Angie's List: Hiring a handyman

If you've been putting off basic repairs and small jobs around the house, it might be time to call a professional. According the consumer review website, Angie's List, hiring a handyman can save you time and money in the long run.

"if you are considering tackling a home improvement project, the first thing consumers should do is a full assessment of your house," says Angie Hicks, the creator of Angie's List. "don't think about your budget; walk around your house like you are going to buy it. Write down everything you see. Prioritize the list and lay your budget against it, that way you can avoid surprises."

If you have lots of small jobs on that list, hiring a handyman could get the job done faster. "A handyman will either charge by the hour or by the job. The key here: time is money! Be organized. Have a list of items that you want the handyman to tackle and have the area ready," says Hicks.

Angie's List recommends getting multiple estimates before hiring a professional, and warns that it's important to have a solid understanding of what that estimate includes.
