Pair killed after fall at rock climbing area

KLICKITAT COUNTY, Wash. - A man and a woman died Sunday after a fall at a popular rock climbing area in the Columbia River Gorge, authorities said.

It happened about 1 p.m. at Horsethief Butte in Klickitat County, according to Virginia Painter, a spokeswoman for the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. The climbing area is located in Columbia Hills State Park on the Washington side of the Columbia River east of The Dalles.

An eyewitness told KATU the man died at the scene while the woman was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to an area hospital. It was not clear when she was pronounced dead.

Their names were not immediately released.
