France goes after fatty snacks with 'Nutella tax'

Despite an outcry in support of the beloved chocolate and hazelnut spread, the Senate passed a measure Wednesday that would triple the tax on palm and some other vegetable oils in the hope of cutting down on obesity.
The "Nutella tax" would affect any foods made with those oils and bring in about €40 million ($51 million).
The measure is part of a bigger bill on financing the national health care system and aims to push manufacturers to use healthier alternatives.
But Frederic Thil, the head for France of Ferrero, which makes the spread, told Le Parisien newspaper that the recipe won't change.
The lower house of parliament still has to vote on the tax.
Nutella tasted great but is packed with hydrogenated palm oil....& Im sure it's all GMO on top of that. Â I think some folks are starting to raise their awareness to the dangers of these ingredients but it's been slow coming. Â
Uhmmm....so....how come all these years we've been hearing about how the French, Italian...most Europeans eat so much healthier and aren't overweight like Americans are. It looks like all that hype was for naught. Tsk....too bad :(
I can just hear Marie Antoinette, "Quâils mangent de la brioche." Vive le France! :-P
They've been collaborating with the mayor of NYC... Â :-)
This is how women burn calories in France:

I did not know it was French. Well we will not be buying that anymore. God save the queen.
@Arther Daily The company that makes Nutella (Fererro) is based in Italy - France just wants to tax it in (or out of) their country.
Socialist scum! Don't tax the Nutella!
Government uses all kinds of reasons to increase taxes. In this case it is to fight obesity.

Just another money grab by government in an attempt to stay solvent. Well, I am here to tell you, it won't work.
Just cut to the chase and tax everyone by the pound.
I'm in deep doo then, Rachet ;-)
