OREGON COAST - If you're looking for something fun to do Christmas weekend, you might think about taking a drive to the coast for some whale watching as an expected 9,000 whales make their way down coastal waters.
Whale Watch Week runs Dec. 26 through Jan. 1 and trained volunteers will be set up at 26 overlooks along the coast to help you out. In addition, the Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Clear skies and a calm ocean are ideal but Oregon State Park Ranger Morris Grover says even when conditions aren't so great, you can still spot whales, especially if you have volunteers helping you spot them.
If you go, bring binoculars and wear appropriate clothing. It's best to dress in layers, Grover advises.
