What is the origin of Valentine's Day?
Expressing one's love to another is a celebrated custom on Valentine's Day.
Sweethearts and family members present gifts to one another, such as cards, candy, flowers and other symbols of affection.
Opinions differ as to who was the original Valentine, but the most popular theory is that he was a clergyman who was executed for secretly marrying couples in ancient Rome.
In A.D. 496, Pope Gelasius I declared Feb. 14 as Valentine Day.
Esther Howland, a native of Massachusetts, is given credit for selling the first mass-produced valentine cards in the 1840s.
The spirit continues today with even young children exchanging valentine's cards with their fellow classmates.
I find this is more appropriate for Valentine's Day...

And since today is my birthday, and also Oregon's birthday, I wish us all a wonderful Valentine's Day. And if the sun could come out a little bit more, it would be perfect :)
@fracas Happy Birthday and many more
it goes back to when two amoebas would conjoin and exchange dna i think
The greeting card companies pushed it into the status where it is now. Â This is their biggest payday of the year. Â At the cost of a card, not including ones from the "dollar stores", I can see why. Â Rather than chocolate which will cause many health problems, I prefer whiskey, which has been proven to cure almost anything if you drink enough of it.Â
Not sure, but you might be able to ask the candy companies. They might know.
Happy Valentine's Day! Make it year round, so the people you love know that you love them. <3
Every day is valentines day for my wife cuz she has me.
@old_dollor I bet she loves your modesty.
Yeah I am pretty humble, thanks for noticing.
@old_dollor Does she know that?  LOL,
Happy Valentine's Day. I hope everyone has a loved one with which to share it.
ps Happy Birthday Arizona (101)
Pffft.....Arizona? What about Oregon? http://www.50states.com/facts/oregon.htm Line 11.
@UselessOpinion "Oregon and New Jersey are the only states without self-serve gas stations."
I stopped reading right there. Â Me and Oregon are so done.
@UselessOpinion ps I love the Pac NW, but I live in Phoenix.
@Dr. Rawdog Don't get us started on that one.
@Dr. Rawdog They charge money to access
@UselessOpinion Happy Birthday to Oregon as well.
@WendyTeagarden Am not.
@UselessOpinion  3rd grader?
No. You can't make me.  :P
@UselessOpinion Also look up the "Bitter Barista" blog. He just got busted.
That doesn't feel genuine as it was a solicited response. No need to back-pedal or apologize...the damage is done. Oregon and I are going to cry over some bitter beer and free cake. Hope you and Arizona are happy.
It was made up by businesses to sell stuff. Or at least they have co-opted it to make money.
@RalphCramden No. I think it was a class project from an English teacher to see how many full sentences could be written on a heart-shaped piece of candy.
@WendyTeagardenÂ
And the English teacher got a grant from the candy company so that they could increase sales.....8-}

@Dr. Rawdog I forgot to look when I was getting a Valentine's Day card for my dog.
It was actually made up by little girls and desparate middle-aged single women.
@UselessOpinion Oh hahaha aren't you funny this morning!?! Â
@Sundowner @UselessOpinion Since you're no little girl, I guess we know which way the wind is blowing today on ol' Sundowner.
@Festivus @UselessOpinion I just sat here for 5 minutes, still can't come up with a response, cuz I'm not sure what you're saying.  This much I know when it comes to Valentine's Day (and every other day):  Nothing wrong with having a bunch of love in our life...keeps me smiling every day.  Happy Valentine's Day, Mr. Festivus and my friend UselessOpinion.
"Sweethearts and family members present gifts to one another"
I prefer to celebrate the love for my family at Festivus, when you can air your grievances and tell them how much they disappointed you.Â
@Kushfan  Then maybe I won't be conversing with you today.
@WendyTeagarden But Wendy, you've never disappointed me.
@Kushfan Thank you. I though some of those phone numbers may have done the trick
@Kushfan Don't forget the Feats of Strength.
@Festivus His strenghts are not in his feet.
