Travel company owner calls customers 'complainers'

By Thom Jensen and KATU Web Staff

TAMPA, Fla. - The person who appears to be behind a travel company that offers no real savings despite charging "members" thousands of dollars to join, claims people who are unhappy about the service are just complainers.

Kerry Kavanaugh, a reporter from ABC Action News in Florida recently questioned Nick Congleton, 26, the company's owner, who claims he is not really the owner and then blamed customers for the myriad complaints before driving away.

Congleton is the registered owner of a company call Suncoast Incentives, with headquarters in Clearwater, Fla.

The company recently hosted seminars in Portland and Seattle under the names Suncoast Vacations and Suncoast Travel.

When first asked about details about the company, Congleton responded that he had "confidentiality" with the company and could not disclose any information.

He also denied that agents for the company were promising prospective members up to 90 percent off "regular" prices for hotels, airlines and other services.

Undercover cameras taken to Suncoast seminars and testimony from customers who paid $3,000 or more to join have shown that agents have repeatedly promised "Motel 6 prices for five-star accommodations" and "exclusive" travel deals.

Other clients said they were promised 8-day vacations in Hawaii for $500 - if they joined. Congleton denies those promises were made.

A search of Internet travel Web sites by KATU News found that the "deals" offered by Suncoast were no better than those offered on multiple free Web sites.

"Are you gonna save a bunch of money on that stuff? No, but you're gonna save something," Congleton said about the discounts his business was offering.

When pressed, Congleton told Kavanaugh that he didn't own the business, he was actually a consultant.

However, sources told KATU news that Congleton was the person who reserved space at hotels in Portland and Seattle for the seminars.

Congleton said that members who were upset about the deals they were getting were just complainers.

"Somebody could be giving out free steaks on the side of the road, and somebody would moan and groan that the steaks weren't filets. It does not matter. You cannot make everybody happy," Congleton told Kavanaugh.

He said that all big companies had complaints. Over 200 complaints have been filed against Suncoast Incentives.

"If the company was doing something wrong, do you think they we would be in business?" Congleton asked before getting into a large Mercedes Benz that was registered to the company.
