a tat from a new guy without seeing his work. Go to someplace were you have seen their work on people. this looks more like a prison tat. you get what you pay for.
I think as an artist and one just starting out he would maybe give some advice that this isn't going to look right or something. If it were that easy we would all do it. We go to professionals to have it turn out right. I agree it looks like a $40 tattoo, but if this artist wants to have a career I think he should correct it and make it look better. IF for anything job prospects. It looks like crap! Sorry this had to happen to someone with good intentions!
@DRB he,s a nice boy and as a grandma my self i think they should have to make this right and redo itÂ
@Sherry L Campbell @DRB A nice boy???? Google him and his mug shot comes up for possession of MDA,  Sherry, that is not a good boy!!!
@kid#6 @Sherry L Campbell @DRB hes a thug!!
Ya know...I saw the 'artist' interviewed last night...I would really like for him to show, with his finger, the letters making the name "Grace". He seemed so certain it said Grace...I just want him to show us where he sees it. Was the guy doped up or drunk when he did it???? Looks like it to me :(
@fracas It looked right on paper, before the "artist" turned it face down and traced it. Not that complicated, and I don't get why everyone is so confused. Has anyone seen a rubber stamp before??
@fracas It took me a while but I see it, it's backwards and upside down to the pic BUT if you ignore the fact that it's upside down, from left to right it is GRACE in terrible odd cursive. The real problem is, when you flip it over the right way it's backwards. Â
Lose lose....how do you mess that bad, I'll never know.
@deejm2112Â So you're saying that other than being backwards and upside down and in terrible cursive, it's a crappy tat, right? Â I tried looking at it with a mirror, but I got distracted when I saw the ringworm under what might be the 'G'.
@fracas I thought he looked fairly lit up too.
Ok, I am tattooed over 50% of my body.
#1 rule in tattooing is don't go with a cheap artist or a bro deal. You get what you pay for. It looks like a $40 tattoo to me. Next time proof read and make sure he did not apply the stencil backwards (which it is).
No compassion. You picked a poor tattoo artist and got a poor tattoo. $40 get you nothing in a tattoo shop. I put money down that his next tattoo experience will end the same way because he is too cheap to pay for real art.
@Poochie Itchy & Scratchy give your comment two thumbs up.
I think grandma would have appreciated a nice bouquet of flowers, or a nice plant more than ink.
@pdxd as a grandma my self flowers are so nice but what he did was from the heart and i think that is so sweet
He might want to get some fungal cream for his ringworm too....
"Besides Napoleon.....we both know I'm training to be a cage-fighter".
He should of gone to that teenage who recycled his ink
@tally  You're barely literate. Are you a tat artist too?
@badcat @tally Just drunk
@tally mee two. cheerz!Â
What a dumb@ss, next time pay attention. It was on his arm, he couldn't see it?  He had to have a friend tell him it was jacked up? I dont think this guy can read. Hhhmm mixed martial arts fighter from Molalla, this story sounds like its full of intelligent people.Â
@Richard Goezinyah The story did not say he was good at martial arts
@Richard Goezinyah One too many hits to the head maybe.
@haynizeoG drahciR It's ok, everyone he listens to, sounds like their speaking Dutch

Remmub a tahw.Â
I'd be more concerned about the Hepatitis!
You know, this story would have been really funny if he'd had this done on his butt......
It would be really funny to learn that he paid for that.
This is one of those things that I would have kept to myself.
It's inverted like a rubber stamp. They obviously wrote it on paper the way it was supposed to look, and then turned it upside down and used that as a template, not thinking about what would happen to the letters.
That tat not so important now? What a loser. If you need a tatoo to remember someone, as many seem to, you are a loser and need a better excuse for one. How about - I just want a tatoo?
@wvboy he must have really loved he,s grandma=he thought of her that much what a nice boy
It's backwards...It's awful, poor kid...I do tattoos, I'd fix it for him....
@Nikki Rustigan your a nice person for saying you would fix it=i just love that
@Nikki Rustigan Oh, I can do tattoos also. I can turn that thing into a hairy barbarian in about an hour. He will LOVE IT. Maybe I can give him a deal a get him a tattoo on his bikini line at the same time.
Wow that tattoo is horrible, even if he had gotten the placement and lettering right, look at how horrible the line work is . I do not do tattoos but could have done a better job blindfolded .
