KENO, Ore. (AP) - The state police and state Department of Fish and Wildlife plan to increase their presence in Klamath County this hunting season.

State police estimate that 25 to 40 percent of hunters in the Keno Unit do so without a valid tag.

Deer hunting east of the Cascades is managed through a controlled hunt system, meaning hunters must apply for a tag each year. Police say 750 deer tags were offered in the Keno Unit for the 2009 season.

Those caught hunting without a tag could be charged with a misdemeanor and have their weapon seized.
