1 millionth treasure posted on Geocaching.com
SEATTLE - Geocaching is here to stay, if the numbers from the popular Web site Geocaching.com are any indication.
According to Groundspeak, Inc., the Seattle company that owns Geocaching.com, the Web site recently published its one-millionth active hidden treasure.
"Ten years ago, we never imagined geocaching would be enjoyed by millions of people throughout the world," Jeremy Irish, founder and president of Geocaching.com, said in a news release. "The sport's combination of technology and outdoor recreation has become a great conduit for providing people with real-world, location-based adventures."
The Web site got its start a decade ago and at that time there were only 75 known caches in the entire world. Now the Web site has a million caches and in 2009 logged 1.2 billion page views.
What is a Geocache?
A geocache is a treasure that is hidden in public places like parks, beaches or mountaintops. Anyone can hide a treasure box anywhere they like and then post the GPS coordinates online. Geocache seekers then use those coordinates to try to find the hidden treasure.
