Folks pack City Hall as fluoride debate heats up
»Play Video
PORTLAND, Ore. - Should fluoride be added to the city's water supply?
That's the question that was being discussed at a City Council hearing Thursday afternoon and folks packed the chambers to sound off on what they think the city should do.
Around 200 or so people signed up to speak to the City Council about the issue and at one point, things got a little heated when a woman who opposes the idea was escorted out of chambers following an outburst.
Outside City Hall, demonstrators gathered with signs to show their opposition to the idea of fluoridation.
"I drink two quarts of water a day," said demonstrator Renee Kimball. "I'm taking in probably four times as much fluoride as someone else."
Supporters were there as well.
"The facts are the facts - fluoridation works," said Kylie Menagh-Johnson. "It reduces tooth decay by at least 25 percent in both adults and children. And no amount of debate or misinformation is going to change those facts."
Portland Mayor Sam Adams, as well as City Commissioners Randy Leonard and Nick Fish, support the plan. Adams said Oregon's children suffer from much higher rates of tooth decay than kids in neighboring states, and noted that the problem is especially stubborn for lower-income children whose parents can't afford dentists.
"I'm all for Portland standing up and being its wonderful, weird self, but not in this regard," he said.
There are some local officials outside of Portland who feel they are being left out of the conversation, even though their water comes from the same place - the Bull Run reservoir.
In Gresham, Mayor Shane Bemis told us he is frustrated that there has been no process to let him have a voice in the matter. At this point, he has not taken a stance on the fluoride issue either way but said he feels that the matter as a whole is not being handled well.
Both Bemis and Lou Ogden, Tualatin's mayor, wrote letters to Portland Mayor Sam Adams and the City Council saying "in this case, fluoridation is clearly an elective expense as opposed to a necessary expense" and that the "process feels like it happened behind closed doors with very little input."
Bemis said he has not heard back from Adams. He said Adams instead had the pro-fluoride folks call him to explain their position.
Many in Portland, and the state at large, have long opposed public fluoridation. While 73 percent of the U.S. population drinks water treated with fluoride, the rate is less than 25 percent in Oregon.
Portland is the second-largest city in the country without fluoride in its water, behind San Jose, Calif., according to the American Dental Association. The water district serving San Jose has voted to begin fluoridation, but money to do so hasn't been raised.
Portland voters have three times rejected fluoridation, most recently in 1980. The issue had not been on the public radar until early August, when The Oregonian reported that a coalition of health and other organizations had been lobbying the City Council to fluoridate the water, and gained the support of Leonard, who oversees the Portland Water Bureau.
City Hall quickly received hundreds of calls from supporters and opponents of fluoridation, which would cost an estimated $5 million.
Gullible people fooled into believing that fluoride (hazardous waste pollutants) is safe & effective - a small example:-

TOOTH DECAY CRISES IN FLUORIDATED AREAS- 2008 figure Fluoride News Tracker Tooth decay: a sad national epidemic caused by lack of dentists who care and not a fluoride need. Extensive lobbying, political maneuvering and expensive public relations campaigns by organized dentistry sway legislators to add fluoride chemicals into public water supplies, 2/3 of which already are, to benefit those whom dentists neglect. Sodium Fluoride:Â Nerve Agent Precursor

Or let's move on to your FUD: IARC Group 3: "Group 3: The agent (mixture or exposure circumstance) is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans. This category is used most commonly for agents, mixtures and exposure circumstances for which the evidence of carcinogenicity is inadequate in humans and inadequate or limited in experimental animals. Exceptionally, agents (mixtures) for which the evidence of carcinogenicity is inadequate in humans but sufficient in experimental animals may be placed in this category when there is strong evidence that the mechanism of carcinogenicity in experimental animals does not operate in humans. Agents, mixtures and exposure circumstances that do not fall into any other group are also placed in this category."Â
Guess you didn't read the whole way through to see the most important part: "which the evidence of carcinogenicity is inadequate in humans".

Hello Brendan, you'll find the below information on page 8 of the above pdf:
Sodium fluoride and sodium fluorosilicate had application against lice (Roberts 1952), with sodium fluorosilicate in combination with phenothiazine and flour applied as a dust (Seddon 1967a). Magnesium fluorosilicate in combination with rotenone and sulphur is still used today to treat sheep lice, itch mites and ked infestations.
Brenden, you just keep drinking that sheep dip/sodium fluoride and hydroflluorosilicic acid that you and your kind keep telling the public is SAFE for human consumption, while it is very EFFECTIVE for killing insects.
By the way, have you seen water do this to cement?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1snpHWoXt4
May be that's why HAZMAT crew use a Material Safety Data Sheets and they are all wearing HAZMAT suits because the hydrofluorosilicic acid, which is used to fluoridate the water supplies in Australia as well, is eating through the cement driveway of the water treatment plant.
Now answer this question, why are there no stand alone published A grade peer reviewed studies of any Fluoride compound, let alone A grade peer reviewed studies carcinogenicity studies?
Why are there only reviews of B & C grade studies and as always, when they do find something wrong/adverse effect from fluoride, Oh, we need more studies to confirm this, which the researchers have said for more than 60+ years.
Are the researchers stalling their real findings?
Is science for sale?
Is it because the authorities don't want the public to find out the real story?
Oh, and btw, what is fluroide doing in chemotherapy?
Fluoride, calcium, vitamin D, and androgenic steroids should not be routinely recommended in myeloma, as they seem to add little to effective chemotherapy and may contribute to morbidity.

You just keep drinking that poison Brenden FUD.

Water fluoridation was pushed on the American public by a small group of powerful industrialists who bought the opinions of the most respected medical and scientific establishments of the time and funded a massive pro-fluoridation media campaign. The Original suggestion to promote fluoride as a dental agent came not from a medical professional, but from a powerful man in the aluminum industry (an industry that produces massive amounts of hexafluoroscilic acid that would have to be disposed of as toxic waste if it were not simply dumped in the water supply all over the US). In addition, the initial promoter of fluoridation in the scientific and medical community was the Mellon Institute, the same organization that was promoting the safety of tobacco use, asbestos, and the addition of lead to gasoline.

I listened to most of the hearing and was impressed by the compelling pro-fluoridation testimony.  Courts have ruled several times that it is the legitimate role of government to provide public health measures.  With this overwhelming evidence for the  safety and benefits of fluoride, the councilors would be negligent not to fluoridate. Being anti-fluoride is like being anti-evolution - both deny legitimate science.

It's always easier to blame the stupid Republicans for environmental pollution, (and deservedly so) when in reality both parties act in unison putting toxins in our water, drill for oil, and bomb more cities overseas. Apparently Barrack and Michelle are so concerned about obesity and what children are eating in America they promised to label all foods with Genetically Modified Organisms -- of course, when he came to office and realized this would destroy Monsanto, he suddenly dropped the whole idea. Americans don't need to know what is being put in their foods, because if they did, Monsanto might go out of business. We can't have that can we...
Historically Portlanders have been opposed to adding fluoride in the water. Various polls I have seen on KGW, KATU, and other online polls vary greatly. Some make Portland split 50/50 on the issue, others have it 61% against fluorid, 39% pro fluoride. Without doubt Portland is split on the issue, but I think a slight majority in Multnomah county are against it. If A republican mayor were adding fluoride to the water there would be even more outraged citizens, but since Mayor Adams claims to be a liberal, people are less likely to be outraged at his decision because of partisan politics.
Do you know the history of Fluoridation? That's something I should be discussed more.
The history of how it began is an important piece of the puzzle to understand it all.
Watch this.
The Fluoride Deception: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReJhMxTJVyo
Â
Fluoridation came from the problem of various industries needing to get rid of their hazardous waste.
The "fluoride" in fluoridation is not some naturally occurring element that's collected, it's actually industrial toxic waste that companies would normally have to pay to dispose of by EPA standards. Â The father of propaganda - Edward Bernays - convinced the public that Fluoride was a dental breakthrough. Bernays wrote the book literally titled "Propaganda" before it had the negative connotation it later developed.
There needs to be some actual honest discussion of the truth on this.
How can the supposed benefit of helping people's teeth permit the city government to forcibly medicate the populace? That just does not make any sense. Is it appropriate for the local city government to forcibly medicate everyone?
98% of Western Europe has banned it or refused to use it. Some countries have figured it out, but not the US though.
Â
Here's something to let you know. Not everybody here drinks gallons of fluoridated tap water straight from the faucet feeling so happy that they're cavities will go away.
Most people I know here in San Diego go to a "water store" for their water. Are there already place in Portland where you can get reverse osmosis filtered water? People go to these "water stores" with 5 gallon bottles to get reverse osmosis filtered tap water. Have you seen what these filters pull out? It's not pretty. I just don't get at all how anyone would want to add anything, much less industrial toxic waste, to the great water that's in the Pacific Northwest.
Will Portland eventually need "water stores" to get your water filtered because the city dumps industrial waste in it? Despite the natural abundance of water in the region?
Â
You make a difference. Ignore the sock puppets. Talk to people. Be active and get in the face of the people that are ramming this through.
That's the power of Occupy and We Are Change. Forcing transparency and dialogue on things that need attention.
Peace to the people, and clean water for all.
Â
I bet this "history" says nothing about the John Birch Society...
Mayor Adams belittling and ignoring a man to his face when asked if he has met with fluoride lobbyists or if his campaign manager Mark Wiener has ties to the fluoride industry: Â http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/25234104/highlight/290877Â Spread this video!  @toeatamangoÂ
Sam Adams deliberately ignores the questions of the citizen asking if Adams and his campaign advisor "Mark Wiener" (Also campaign consultant to Kitzhaber and Charlie Hales) has ties to the fluoride lobby, and if their meetings are on record. Sam Adams flatly ignores the question.
Â
I sent Clyde Lewis of Ground Zero radio my comments about this Fluoride situation. He finally spoke about it on the air. He expressed his anger at the secrecy and lack of choice Adams is giving the Portlanders any say on the matter.
Â
I hope he and James Evan Pilato do a radio show on this, exposing Adams and the pro-fluoride lobby for what they are; Sneaky, sly, commissars.
@Mordecai Rodnipoff III awesome man! If we are persistent and honest we can keep this out of our water! Don't give up!
 @toeatamango That's shameful.
These politicians try to get away with stuff like this since they scheme it up in closed doors.
Â
So look them in the eye and let them know they're not behind closed doors anymore. They aren't our dictators. The public holds them accountable and they are supposed to act for our benefit.
We need some real journalism as to what's really going on here.
I like how http://WeAreChange.org people become the media and ask people hard questions on the truth.
Like for example, "When did you begin negotiations with the fluoride industry? Were any of the meetings documented?"
I'd like to hear a better answer to that, and I'd like to know what was arranged for this to go through.
They just want to help the suffering poor people that will soon have 25% fewer cavities. That's the supposed bottom line promise being made.
So the public will be forced to accept public water that has had industrial toxic waste added with the ruse that it's good for your teeth. The truth is that they're being bribed to dump toxic waste on the public, but even their fake rationale isn't much better.
They claim it's good for teeth, but what justifies the government being able to medicate the entire population by adding a drug to the drinking water. Besides not making sense, that's not legal either. Only doctors can prescribe drugs and then it's after a diagnosis has been made.
And anyway, if the goal was really to help teeth through fluoride then they could provide to the people that asked for it. What right do they have to forcibly medicate us to their non-profession decision.
Â
Someone asked a question of whether the meetings the fluoride industry was documented.
Mayor Sam Adams response was: "You're using up your time"
The side in support started with an hour or more to present their case/sales pitch. Then opposing experts could only have 3 minutes at a time. The attitude of the council and Mayor on the debate was that when a question was asked of him rather than answer he refused and said "You're using up your minute."
So format is fluoride industry shills go first with their propaganda salespitch uninterrupted.
Then expert opponent opinion as well regular informed citizens has to only have 3 minutestalk first uninterrupted, and now you can say whatever but we aren't listening or answering any questions.
Â
Is this normal procedure? I think people should start asking questions to these people on video and demanding answers. It's not legal to force medication on the entire populace.
Â
It has been 98% banned in Western Europe. Look into research that they cited for their reasons why.
Â
...
@Morgan/Wilson2012 You got something to say buddy?
@randomdude  @Morgan/Wilson2012 Whatever your thoughts on fluoridation, I'm just pleased that this was resolved without voter input. People don't know what's good for them, anyhow.
The City Council meeting was political theater to pretend as though the public was given a chance to be heard on this, I'm pretty sure everyone can see that.  But even I was surprised when I saw this video of Mayor Sam Adams BELITTLING AND DIRECTLY IGNORING a concerned man who asked him an honest question at the meeting. Disgraceful. Please watch, it's important that people see just how little respect these City Council people have for the people of Portland:http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/25234104/highlight/290877Â

@Patrick Jayson Reeners Most of these people don't care and are willfully ignorant.
Â
The substance they add to the water for fluoridation is not some kind of naturally occurring substance, nor is it even some kind of pharmaceutical grade additive it is *hazardous industrial toxic waste*.
If they weren't dumping it in the city water they would have to dispose of this as toxic waste. The origins of fluoridation start with the Aluminum, fertilizer and nuclear industries and their problem they had with fluoride toxic waste. Using PR and medical and dental spokesman they convinced the public this was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Just like how at one time Doctors would recommend their favorite brand of cigarettes, or how they claimed asbestos and DDT were not harmful.
There are so many ways fluoridation is wrong: that it's effective for what they say it does, that it's actually toxic waste, that it's harmful and toxic, that the government has no right to forcibly medicate the public and pollute the environment, or that even fluoride is even effective when ingested.Do you eat your toothpaste? It has a label on it saying not to ingest. Then why is it good to add it to water?! It's crazy.
I heard someone in the city council meeting say that it was also effective when ingested. That's complete bull. For the sake of argument let's pretend that's true. If so that makes "fluoride" (not truly fluoride but a mixture of toxic waste compounds) a drug. What business does the government have forcibly medicating the entire populace with no prescription, no dosage control, no choice to opt out. It's insane.
And finally there's the angle on how this has been a closed-door, fast-track move to shove it on the people with no vote, no discussion. It was so obviously stacked in the pro-fluoridating side in the hearing. There's not even a pretense that they're really considering both sides. They made some kind of secret deal already and they're just going through the motions.
I say FIGHT THIS S*$#! Portland has been the outlier of clean water and sensible citizens. And rightfully so Portland has resisted this nonsense three times before, so now they're getting dirty. They have no basis on fact, science, legality or even common sense. There are a surprising number of people not fully aware of all the implications or details, but already people are clearly opposed to this. Once they learn more it will only grow.
Â
@Publius Bravo well said. I don't think I could have said it any better myself. We have to fight this with all the force we can summon. If they are making these deals behind their backs, we need to make occupy Portland look like a lemonade stand.. For goodness sakes, they are screwing our water. THIS is one of the reasons people move out of state to come to Oregon, because of our clean pure water.
@Mordecai Rodnipoff III Right! Portland is a jewel and things like *not* having toxic waste in the water is one of the great things about it.
Â
This is the Occupy is good for! Spread awareness. Learn the facts. Speak out and get involved. We can definitely stop this travesty from happening.
In San Diego after having put a ban on fluoride for many years they somehow brought it back last year. There are legal angles they're taking to fight it, but having not yet voted on and not yet started is a huge advantage over getting rid of it after it's here.
Government recommends lowering fluoride levels in U.S. drinking water
By Saundra Young, CNNJanuary 7, 2011 3:10 p.m. EST
(CNN)Â -- The federal government is recommending changing the amount of fluoride in drinking water for the first time in 50 years.
The Department of Health and Human Services and Environmental Protection Agency are proposing the change because of an increase in fluorosis -- a condition that causes spotting and streaking on children's teeth.
The government is proposing that the recommended amount of fluoride in drinking water be set at 0.7 milligrams per liter of water. The recommended range has been 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter since 1962. The EPA will determine whether the maximum amount of fluoride allowed in water will also be lowered.
Fluoride was first added to water in the United States in the 1940s to help prevent tooth decay in children 8 years and under.
"One of water fluoridation's biggest advantages is that it benefits all residents of a community -- at home, work, school or play," said Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Health Dr. Howard Koh. "And fluoridation's effectiveness in preventing tooth decay is not limited to children, but extends throughout life, resulting in improved oral health."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says dental fluorosis is highest among adolescents between the ages of 12 an 15. One reason for the increase in fluorosis: Americans now have access to fluoride from a variety of sources, including toothpaste, mouth rinses and prescription supplements, the Department of Health and Human Services says
"Dental fluorosis in the United States appears mostly in the very mild form -- as barely visible lacy white markings or spots on the enamel," The department said in a statement Friday. "The severe form of dental fluorosis, with staining and pitting on the tooth surface, is rare in the United States."
The change is being made now, according to an administration official, because the current range is out of date. He said that in the 1960s, when fluoridating water began, air conditioning was much less common. So children in hotter regions drank more water and needed lower levels of fluoride to protect their teeth, while children in colder climates drank less water and needed higher levels.
"Now since air conditioning is so common," the official said, "you don't see those differences in consumption, and that's why they're getting rid of the range and recommending one level."
The American Dental Association says the new recommended levels will still reduce tooth decay but minimize fluorosis. The group says it continues to support fluoridation of community water as a safe and effective way to prevent tooth decay.
"This is a superb example of a government agency fulfilling its mission to protect and enhance the health of the American people," said ADA President Dr. Raymond F. Gist. "We have always looked to the federal health agencies to guide us on this and other public health matters, and we will continue to do so. We applaud the Department of Health and Human Services for reaffirming the safety and efficacy of optimal community water fluoridation, with science on their side."
The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to protect public health and the environment, says it has been pushing governmental officials to reduce fluroide levels for years.
"We've had to wait too long, but the government's official, belated -- and perhaps begrudging -- announcement marks its recognition that fluoride policies have been out of step with the science on the tap-water additive's toxicity to children, and that many American children are at risk from excess fluoride in drinking water and other sources," said Jane Houlihan, senior vice president for research at the Environmental Working Group.
"Since 2005, EWG has been calling on federal agencies to respond to these findings, which come from National Academy of Sciences and many others, documenting that excess fluoride exposure poses dangers that range from discolored teeth to potential hormone disruption and neurotoxicity. HHS has taken an important first step. Now it's up to water utilities to respond and for the EPA to lower its high, legal limit on fluoride in drinking water, which is more than five times higher than the new maximum recommended amount."
The recommendations have been submitted to the Federal Register for a 30-day public comment period. The final version is expected this spring.

If lowering it is good lets just remove it completely?

Hope they've brought their own water. Gotta stay hydrated, ya know!
Instead of fluoridating the water....hand out oral fluoride supplements for kids. They are inexpensive and do just fine.Â
@Saltire Kids are the ones that shouldn't have it, as it causes all sorts of developmental problems.
@molotovmouse Well, they always tout, "It's for the kids", when they want to push it through no matter what. I do know that we gave both our kids fluoride pills when the were young for about 12 months. One has never had a cavity and the other has had three. Both are in their 30's now. Personally, I think it wasn't the fluoride as much as my wife and I pushing them to brush regularly and the use of sealants on their teeth when they were young.
They should just add it to the 40 oz, that will cover their target population, the rest of us go to the dentist regularly and pay for it ourselves!
@Rugrat I agree. But it is far cheaper to medicate 900,000 by directly adding it to the water supply. Putting it in each 40 oz would be logistically, more difficult. The one size fits all method is what Sam and his comrades would prefer. Everyone get's the fluoride treatment. If you filter your water, the fluoride police will knock on your door and administer fluoride through an IV....
lol Ok, I'm exaggerting...but only slightly. I say only slightly because, in 2012 Gary Harrington, of Eagle Point, Oregon was sentenced for 30 days in jail for collecting his own rain water on his 170 acre property.
Â
When the gestapo want to medicate you, and take your water.... Well, don't expect happy customers from here on out. The facts are that big gov, G-men in power want to force their ideas on the populace circumventing democratic and just processes. It gets only worse the higher up you go in the political governmental ladder -- insidius deals made behind closed doors at eccentric secret little enclaves like Bilderberg, Bohemian groves... "so called" conspiracies... They do happen. Sam Adams is the proof that concpiracy theorists are CORRECT... some of the time. Closed door decisions are viewed as conspiracies by many people, whether intended as malicious or not. Adams didn't even respond to the concerned mayors of Gresham, Tualatin, and other towns who voiced concern over his plan. He just pressed a button and sent his PR lobbyists to call them up. Yes Conspiracy. Clyde Lewis of Ground Zero radio had better do a full length show on this.
After 60 years, we would have found proof fluoride was bad! It is a proven method for keeping teeth strong and cavity resistant! It is beneficial for everyone!

Oh crap...

These crazy conspiracy theorists and their unfounded fears about toxins, and chemicals. Food and medicine should be deemed fit for consumption, until proven unsafe. Yes, basically we have to see the negative results on the population before we can pull something from the market. That's the American way. If you don't like it move to Europe!
Science is about testing and replicating. We have to test our products on the general population to see if it works or not.
Â
We don't know why so many people are fat in America, and the kids are getting diabetes, and autism at increasing rates. Perhaps if we pump them full of more chemicals we could find a cause?
Â
Society is our lab experiment. Drink our water! ;)

Â
@Mordecai Rodnipoff III Exactly. We have plenty of variables now and adding another is not a good idea.
@Mordecai Rodnipoff III Last I heard most drugs are available outside the US an Europe long before they are in the US so I think you may have some of your facts backassward but don't let the information get in your way you got a great rant going...
@FreedomRocks  @Mordecai Rodnipoff III Thanks, you're probably right. Scientific experimentation on the populace does have historic roots to Europe, the Nazis among others.
Personally, I'm in my hometown of Mt. Vernon, WA, who fluoridated their water when I was a child, since then the quality of water has gone down and the water taste like nonsense. I'd rather drink out of the fountains downtown Portland or straight out of a river. Here in Mt. Vernon, everyone in my family drinks from water filters or put a large amount of ice in their water to dilute the flavor and make it taste like clean water. I have a feeling that water filters will exponentially find a home in Portland if this happens and I hope for the sake of our integrity as a great city, that is does not. Basic oral hygiene like toothbrushing, plus a proper diet, prevents %100 of tooth decay without forcing millions of perfectly healthy adults to ingest a controversial chemical agains their will for a condition that the vast majority of us do not have. Do not violate my human right to control what I ingest. Do not cut me and the entire public of Portland out of the decision of whether to contaminate a publicly owned treasure. The power tripping bureaucrats who are pushing this through should all be criminally investigated to determine where money is changing hands to make this happen so quickly despite massive public outcry and a consistent historical record of Portlander's voting against fluoridation. Government studies concluding that fluoride is dangerous or ineffective, Including studies from the CDC:Â http://www.nofluoride.com/Government_Studies.cfm Also an interesting, unbiased look at the pros and cons of fluoridation throughout the world:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2001050/
How much water in each household is actually consumed? It seems that in our house, most of the water is used for showers, flushing the toilet, watering the garden, doing laundry and the occasional car wash. Try fluoridating something that is actually made to be consumed - there'll be real blowback!
Why do we continue to make policy to the lowest common denominator? Why is it too much to expect that people will take care of their own, and their children's, dental hygiene?
@mikew Its the liberal way they want to be mommy to everyone and everything...

Once again, our great city leadership is out of control..

Does anyone really believe adding fluoride will help lower income folks.? Will they really drink enough water to make that much difference.? Wouldn't it be better if they just brushed and flossed their teeth.?
@doejane Fluoride in the soda pop now that will fix the teeth of the low income! Water is just for showering and the toilet for most I bet.
@doejane EXACTLY PEOPLE DONT TEACH THEIR KIDS HOW AND WHEN TO BRUSH LIKE AFTER EVERY SODA, MEAL, SNAK
