Man climbs storm-ravaged NJ roller coaster

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) - Police have apprehended a man who apparently climbed the New Jersey roller coaster that was swept into the ocean during Superstorm Sandy and unfurled an American flag.
The man walked from the top of the coaster and hopped into a police boat Tuesday. He was handcuffed, walked through the surf and escorted to a police car on the beach in Seaside Heights.
News 12-New Jersey says Christopher Angelo told the channel he wanted to raise awareness for shore recovery.
His mother says the 38-year-old lives at his grandmother's home in Lavallette. Diane Angelo says her son is a bit of a daredevil.
The remnants of the Jet Star Roller Coaster have become one of the iconic images of the storm.

I admire the guy's spirit.
I hope that I would be able to do the same thing if God forbid anything happened to the Giant Dipper at Belmont Park.
Such a sad photograph......
Thanks intaking pride in our flag I guess, but not too bright skippy.
Why is this a crime? Were there signs that says don't climb on the debris? Did the government pass a law that says this is not allowed.
Â
So many laws. My guess is that we are all criminals since there is some law we break on a regular basis.

I don't have to tell you Ralph that you don't have to have a specific crime on the books to be arrested for being stupid. Typically you get a citation for one of those "catchall" crimes like a nuisance, disturbance or such. Besides itâs still private property and being on it is likely trespassing.
Â
And does there HAVE to be a sign on everything for people to understand they should not climb on it? There are all kinds of places on the Oregon Coast (among many locations near here) where you will be arrested for being on for any number of reasons not posted (safety, animal protection, property rights etc).
38 , lives with grandma and hes a daredevil.....ya right
@sargerator If the grandmother is also handicapped, disabled, senile or in failing medical health--god forbid dementia--he's also a hero.

Maybe he was displaced by the storm or lost his job because of the storm.
Â
There are lots of folks who have had to move in with friends or family because of the storm.

I didn't intend to be mean; the thought was that might be the rationale of choosing the coaster as his point of reference. He was familiar with it, was comfortable with it and with it out of commission, could very well be unemployed because of it.

The economy is difficult with unemployment/underemployment in the under 25 crowd at 25%. For blacks it is 40%.
@Repoman @RalphCramden @Playanekes @sargerator My son is 39 and we share an apartment because we are both out of work and it's a cheaper way to live. This is a new time...don't be so nasty about older kids living with a parent. It's done all over the world.

i wonder if he worked on the coaster?
