WASHINGTON (AP) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is expanding a recall of Durabrand DVD players to include more than 4 million devices after the company said it received seven reports of the products overheating, leading to fires and property damage.

No injuries have been reported, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in announcing the expansion on Tuesday.

The Durabrand DVD players were sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores nationwide from January 2006 through July 2009. The company previously recalled 1.5 million silver DVD players on Aug. 20. Wal-Mart is recalling a total of 4.2 million players to include pink and purple players.

The safety commission said it didn't immediately have the details of the property damage amounts. The DVD players, made in China and imported by Wal-Mart, can overheat, which poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers. Wal-Mart said it has received 14 reports of the DVD players overheating, including the seven reports that resulted in fires.

The recall involves a DVD player with a remote control. The electronic device has a U-shaped opening at the top to insert the DVD. The colored players have the following product codes and model numbers:

  • Silver players have UPC 1799901002, model number 1002.
  • Pink players have UPC 1799934100, model number 1002 PINK.
  • Purple players have UPC 1799932100, model number 1002 PUR.

The safety commission said consumers should stop using the DVD player and return it to Wal-Mart for a refund. For questions or further information, consumers can call Wal-Mart customer service at (800) 925-6278 or go to http://www.walmartstores.com or http://www.cpsc.gov.
