Hammer-wielding suspect clobbered by bat-wielding resident
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A masked man broke into an Oildale, Calif. home early Sunday morning, armed with a hammer and demanding computers and electronics from the family that lived there, the Kern County Sheriff's Office said.
By the time deputies responded to the home the family had already subdued the man.
The incident started at around 2:10 a.m. Sunday when a masked man, later identified as 20-year-old Bobby Joe Smith III, entered a home on Lincoln Ave. brandishing a hammer, police said.
The family told officials that Smith demanded they hand over their computers and electronics or he would start beating people with the hammer.
Police said Smith started to hit a male resident with the hammer and landed several blows before another family member hit him in the head with a baseball bat.
Other family members then held Smith down until deputies arrived at the scene. Deputies arrested Smith for assault with a deadly weapon, robbery and burglary.
He was taken to Kern Medical Center and treated for his minor injuries.
The victim that Smith attacked was treated for bruises and cuts on his back, abdomen and legs he sustained from the hammer attack.
The guy with the bat had every right to kill the s.o.b. Besides, there would have been only one side of the story.
Lesson learned - don't bring a hammer to a bat fight.
Bobby Joe Smith, III.  Could we please put an end to this gene pool........
But that would end the line of BJSÂ ;-)
Just goes to prove that Baseball is, in fact, America's favorite sport.
@WendyTeagarden   This story was a hit with me.
Was he dressed like Thor?
Hey, good for this family for defending each other and their home..! Â Â I'm always happy to hear / read about people fighting back against these low-lifes..! Â :-)
Â
(Hope the guy that Smith hit with the hammer will recover real soon ~ Â and hope Smith has a headache for the next 6 months..!)Â
Don't mess with Batman!
AWESOME STORY!
These are my favorite type of stories. The guy is lucky the resident didn't have a gun handy.
WOW...home sweet home. I really don't miss Bakersfield at all. The guy is really lucky that it was just a bat. Most people areound their have guns....*(yup me too.)
Hopefully they beat some sense into him.
 @RatchetRanger Doubt it
Kudos to this family for fighting back and for the specific family member who went to the defense of a loved one.
Apparently this family has never seen the Inglourious Basterds movie.
Â
Minor injuries to the perp after taking a hammer to a family member? I'd be so terrified for my life, I'd still be swinging the bat until the police arrived.
Rock, paper, scissors. In this case bat beats hammer.
@RalphCramden Ralphie boy, I'm sorry to inform you that you are incorrect. In this case, bat beats perp.
 @beernpizzaÂ
Good one.
Â
It appeared it wasn't enough since the guy survived.
 @RalphCramdenÂ
Â
Damn Ralf LOL I was thingking the same thing.
Â
Did they have their doors locked and secured? Do they happen to know the individual? The intruder is lucky this time, some people would have fired a round or two to convince him he had the wrong job...
Â
@Just Lookin I would have fired one round. In Arizona it would have been bringin' a bat to a gun fight. I would have dropped the 'hammer'
