Domenici admits fathering son with colleague's daughter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Former Sen. Pete Domenici of New Mexico fathered a son outside of his marriage more than 30 years ago with the then-24-year-old daughter of a Senate colleague, the retired Republican has acknowledged.
The revelation stunned many who know the state's longest-serving senator as a family man who advocated honesty.
Domenici and Michelle Laxalt sent statements to the Albuquerque Journal identifying their son as Nevada attorney Adam Paul Laxalt. They said they decided to go public with their decades-old secret because they believed someone was about to reveal the information in an attempt to smear Domenici.
"I deeply regret this and am very sorry for my behavior," Domenici, 80, said in his statement, published in the Journal's Wednesday editions. "I hope New Mexicans will view that my accomplishments for my beloved state outweigh my personal transgression."
Domenici and Michelle Laxalt agreed to keep his fatherhood secret because he and her father, Paul Laxalt of Nevada, were senators at the time she gave birth.
Michelle Laxalt is a former Capitol Hill staffer who now works as a prominent lobbyist in the Washington, D.C. area. Public records show she is now 58 and her son is 34.
Laxalt said in a statement that she chose to raise her son as a single parent.
"One night's mistake led to pregnancy more than 30 years ago," she said.
The Albuquerque Journal reports she worked for several senators, but never Domenici.
During six terms in office In New Mexico, Domenici was known for his unflagging support of the state's national laboratories and military installations. In Washington, he became a power broker for his work on the federal budget and energy policy. He also was an advocate for insurance coverage for mental health.
Domenici declined to seek a seventh Senate term in 2008, saying he had been diagnosed with an incurable brain disorder.
Edward Lujan, former chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, said he had heard rumors about the child years ago, but "I didn't pay much attention. I didn't care. Those kinds of things honestly are between the families and has nothing to do with how he did his job."
Domenici voted for the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton after his affair with Monica Lewinsky, but his floor statement focused on the fact that Clinton had lied under oath, noting that the trial "has never been about the President's private sex acts, as tawdry as they have been."
But he did note that "truthfulness" is the first pillar of good character in a program he helped establish for school children in New Mexico.
"I don't think there was anything hypocritical about anything," Lujan said. "... I admire him as much today as I did yesterday and the day before."
In his statement, Domenici said he was sorry that he caused hurt and disappointment for his wife and other family members. Domenici is the father of eight children with his wife, Nancy. He said he disclosed the situation to his family several months ago.
"I have apologized as best as I can to my wife, and we have worked together to strengthen our relationship," Domenici said.
Domenici told the Journal his son participated in the drafting of his statement. But it was unclear if the two had a prior relationship.
Reached at his home in Washington Wednesday morning, Domenici said he had nothing more to say.
The Laxalts did not immediately respond to emails and phone calls seeking comment.
Michelle Laxalt's statement said her interaction with Domenici "consisted of telling him my decision, asking that he avail himself for health-related purposes, and asking that he agree that this remain private between the two of us."
The website for Adam Laxalt's law firm, Lewis and Roca, said he is a former U.S. Navy officer and lawyer who served in Iraq. He also worked for then-Sen. John Warner, R-Va., and as a special assistant to an undersecretary of state, according to the website.
Former colleagues said they doubted the revelations would impact Domenici's strong legacy.
"His contribution to our country, to our state, our community, cannot be diminished in my view by personal events," said former Gov. Garrey Carruthers.
Carruthers, who is also Republican, said Domenici called him Tuesday night to tell him the story was coming out.
"It's regrettable," he said. "I guess most of us were quite surprised."
Domenici served New Mexico well and "deserves to be left alone, Democratic Party Chairman Javier Gonzales said.
"People need to step away and allow the senator and his family to focus on this in the privacy of their own home."

We're talking about a child born 30 years ago to a politician who is no longer in office? Like I care what this guy did 30 years ago. Unless of course, he used campaign money or my tax dollars to hide it.
Politician
and the word
honestyÂ
don't belong on the same line.
Oil and water.
Well, as long as they all - all of these elected HYPOCRITES - dems and republicans - get to keep on keeping on. That's all that matters. What'a little lie between Senators? And all of their constituents - too bad for all of them - they get lied, lied, lied to - about the character and integrity of Domenici = Domenici gets to keep on keeping on - and now Domenici has a comfortable ONE PERCENTER public servants retirement.
It's all a story book ending - for the lowly elected elitists that serve us.
As they ALl lie, lie, lie - and do as they please.
Just what Obama needs. Another normal male getting caught after having sex with (can it be true?) (can it be some sort of anomaly?) with a (gasp!) ...female? LOL. What ever it takes to get the story off of Obama's rising unemployment numbers and his Benghazi screw up.
And to quote mccinsane on the "whole iraq invasion thingy"..."it was just an honest mistke"..hmmm
4000 plus die because the village idiot said "god wanted him to attack iraq" and 4 die in benghazi at a remote site that was over run by zelots and mccinsane says "we must get to the bottom of this tragedy"
Ya, right .....keep going bs !
@sargerator Obama could have ended it the day he stepped into office. Unless of course he had something to gain by continuing the war.... Hmmmmmmm
Obama lied and 4 died, how many died when George W lied?
@CorporateCowMoo So what you're trying to say is, 'Bush lied, Bush lied"! Don't forget to stomp your feet and blame Bush for the meteor in pa-Russki.
Are you saying the village idiot didn't lie us into war...really...REALLY...man your ill informed !
@CorporateCowMoo 3,500 Soldiers ??
4487 as of last september but hey , you're only off by about a third.....ah thats ok, that was a republiCON lied into war. The bigger problem is 4 state department people that died in benghazi !
@last boyscout I think because you bring Obama into every one of your comments (like on the naked barista story earlier) and blame him for everything, I'll start blaming Tom Cruise for everything.  Oh, but then you'd like that, wouldn't you?  Mind if I call you "last broscout"?  Tsk, tsk.
@Sundowner @last boyscout Oh that's right, nobody is ever supposed to say anything baaaaaad about dear leader.
I have to say I'm rather shocked. I lived in NM for 16 years and during that whole time Domenici was Senator and overall he did a great job.Â
Just another lying slimeball politician.
Just another hypocrite politician. And no, neither major party has a lock on hypocrisy.
It sounds as if it was totally consentual, between legal adults. The man has been retired for a few years.  Not a news story...but thanks for trying
So when he was 50 he was diddling his colleague's 24-year old daughter?  Good 'christian' man, no doubt.  Some of these Repubs sure know how to incorporate hypocrisy into everyday living.Â
@SundownerÂ
Thankfully the Democrats are all honest and above board.
@RalphCramden @Sundowner Right, because they would never lie or "conveniently forget" anything about Benghazi......
@sargerator You do realize that most of those deaths came while Obama was in office, right? And again, he could have ended it the day he took office. Why didn't he?
Ya, cause when republiCONs lie they do it up BIG, you know, WMD's and yellow cake , oh and don't forget the clencher, "he tried to kill my daddy"...yep only 4400 plus died when republiCONs lied and mccinsane said it wasn't worth looking into but, oh no, 4 die in benghazi, we need to roast some people RIGHT NOW !
You rightwingnutjobs are all that !
@SundownerHypocrisy crosses party lines. It is one thing that is bipartisan.
@Saltire He should have kept his mouth shut during the Clinton impeachment thing....he deserves ire for his hypocrisy, just as others who espouse their virtuous nature while lying/covering up their own truths.  That's all I'm saying....I hold neither party up on a pedestal.
@Sundowner Yes, this is much worse than playing footsie in the bathroom at the airport. That's pefectly fine and dandy, but how dare this guy have consensual sex.

@TheUglyTruth Huh?  Next time in English?
@wvboy Exactly.  Guess I worded it wrong, but that's where I was headed.
@TheUglyTruth @wvboy While humorous from your own point of view, your sarcasm is lacking regarding "smaller words"...cute effort though.  BUT no one side can be held harmless in the hypocrisy department.  Repubs get slammed for theirs when their true "family values" garbage comes back to bite them in the hiney. Â
I think the point that Sundowner is saying - or at least from my perspective - is that Rep's (mostly Christians by thier own admission) tend to be a whole lot more hypocritical when it comes to holding up family values - as thier values - and then not living by them. They are more likely to live the life of " live as i say not as i do"

@TheUglyTruth Link?
@Sundowner @TheUglyTruthÂ
This is not possible. According to Sundowner only Republicans do this kind of stuff.
@RalphCramden @TheUglyTruth Nice try to pick a fight, but you'll notice that in my comments after my first one slamming the guy, I said I find both parties to be guilty of hyposcrisy.Â

The FBI is investigating allegations....so...it is far from "TRUE" yet.   That said...it is a politician....more than likely true.
but "theuglytruth" said something about "bias", thatnks for proving it wrong !
