Facebook 'copyrighting' trend: Fact or fiction?
»Play Video
Here we go again.
Another viral hoax is circulating around Facebook, where many users are claiming to "copyright" their material. The long, rambling status update you may have seen goes like this: "I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, comics, etc."
But is this status update necessary? Not at all, according to one local media expert and several other official news sources. Facebook itself issued an official statement, calling it a rumor that it owns anything you post.
Benjamin Diggles, an executive at Webtrends, a digital marketing company in Portland, said it's true that Facebook can use a photo or video you post to direct better ads your way or promote Facebook.
“But they’re not really looking to take a photo you take on Mount Hood and go sell it,” Diggles said. “No, absolutely not. I’d be shocked. Do they have time for that? No way.”
Digital marketing experts say Facebook’s focus is selling ads. They may track your photo captions and other information to somehow direct the right companies to create specific ads for you, but that’s about it.
So the fear that social media accounts will take your photos and sell them, or give them to police or your boss – that scare is unfounded, Diggles said.
“I think people fantasize about what can be collected about them, and how it can be used against them,” he said.
Yeah, and the water is just fine to drink when it's orangish-purple-sort-of-thingy . . . . uhmmmm, . . . . . ri-i-i-i-ght!
But..... I read it on the internet. It MUST be true...
Â
Just look it up on wikipedia!
Â
(extreme sarcasm intended)
If you want an idea of the amount of data they collect on your profile, it'd take multiple cd's for them to cover everything they have. Â
Yup people need to read before clicking, Just like anything sent can not be taken back. It is like if any one sends me an e-mail threatening or benign, I can post it any where I want to. Just like this what we post right here can be reposed else ware It all comes down to 2 basic rules, you don't want something seen do not post it. and are you sure you want to hit that enter key?
When you signed up for a Facebook account, you agreed to their legally binding Terms of Service. Simply posting a little disclaimer on your profile does not nullify that agreement you originally made. Only way out of it is to delete your account or don't sign up at all.
"Not at all, according to one local media expert and several other official news sources. Facebook itself issued an official statement, calling it a rumor that it owns anything you post."
Â
That doesn't mean that they won't do it some time in the future.
Â
And to quote someone from Webtrends who tracks everywhere people go on the internet is like asking the fox if the chickens are safe.
Â
Never trust these folks. They do not have our best interests in mind when it comes time to revamp policy. For them it is all about money and legally violating your privacy if they can make money off of it.
 @RalphCramden Legally, they don't have to 'own' it to be able (under the EULA that you 'click' to accept when you sign up) to use it.Â
Â
People need to remember that once it's out there.... it's out there forever. Just because some document in the US says that someone 'cant' use it, doesn't mean that they cant use it. I'm often amazed by what some people put out there without thinking of the repercussions. From pictures, to slanderous diatribes to personal information.
Â
Pretty dumb, some folks are.Â
"They may track your photo captions and other information to somehow direct the right companies to create specific ads for you"
Â
That sure sounds like selling your photo to advertisers. Just because they use the photo to generate a targeted advertisement doesn't mean they didn't steal it.

PAY ATTENTION ! Facebook is dangerous. Put aside your self importance and self involvement. This is not a healthy place to be.
 @Rob C 503  It is, at least, a colossal waste of time.
 @ClackaSam  @Rob C 503 In what way, Sir? Any chance you would elaborate and I would like to know because I think I know where you are going unless you are just doing a fly-by...
 @Rob C 503 My ARMY-CID buddy assured me that the kids at the DOD all across the U.S. monitor everything that is posted on 'Facebook,' 'My Space,' et al.  He has a Top-Secret Security Clearance and is still active - I doubt most folks have any idea what is monitored.  I used to be part of that world and I yearn for the past because I am scared of our future under this elected Tyrant, Sir...
@boned ....on this boned, we can agree
@boned @Rob C 503 You got off cheap. I had an Asian wife and she cost me a heck of a lot more.
 @boned  @Rob C 503 ONLY $10,000? That ain't even 6 figures so quit yer cryin'.
@boned .....question? DOD ? Why?
@boned ....ah, those Asian women. Happened to me too. Beautiful but expensive. LOL
 @Rob C 503 That is why I remain single and will remain that way - if I cannot move it by myself I do not own it. No, I am not gay - my last Asian girlfriend cost me $10,000. It is time to sell this house on the hill and move back to The Bitterroot Valley in MT...
 @Rob C 503 I will tell you that as we speak this thread is being scanned by the DOD according to my NSA software and their office is right downtown by MAX in case you want to know where they are having done work for them...
@boned ......good one. My wife plays the same game !
 @Rob C 503 I agree with you more than you think, but I will not give you the satisfaction of being right all the time!!!
@Rob C 503 Don't forget to put your tin foil hat back on Rob.
@tony .......you just proved my point.
 @tony Make sure you do your in two layers, OK?  The first layer is with the shiny side inward to keep your thoughts inside your head and the second layer with the shiny side out to deflect those rays that read your mind...
@lee986321 ....dangerous right ?
 @boned  @tony It is not you computer that is the enemy, it is the bits and bytes you ad to it that makes it safe of not. And once posted, it is never Deleted truly. and the only way to truly delete anything is to use software like Nuke deban. Not even sure that is still around as it has 4 levels of wiping including purely zeroing out the drive and that takes a few hours.
Iâve never understood why people think Facebook cares about the manure that its cattle are producing. Facebook doesnât want your comics or picture it wants you to click on the ads so they can please their real customers.
I have a better idea... Don't post anything on Facebook (or any other social website) that you aren't willing to have anybody in the world look at or appropriate for their own purposes. Â Â Problem solved. Â
 @margay1 NO that is too easy...I want to post it then tell Facebook that something I just posted that the whole world can see is mine and mine only!  lol
 @B Smizzle ~  Good luck with that, Smizzle..   Hey, everybody's entitled to their own idea of fun..!  :-)
 @margay1  @B Smizzle You are all very funny and make a lot of sense, of course. But, I suspect none of you actively use FB and therefore, just like my husband, disses it. And he knows NOTHING about it. ha. But, that's okay, you go on going on. Like email, I would never post anything I wasn't willing to let anybody read. Why wouldn't we have the same discipline in our adult lives on a social network we mostly understand?
Â
Margay1,
That is the best idea of all! If you put it out there, someone will borrow or use it.
