PHOENIX (AP) - An English Springer Spaniel named Hendrix ended up taking a serious detour on his way from New Jersey to Phoenix this week.
He ended up in Ireland after being put on the wrong flight.
United Airlines spokeswoman Megan McCarthy says the 6-year-old dog was traveling in cargo Thursday when the mix-up happened. When the error was realized, she says the airline took immediate steps to get Hendrix back to his owner.
Phoenix television station KNXV reports that the first word owner Meredith Grant got about the mix-up was in a phone call from the airline before Hendrix's original flight was supposed to land in Phoenix.
Grant says she felt like someone punched her in the stomach after finding out her dog had been sent overseas.
Hendrix was returned, and the airline apologized and offered a full refund.

Lucky this dog was not on the no fly list.
Well now...this beautiful guy had quite a St Patrick's Day...probably on his way to the auld sod lookin' for his kindred family members :)
Hendrix, can you fetch me a pint?
@Kushfan ...and I'll take an Irish coffee, thank you
I hope they took him for a walk and kept him fed and watered. Sometimes I wonder about the humanity of these airlines.
The dog was first fully probed by the TSA upon returning from overseas and now will spend 3 months in quarantine until further notice.
@disgustedman Three months, is that true? That would be awful.
Puppies that are too young to be vaccinated (i.e. less than 3 months of age) must be kept in confinement until they are old enough to be vaccinated, and then confined for at least 30 days after the date of vaccination.
Unvaccinated dogs must be vaccinated within 4 days of arrival at their final U.S. destination and within 10 days of entry into the United States, and must be kept in confinement for at least 30 days after the date of vaccination.
Dogs may not be sold or transferred to other owners during this period of confinement, and the person that signs the confinement agreement is responsible for ensuring the conditions of the agreement are met.
Importers must provide a contact address where the dog will be kept during the confinement period. If the importer will be housing the dog at several addresses or traveling with the animal, all points of contact must be provided.
If my dog had to fly as cargo I'd rather just leave him home. Too many risks. Luckily he fits very nicely in the cabin and is a great flyer.
