Portland, Ore. - Watch out, Groupon and Living Social, there’s a new competitor in town, at least in Portland.
Google Offers went live Wednesday morning in Portland, the first city to get the new service.
Portland was chosen as the test market because the online search company thinks Portlanders are more likely than others to check out local businesses.
“I think it’s crazy wild. Usually you don’t think of Portland as being picked, you usually think Boston or L.A. or San Francisco, bigger named places,” said Phil Thornburg. He was getting his morning coffee and breakfast at Floyd’s Coffee in Old Town.
Floyd’s was the first company to send out a “Google offer.” Their first deal? Spend $3 to get a $10 voucher for food.
Business owners hope the good deals for customers will mean more customers coming through the door.
“I don’t mind if there are people in all these seats, that’s fine. I like to see Floyd’s do well,” said customer Allen Hogeweide.
Google Offers works very much like the existing coupon sites Groupon, Living Social and others. Google offers consumers steep discounts, but there are a limited number of coupons available and you can only buy them for a limited time.
Local businesses Powell’s Books, Le Bistro Montage and Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade have also signed up to sell Google Offers in the coming days.
