Overweight N.J. gov dodges Twinkies query

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he wasn't about to take the bait: a question dealing with that quintessential junk food, Twinkies.
So when asked Friday at a news conference about Twinkies-maker Hostess shutting down, the target of many a fat joke begged off.
The governor quipped: "I know it! You people are the worst! This is a setup! I am not answering questions on Twinkies, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's bad that I even said the word 'Twinkie' from behind this microphone."
Christie has tried for years to lose weight and often jokes about his caloric struggles. He once likened his weight loss efforts to "throwing a couple deck chairs off of the Titanic."
But Friday he said he wouldn't provide more fodder to comedians.
"You know," he said, "I'm on 'Saturday Night Live' enough."

I was very impressed by Christie's ability to stand up for the people of his state, drop the partisan BS, and work with Obama and the federal government to provide disaster relief after Sandy. It really demonstrated commitment to the common good, especially after his heated speech at the RNC. The party could use more like him, who are able to accurately gauge the severity of a crisis and know when to work together. Congress should take note and follow his example. They won't, but they should. Boehner and McConnell would rather see the entire country explode in flames than ask one billionaire pay a penny more than they already do.

I recall seeing a man on Jon Stewart segment who appeared on Fox News that looked like a man who had not slept or eaten in about 2 days.
Â
On SNL he joked about being "permanently attached" to the sweater he has been ubiquitously wearing the whole time. But I can attest from my observations, it's less about comedy than reality.
Â
Blanco should take lessons from Christie.
Â
Honestly Christie is looking more like a president than I have seen most presidential candidates. If he can get a statesman or military figure like Powell to ride his ticket, you can punch it because he will be the president.

The existence of this article shows that he is damned if he does answers, and damned if he doesn't. It showcases that the media is first and foremost a business, and they will do what it takes to bring in the money.
@JTesla All "news" businesses are driven purely by ratings. They care nothing about honor, truth, integrity or justice when it comes down to the bottom line. Banks are the same way, as well as ANY organization that is driven by profit. especially where the management (not the worker bees) can reap huge salaries and perks such as multimillion dollar bonuses.
It's typical of the media to make fun of fat people they don't like.
@RalphCramden It depends on the party on the target.
I bet if Christie were gay Katu wouldn't make fun of his weight
@archon312 Not likely, especially since they aren't doing it now, but I guarantee that YOU and the rest of the shallow, bitter republican crowd would jump on any reason to mock a gay.

@Bob McMasterson  Are you saying that's why conservatives ridicule gay people?  I agree that "because it's in the bible" is a sure way to lose a debate.
I feel for anyone who has a personal struggle with weight.I think the governor has proved himself to be a genuine politician who cares very much for the people of his state.I also admire his pragmatic straightforwardness. I know it's not cool to start talking about 2016 so soon but I think the republicans should consider him to be awesome choice for their presidential candidate.
@noneofyourbizzness  """"" I think the republicans should consider him to be awesome choice for their presidential candidate."""""
Â
Last two trys the R's have got their butts kicked with a moderate candidate. By 2016 we will definitely need someone like  a Rand Paul who will put a stop to this insane federal spending
@kramr If the republicans nominate Rand Paul they will be shooting themselves in the foot.A good part of this election was decided by minorities and women. All the republican chatter lately has been about the failure to appeal to women,Latinos and even gays. The far right racist.Pat Buchannan mentioned that the election marked the end of "white America".I'll I have to say that this election was a repudiation of conservative white Christian males. For the sake of the republicans ,hopefully this election will provide some lessons for the future.
@scoreboard @kramr I'm curious what percentage of the black vote he would have got if he was the nominee?
@archon312 @kramr Neither.I'm able to accept the changing demographics of the electorate.I'm simply pointing out the reasons why your party will become completely irrelevant if they don't change course. The American people spoke on election day.Now is the time for your party to start listening.
@Jamie Keep up the hateful rhetoric! I'm looking forward to the republicans getting spanked again in 4 years. Do you ever let your woman out of her burka, or go more than 2 months without getting pregnant again? I know, silly question, of course you don't. ;-)
@noneofyourbizzness If republicans want to win over the womens' and Latinos' votes they will need to make several platform changes: 1) Stop trying to tell women what they can and cannot do with their bodies;Â 2) Stop the hypocritical moralizing and trying to tell people what to believe; 3) Stick to the real role of government and focus on those issues.
@noneofyourbizzness  @kramr Yeah, woman that seem only interested in free birth control and abortions.. and illegals that want to stay and get free handouts. Great voting block.
@noneofyourbizzness  @kramr That's why I was on the Herman Cain train. I like his ideas! I think the sex scandal was trumped up because the Dems new he could beat Obama because he was African American.
 @noneofyourbizzness  @kramr You're a racist and heterophobe aren't you?
@noneofyourbizzness He'd have my vote if he ran.
@noneofyourbizzness The only thing awesome about Christie is his weight, which is only eclipsed by his ego. Don't hold your breath for 2016. At Christie's cuurrent weight gaining pace, he won't be able to get out of bed by 2016.
@I812 His weight should be irellivant.Thats his personal business. The question would be if he could be the candidate to help move the republican party in a new direction.
@I812 Not that I would vote for him but there have been overweight presidents in the past.Who cares? And who cares about grammar? You must be a school marm?
@noneofyourbizzness Use spell/grammar check much? Christie's weight is relevant. Why would I want to elect anyone with so little self control?Â
Kinda hypocritical, people decry bullying but have no problem poking fun at his weight.
@Thebigboot Welcome to America, the land of hypocrisy, double standards and hidden agendas.Â
Whoever wrote the headline needs some education. Christie is not overweight, he is grossly obese. Christie is a (pick one) heart attack, diabetic coma, stroke, or all ot the above, waiting to happen.
@I812 Obese is just another level of overweight.
Everyone is a (you name the problem) waiting to happen.
Simply one of the joys of being human.
@I812 So Obama smokes, shall we call him out as one cigarette short of any number of problems.
@Thebigboot The article is about Chris Christie and his weight. Why would you try to bring Obama into a discussion about an obese New Jersey governor? Take "Thebigfoot" out of your mouth and try to engage your brain before typing.
On Yahoo, there is an option to "enlarge photo". Why would anyone want a bigger photo of Chris Christie?
@WendyTeagarden Hey, you may be on to something!  Maybe he is the victim of some "Twilight Zone"-like curse, and every time his photo is enlarged, he gets larger as well!
