PORTLAND, Ore. - You can't beat a free movie, especially when you can kick back on a blanket or lounge in a lawn chair to watch it.

Portland Parks & Recreation's popular 'Movies in the Park' program kicks off for the summer on July 3 and this year they've even thrown a few 3D movies into the mix.

  • Saturday, July 11 - School of Rock at Lents Park
  • Friday, July 17  - Space Jam at Pier Park
  • Saturday, July 18 - Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D at Dickinson Park
  • Wednesday, July 22  - Hairspray at McCoy Park
  • Thursday, July 23 - E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial at Holly Farm Park
  • Friday, July 24 - Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa at Brentwood Park

What to Bring

  • Blanket to lay on or chairs to sit in.
  • Blanket to wrap yourself in if it gets cold.
  • Dogs are welcome but you must keep them on a leash and clean up after them.
  • You can bring drinks but alcohol is not allowed.  Shaved ice, Jamba Juice and hotdog/pizza concessions are available at most movies.

When to Arrive

  • Get there early to get a good spot.  The free movies draw 500 to 5,000 people, depending on the park.
  • Live entertainment begins at 6 p.m.
  • The movies begin at dark (between 8 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.) and are weather permitting.  If there is going to be a rainout, a notice will be posted at the park after 5 p.m.

Where to Sit

  • Just like a traditional theater, don't sit too close to the front. Try for the center.
  • If you bring chairs with you, try not to sit in front of people on blankets.  Be courteous.

The Rules

  • Cell phones must be silenced.
  • No smoking allowed.
  • No alcohol allowed.
