Clinton: Obama showing way to more modern economy
»Play Video
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — President Barack Obama inherited a wreck of an economy, "put a floor under the crash" and laid the foundation for millions of good new jobs, former President Bill Clinton declared Wednesday night in a Democratic National Convention appeal aimed at millions of hard-pressed Americans yet to decide how to vote.
"If you want a you're-on-your-own, winner-take-all society, you should support the Republican ticket," Clinton said. "If you want a country of shared prosperity and shared responsibility — a we're-all-in-this-together society — you should vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden."
Obama's high command released excerpts of his remarks hours before Clinton's appearance as they worked to control the political fallout from an embarrassing retreat on the party platform.
Under criticism from Republican challenger Mitt Romney, they abruptly rewrote the day-old document to insert a reference to God and to declare that Jerusalem "is and will remain the capital of Israel." Some delegates objected loudly, but Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, presiding in the largely-empty hall, ruled them outvoted. White House aides said Obama had personally ordered the changes, but they did not disclose whether he had approved the earlier version.
The episode was an unwanted intrusion for Democratic officials, who scripted the evening to showcase Clinton, popular 12 years after he left office with the budget in balance and now their unofficial ambassador-in-chief to anxious voters in a tough economy.
"In Tampa the Republican argument against the president's re-election was pretty simple: 'We left him a total mess, he hasn't finished cleaning it up yet, so fire him and put us back in,'" Clinton said in advance excerpts.
"I like the argument for President Obama's re-election a lot better. He inherited a deeply damaged economy, put a floor under the crash, began the long hard road to recovery and laid the foundation for a more modern, more well-balanced economy that will produce millions of good new jobs, vibrant new businesses, and lots of new wealth for the innovators."
Obama arrived in his convention city earlier in the day, and officials said he would be in the hall when Clinton spoke.
On an unsettled convention day, aides scrapped plans for the president to speak to a huge crowd in a 74,000 seat football stadium, citing the threat of bad weather in a city that has been pelted by heavy downpours in recent days.
"We can't do anything about the rain. The important thing is the speech," said Washington Rey, a delegate from Sumter, S.C.
That and the eight-week general election campaign about to begin between Obama and Republican challenger Romney, who spent his second straight day in Vermont preparing for this fall's debates with Obama.
Clinton shared prime time with Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic candidate for a Republican-held Senate seat in Romney's Massachusetts. For many years "our middle class has been chipped, squeezed and hammered," she said in excerpts released in advance.
In a tight race for the White House and with control of the Senate at stake, Democrats signaled unmistakable concern about the growing financial disadvantage they confront. Officials said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who was Obama's first White House chief of staff, was resigning as national co-chair of the president's campaign to help raise money for a super PAC that supports the his re-election.
Unlike candidates, outside groups can solicit donations of unlimited size from donors. At the same time, federal law bars coordination with the campaigns.
Inside the hall, a parade of speakers praised Obama, but many went relatively easy on Romney after a series of scathing speeches on the convention's opening night.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, who sits opposite Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on the House Budget Committee, was something of an exception.
"When President Clinton left office, America had projected surpluses of trillions of dollars over the next decade. Then came two wars, two huge tax cuts tilted to the wealthy and a new entitlement. Republicans didn't pay for any of it. Paul Ryan voted for all of it," he said.
Clinton's speech marked the seventh consecutive convention he has spoken to party delegates, and the latest twist in a relationship with Obama that has veered from frosty to friendly. The two men clashed in 2008, when Obama outran Hillary Rodham Clinton's wife for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Clinton, then a New York senator, now Obama's Secretary of State, was in East Timor as the party met half a world away. She made a cameo appearance on the huge screens inside the Time Warner Cable Arena, though, turning up in a video that celebrated the 12 Democratic women senators currently in office.
Whatever the past differences between presidents current and past, Obama and his top aides looked to Clinton as the man best able to vouch for him when it comes to the economy, his largest impediment to re-election.
As a group, white men favor Romney over Obama, according to numerous polls, but a Gallup survey taken in July showed 63 percent of them view the former president favorably, to 32 percent who see him in unfavorable terms.
Republicans have suddenly discovered a lot to like about Clinton — a man they impeached in late 1998 when they ran the House and he sat in the Oval Office.
Ryan made no mention of those unpleasantries when he told a campaign audience in Iowa, "Under President Clinton we got welfare reform. President Obama is rolling back welfare reform.
"President Clinton worked with Republicans in Congress to have a budget agreement to cut spending. President Obama, a gusher of new spending."
Independent fact checkers have repeatedly debunked the claim about Obama's welfare proposals. Nor did the Wisconsin lawmaker mention that under a balanced budget compromise with Clinton to rein in federal spending, Republicans agreed to create a new benefit program that provides health care for lower-income children and others ineligible for Medicaid.
The changes in the platform came after the Republicans criticized an earlier decision to strip out a reference to God.
Romney said that "suggests a party that is increasingly out of touch with the mainstream of the American people. ... I think this party is veering further and further away into an extreme wing that Americans don't recognize."
Romney had declared in a summertime trip there that Jerusalem was the country's capital. U.S. policy for years has held that the city's status is a matter for negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, and Democrats said at the time he was pandering to Jewish voters in the United States.
The switch puts the platform in line with what advisers say is the president's personal view, if not the policy of his administration. "Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel," it says. "The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths."

Obama expands advantage over RomneyPosted byCNN's Ashley Killough
Â
(CNN) - Three days after the Democratic convention wrapped up, President Barack Obama opened up his largest margin over Mitt Romney since early July in Gallup's daily tracking poll.
Â
According to the poll released Sunday, Obama has 49% among registered voters nationwide, while Romney has 44%.
Romney just said on cnn that he is not willing to repeal obamacare. he is however ready to reform it. Every day is a new turn around, Yesterday he was blaming ryan for something ryan signed. ryan this morning is not willing to follow some of romney's programs. it reminds me of two mice stuck in the kitchen, their mouse hole is blocked and the lady is after them with a broom. Â
Bill Clinton: The President that 'gave' the US economy Most Favored Nation trade status for China (MFN), and NAFTA. Â He and Alan Greasepan, despite much hype and positive spin, *might* (it is arguable) have provide some short-term boosts to the economy, but in the end, the long-term damage will far outweigh the meager positives.

"Obama showing way to more modern economy."
Â
Yep, it showed up in the jobs report today. More of the same. No growth.
What economy?

Does anyone else find it ironic that the Democrats are claiming that the Republicans have a "War on Women" and yet they have Bill Clinton as a keynote speaker and give a tribute to Ted Kennedy?Â
Â
Another one of those things that make you go Hmmm........

 @wahoo  @shek069 He was the best just because you say so? I don't think so.....
@shek069 @wahoo No because a large majority of Americans say so.
@shek069 I was under the impression that your religon teaches forgiveness and redemption.I know that later on in his life Kennedy turned into a devout catholic who had regrets.I'm sure Clinton had many regrets as well.I think we all have regrets about un-ethical immoral events that happened in our lives no?
 @noneofyourbizzness  @shek069 Forgiveness, yes. Forgetfulness, NO. Feelings of regret are all well and good, but it's the ACTIONS that matter.
@Altazi @shek069 Absolutely! I know that's what I strive for.
 @noneofyourbizzness  @shek069 If Kennedy was truly a devout Catholic he would have changed parties to become a Republican and change his stance on abortion to pro-life instead of pro-choice.
@shek069 Do you follow all of the laws of the new testament like Ephesians 4:31 or 2nd Timothy 2:24 or Matthew 7:1? How many devout Christians who have ignored Matthew 5:31-32?
@shek069 How about the devout gay episcopal bishops? It's not your place to question or judge how devout a person is to their religon.The problem with many fundamentalist Christians like yourself is that you love to point out other Christian's shortcomings or interpretation of the bible.Its almost like you are pretending to be god yourself.
 @noneofyourbizzness What part of devout don't you understand. Devout means to follow the teachings to the best of your ability. If your faith teaches you that abortion is wrong, then to be devout would mean you are against abortion. I thought you were smarter than that.
@shek069 @noneofyourbizzness Many people can be devoted to their faith and not follow the exact teachings of their faith.There are millions of gay Christians.I think their choices in life should be left to themselves and their god.As a Christian,you should know better than to place judgement on other Christians.
Clinton pardoned 140 people in his last day in office. What was that all about? Slick is as slick does.
 @TimBurr bush did this every year though....

Boy, anyone see the ratings from last night??? It appears no one but nostalgic libturds were interested in taking a trip down memory lane.
A ReRun of Criminal Minds had more viewers than Clinton
Â
FYI, any one interested in making the DNC more entertaining to watch tonight  should do this.... Turn on the DNC and then in the background play the theme music to the Benny Hill show. Works every time.....
 @kramr First night of DNC drew 26.2 million viewers  compared to the RNC's first night audience of 22.3. DNC's night two (night 2)still topped night two of the RNCa week ago: 20,622,000 vs. 20,049,000 which will be adjusted up once the numbers from the cable channels are counted. My source is the nielsen ratings but don't let facts get in the way of your argument. Only Football beat it, not a rerun of Criminal Minds, but again I am using facts.
@CorporateCowMoo Â
CBS and Fox shared third in the demo, with a 1.4 rating; CBS led in viewers with 5.1 million. The network had a slightly down Big Brother, dropping 9 percent to a 2.1 adults rating, an encore of Criminal Minds (1.2 rating) and coverage of the DNC, including President Clinton's big speech. CBS News brought in a 0.9 adults rating, boosting its score in the absence of NBC's political coverage.
So You Think You Can Dance was down 7 percent on Fox, with a 1.4 rating in 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers.
Comedy encores led into ABC News' DNC hour, which also posted a 0.9 rating. The network averaged a 1.0 rating and 3.6 million viewers.
Oh Sit! earned another 0.4 adults rating on The CW.
@CorporateCowMoo @kramr I wish the numbers were bigger for both sides.It's amazing how dumbed down the population has become.These conventions are important moments in history but yet people still would rather watch Jersey Shore or slutty housewives.
@noneofyourbizzness  Ya, Jaywalking is rather alarming at times the ingorance of some people.   It'd be a lot more funny if it wasn't so true. Â
@kramr You might know the numbers,I've read that a large segment of the population doesn't even vote.I've watched Jay Leno where he goes out on the street and asks people basic questions like the name of the vice president and the don't even know!
@noneofyourbizzness   """""I wish the numbers were bigger for both sides.It's amazing how dumbed down the population has become"""""
Â
On that was can agree :)    the fact that what ever that redneck hilbilly show Honey BooBoo (or whatever its called) beat out the RNC and tied the DNC is actually very frightning.
@kramr It's called *Liberal* not *Libtards* *Conservative* not *Conservaturds* *Democrat* not *Demorats* *Conservative* not *Conservaturds* *Republican* not *Repubes* *Obama* not *Obammy* *Mitt* not *Mittens*.Were all adults here,at least I assume so.
@noneofyourbizzness  """"*.Were all adults here,at least I assume so.""""
Â
When I see you making thes same comments to the lefties on this I'll start taking you seriously.
@kramr I question your reading comprehension ability.You didn't notice that my comment was directed at the "lefties" as well?
 @noneofyourbizzness  @kramr Are we still allowed to use Hussein (Muslim) as Obama's middle name?
 @TimBurr  @noneofyourbizzness  @kramr Can mitt still stand up to the truth???
http://youtu.be/W_pgfWK3sxw
@TimBurr I realize that many people go by their middle name but the President doesn't.I have no problem with addressing him as Barack Hussein Obama.
 @kramr Higher ratings then the R's got, and they didn't have to compete with football.
@kramr Clinton left office with the highest end-of-office approval rating of any U.S. president since World War II.Other countries don't really care about the sex lives of their political leaders.Clinton was a popular president and I would vote for him again in a heartbeat.
@noneofyourbizzness  "Clinton left office with the highest end-of-office approval rating of any U.S. president since World War II"    Where did you find that missinformation?  Whose approval? What a reach that would be! Even worse, I think you actually believe it!
@erudite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Clinton
 @noneofyourbizzness  @kramrÂ
Â
Sex lives are one thing, but a cigar in the oval office where many great men have worked is disrespectful, Â then lying about it looking right into the camera like he had nothing to hide...total disrespect to the people he served.Â
@pdxranger1 @kramr I agree.It was horrible.I also think the Speaker of the House cheating on his extremely sick wife during the impeachment hearings was the higth of hipocricy.
LMAO!!!Thanks for the Laugh kramr.
@cpt.iceman  what laugh....... I'm serious  :)
 @cpt.iceman Go mitt
http://youtu.be/W_pgfWK3sxw
I agree but It still made me Laugh.
If the demos could be open to logic they would realize Clinton was not in charge of his destiny...if not for Bill Gates and the dot.com's his economic policies would have done irreparable damage...I do give Clinton credit for recognizing he needed to compromise to keep the government moving...unlike Obama who has only made things worse, split the country, divided the people...and yes, in some cases caused great hate.  So many things it is hard to narrow it all down. We saw clearly the Democrat version of democracy on display last night with the God and Jerusalem amendment. The NOs got louder and louder with each of the 3 votes, but the TelePrompter said otherwise, and The TelePrompter always wins. It was rather dramatic and will go down as the end of Obama. That video will be replayed over and over.
Clinton did move to the center and worked with the reps. to save his presidency and helped the country along the way. The contrast between Clinton and Obama could not be more clear. Obama never worked with the Republicans before or after the mid-term elections. If he had, he would have an easy re-election. Interesting how elections in 2010 did not give Obama a clue that he was off the track â he has to be the most Narcissistic personality ever to have been elected prez and by being âmy way or the highwayâ he proves to be incompetent to extremeâ¦time to get him out of our livesâ¦.
Sooooo many lies, stretching the truth, innuendos⦠Interesting, there is a zero percent chance of rain tonight.
Â
Meant to add...if you can think back to the last couple of years of Clinton the economy was already failing, the stock market going down, property values waning...if he had another year you demos would have to eat a lot of words...,
