Girl at center of police bean-bag controversy in trouble again
PORTLAND, Ore. – She was the center of a police "use of force" controversy - a 12 year old Portland girl shot with a police beanbag.
Now, she's in trouble with the police again, arrested just hours after learning her punishment for causing the confrontation on a MAX platform in Portland.
Surveillance video showed the unidentified girl struggling with police on a MAX platform last November. An officer involved in the struggle shot her with a beanbag gun at close range.
The subsequent suspension of the officer that shot the beanbag round prompted a no-confidence vote by officers on Portland Police Chief Rosie Sizer and Portland City Commissioner Dan Saltzman.
The results of the vote were withheld by the officer’s union leaders after the officer was reinstated in an administrative capacity.
On Wednesday, a judge sentenced the girl to one year of probation and ordered mental, drug and alcohol testing.
She is accused of setting fire to her bedroom and faces a reckless burning charge. Police did not say if anyone was injured in the fire or how much damage was done.
