Bonamici: Time to act on guns after young man from her district killed at SPU

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici is calling on her colleagues to reduce gun violence after learning that a young man from her district died in Thursday's shooting at Seattle Pacific University.

Paul Lee attended schools in the Beaverton School District and graduated last year from Westview High School.

Bonamici, a Democrat, offered condolences to Lee's family, but said the memory of Paul and other victims is best served through action.

She says Congress must strengthen America's mental health system and pass stricter background checks to keep guns away from those might commit inexcusable violence.

Bonamici says Congress must demand greater accountability in reporting and investigating mental health concerns, and invest in more research on treatment.
