30 years later, woman with cancer warns of teen tanning

SALEM, Ore. - A natural tan from the sun can be a rare thing in the Northwest, which is why so many people go to tanning salons. But lawmakers are considering a bill that would ban anyone under 18 from tanning in them.
And if the bill becomes law, teenagers would be banned from tanning beds even if their parents said it was OK.
While some parents might say they should have the right to decide for their own kids, one woman who testified before lawmakers Monday said tanning is so bad parents shouldn’t get a say.
"Twenty-five, 30 years later, her I am (with) scars down my chest, on my back (and) on the side of my stomach," Brigitte Thomas told lawmakers at the Capitol.
Thomas used to be hooked on indoor tanning and said it took 30 years for the consequences to catch up.
"I have had 11 surgeries – three surgeries this month of cutting skin cancer out," she said. "It's scary. I have one more surgery in two months. I started tanning at the age of 15."
Supporters like Thomas say it's so important to flat out ban teenagers from tanning salons, regardless of what parents say, because salons sometimes let them in even without their parent’s permission.
And Thomas would know. She worked at a tanning salon when she was 16.
"We did not go by those rules at 16 years old. We did not do any of the rules," she said.
Joseph Levy came before lawmakers to represent tanning salon owners.
"This is a much more complicated issue than simply saying any sun is damage," he said. "To say any sun is damage is like saying water causes drowning and therefore you shouldn’t drink water."
He also said if teens are banned from salons, they'll just buy at-home products over the Internet and tan, unsupervised, at home.
the government is involved to much in our lives, people need to use common sense
Really You sheep are all for the Government protecting you from yourselves....How pathetic.
Yes I agreed with bill vanity gets in the way has nothing to do with their education
But the tanning salons offer such good deals.Â
You can publicize the evils of tanning beds, too much sun, not protecting your skin on cloudy days, but people will do what they want.Â
People still smoke and they know risks.
Live fast, die young...leave an ugly rotting corpse.Â
If a teenager is unable to read, understand and comply with simple posted warnings perhaps it is a reflection upon the level of education received from the Portland school district.
I'm not a teenager so i don't care
Teenagers creates a new race called carrot. They need to stop tanning. They get addicted to it easily.
How about parents step up and take responsibility for their children. The more the government "shelters" us, the less people will choose to be responsible for their own lives. Governmental nannying is turning everyone into bickering children. Encourage parens to do their job, and leave government out.
Sounds like they've passed a budget and can go home now.
As a registered nurse, I can tell you that ALL tanning beds should be illegal. They cause melanoma just like the sun does for ANYONE, not just young people. This has been proven by medical research.....WHY does it continue to be ignored?
,or piercing,or texting or sexting let me think ummmm
Typical people trying to ban everything that other people can't control themselves around. Be good parents and teach your children that too much tanning is bad for you, doesn't make you look prettier, and nobody's interested in making out with a leather-skinned orange anyway.
I don't think it's smart for anybody to tan...
Natural selection. It's about time we get back to letting it do it's work. Tan away, help yourselves :)
I imagine tanning beds are dangerous at ANY age
What next no potato chips because it leads too obesity get real idiots...
Brie. We don't need laws for everything but in this case many parents have proved they cannot be trusted
So I am going to write a letter to the Oregon Government giving them 100% control of my life and money. That way they can just stop legislating it away from me and wasting money on common sense laws. Don't allow your kids to tan. We don't need a law for every single little tiny thing.
Because not all parental decision are wise ---- I have WAY TOO many people I know that tanned and suffered for it!!!! What is wrong with the natural color of your skin ??
i already thought you had to be 18 to tan..??
I never tanned as a teenager but once or twice but in my 30's I did a lot and about 10 years later, I started seeing signs and one on my back had to removed. I get a lot of pre-cancer spots and would never advise anyone to use the beds without sun-screen.
I was an avid tanner and I've learned to find the right spray on tanner after hearing too many horror stories. It's worth it to stop. And to protect teens that don't get it, at an age that they're only worried about looks!
Good idea
Why do people think that there needs to be laws to micromanage how to raise and protect children?
as a kid or young teen most of them dont have a concept of mortality yet we as adults should protect the youth by making age restrictions on things that can hurt them why would this be anything but common cents do we allow teen smoking or teen drinking no and this is potentially as much of a health issue

What happened to parents doing their job? These kids need parents money to pay for this. So parents act like adults. Say. nO. Keep government out of our lives. You complain about government being to big-gee is this not too big!!!,
First the no slow pokes in the left hand lane, now this? Is this what happens to our state government after the fiscal cliff? I'm worried.
Why is it always the "survivors" that speak out on this crap? 30 years ago, we already knew that laying out in the sun or tanning could cause skin cancer. She used those tanning beds with full knowledge of this. Yet NOW she comes back wanting to help set a law in some kind of vain attempt to force people to stop. Hypocrite. This is as bad as tobacco users wanting to sue the tobacco companies when they get cancer, even though they have full knowledge that smoking causes cancer. You're not going to be able to legislate stupid people.
I think the ban should be for those under 15 only. Parents should be the ones to decide if they want their teens 15 and older to tan, how long and how often. They should be asked to sign a consent with those parameters at the tanning business.
Whats next? following NY law and banning 2 liter sodas?
I say its up to the parents. I know I wouldn't let my kids do that til' they are 18
That's right what is the government going to get involved with telling us what we can and can't do.
not good for anyone really but ....
Lets let the tea baggers live in a world with no regulation. We can send them all to an island and they will have factories rule the land with no rules what so ever. Three year olds will smoke and drunk drivers will be celebrated. Lets let them have their utopia
Funny how this post suddenly attracts "experts" in cancer/melanoma.. FFS
Give me a break.its funny these liberal losers have so much time to focus on crap like this but no time to focus on job creation.its riddiculous that you Oregonians keep voting these same do nothing liberals back into office time and time again.
Wow we better not let anyone move to Florida either! They are gonna do what they want anyway...Whats next?
Then ban fast food too, or energy drinks or how about soda!
Those who want parental signature. You are assuming the parents are responsible, smart and well informed enough to understand the danger of tanning and that no signature will be forged
start banning beds and the sun and you will have more diseases from people having low vitamin D. Moderation is the key. Low vitamin D can cause just as serious diseases as cancer. People need to be informed but its still their choice
@Christi Spencer The problem is that tanning beds are not the equivalent of the sun.  They use mostly UVA rays, however it's UVB that generates Vitamin D.  The tanning industry trying to equate a tanning bed to natural sunlight is a joke.
Ban all tanning beds! If it isn't natural, it's crap!
McDonalds causes cancer too maybe we should put a age restriction on mcshits too. Its a choice...
i thought there was 18 and under got to have signed parent promission
If Ppl of Any age, wants to tan? And they know the risks! Then let them tan, all day, everyday! Thats their problem..let them be Dumb!!

No they shouldn't it should be up to the parent
@Jewel Rowlands Cowart So should parents be able to decide if their kids get to smoke or drink?  Cigarettes will take longer to kill you than a tanning bed will.
No they shouldn't it should be up to the parent
