Kucinich: 'It was an unidentified flying object'

Democratic presidential hopeful Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, speaks during a debate at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007.

GRAHAM, Wash. -- A presidential candidate claims he once saw a UFO in Washington state.

The candidate is Dennis Kucinich and the claim is according to the new book "Sage-ing While Age-ing" by actress Shirley MacLaine.

Some claim the first flying saucer was spotted at Mt. Rainier.

About 15 years ago, MacLaine lived in Graham. She hosted a lot of visitors, including the now-Congressman Dennis Kucinich.

Unfortunately for the presidential candidate, MacLaine writes books.

In her book, MacLaine writes that Kucinich was staying with her when something very strange happened.

"And then the smell of roses drew him out to my balcony, where he looked up. He saw a gigantic, triangular craft, silent and observing him," she said. "He said it hovered, soundless, for 10 minutes or so and sped away with a speed he couldn't comprehend."

"It was an unidentified flying object, OK. It's like it's unidentified. I saw something," Kucinich said recently in explaining the incident.

After seeing the UFO, Kucinich felt a connection in his head and heard directions in his mind, MacLaine writes in her book.

Kucinich's claims have sparked several responses. A columnist for the Boston Herald wrote a piece titled "Spaced-out Kucinich moonbatting 1000," while a Web site dedicated a map of UFO hot spots to the candidate.

We asked the good people of Graham what they thought.

"I've seen stuff out here that I can't explain," said resident Steve Johnson, "strange things in the sky."

But Nina McMillin, a long-time Graham resident, said she's never come across anything strange in all her years.

"I'd like to see one," she said "I'd like to see the Sasquatch too."

If it all sounds like hooey to you, here's some food for thought. The battallion fire chief who lives nearby told KOMO 4 News he saw three lights in the sky. But the chief refused to go on camera.
