N.C. town having NYE possum drop, without live possum
BRASSTOWN, N.C. (AP) — A New Year's Eve possum drop that attracts thousands of people to a tiny western North Carolina town will go on this year, with one big change: It won't involve a live possum.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reportsThursday that Brasstown will have the event Dec. 31 but with a different guest of honor.
During past drops, the possum was suspended in a see-through box covered with tinsel and lowered to the ground at midnight.
Last month, a judge ruled a state agency lacked authority to issue a permit for the drop. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had sued, calling the event illegal and cruel.
Clay Logan has been doing the drop for years. He says he's considering using a stuffed animal or maybe road kill this year.

It's a possum. A rodent. You are allowed to kill it in any way, but just don't put it in a box and lower it to the ground with a rope because that might offend him. Yep, make perfect sense to me.
Opossum are a rodent. They can communicate disease to humans...such a dysentery. That is cruelty to humans. Google them if you dont believe me. Kill all of them. They also can kill horses from defacating in an area that horses range. PETA should get sued by families that have sick relatives or horses. So if you kill them quickly with a gun or drowned them....is it that cruel? Â
 @Taxedstwrker Opossums are marsupials, not rodents.  If you don't believe me, look it up.  Opossums don't defecate in the open, so unless your horse is grazing in a wooded area it is unlikely to eat any opossum poop.  If you don't handle the animal or let it poop in your food you won't get dysentery from it, either. Â
PETA, I'm off to eat a ham sandwich.
They'd be delighted! Oh wait, you're talking about People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, not People Eating Tasty Animals....my bad.
Â
PS: I had chicken for lunch and turkey for dinner, today. Both were yummy, but I'm admittedly feeling pretty fowl right now.
 @OSUx2Â
Just had some tasty lentils. PETA would be proud. Just ignore the ham.
Â
Oh, and muslims would not be happy with this either....8-}
There's only one thing to serve possum with -- sweet potatoes. You only eat possum in the winter. That is because you most likely wont find babies in their pouch when you skin em.
Nothing done to an Opossum is unethical.
Cruelty to any animal is unethical, regardless, God's creatures are all here for a reason. Disgusting display of a human.
Save the mosquitos!
@MrAchilles You don't support those idiots in LA that want to ban elephant acts within the LA city limits are you?
I have other suggestions but they are all political........
 @WendyTeagarden Ha! You beat me to it!
Kevin Kolb?
@Kushfan I saw a post on a different forum that sounded just like you and a similar post to what you had here the other day. Is your alterego: handymandan100?
Nope. Dude must be stealing my best stuff.
The possum is bumbed now, he always thought it was a fun ride.
